me when I first started this channel I'm not gonna put up anything involving tapana me and etymology it's too complicated for me to explain and I'm not very good at all this stuff yet there is no way I'm doing something that I could mess up so easily there is nothing more terrifying and verbose than an etymologist flame war before any information or history there are a few things to discuss remember your objective in making world names some things that happen in real life need to be swept aside for the sake of good world building not all names need a developed history and names should be pronounceable memorable and invoking of whatever connotation you want the place to have if you want people to talk about your places and not give them stupid nicknames make them easily understandable to your target demographic but if you're going for convoluted and uber realistic world names hey have at it I'm going to start this off with history in how place names actually come into being and then go over my process for building them now with that out of the way place names are unsurprisingly based on the language of the people who make them so when you're building a world the places will be named in your language or in conlangs and unless you're working on a real world thing that's cool too also my native language is English and Asian pop pop pop - say be honest a box at the bossy blue polka mark al-anam doesn't dois place names that originate naturally will usually be based on descriptions of the area mostly it'll be of a specific feature a general description of the land or a specific person in the vast majority of cases the place name will change over time especially if it is large old and/or important I need to assault somebody right here Game of Thrones some of the stuff in here is actually really good and I really like it but some of them absolutely suck and they break every single goddamn rule okay okay I love Game of Thrones and I love George are mine love you baby so we're gonna start with natural names these will be the places that are named by the people who live there and are widely accepted as these names by everyone else there every name starts in the language of the people speak you wouldn't expect a Celtic Britain to name their town field every place name is gonna start as a natural feature a description of that places function a person or character's name an existing name additional modifiers or any combination of these you can mix and match these around any way you like I don't care but you should combine at least two of these new plus Castle equals new castle in bottle stone you want to guess that Boston is Sean which is the name of a river plus...
