[Music] hey it's jason from the placer county museums we are at the gold rush museum today we're going to talk about backlit museum signs on the cheap i've got solutions for any budget that you're going to love built with stuff you can get from your local hardware store now the material we're going to use to make all these backlight signs work is called backlight film all right quick primer on backlight film this stuff is plastic with an image printed on it it's really nice quality and if you put it up with light behind it it really pops that's what makes those signs so great it's the kind of thing you see on bus sheds where they have big advertisements for movies it's not that expensive you can buy it by the square foot and they will print whatever you want on it so come on this way i'm going to show you the super cheap uh can do every within everybody's skill set version of how this works and it's in our ghost town exhibit over here every hole in the wall and the door has inside it a history of a local ghost town that you can go through one at a time and check out these aren't the best part though the best part's how it's put together on the back side so come on in okay so all of the back side of this is foam core with hot glue and christmas lights i mean it doesn't get much easier than that right i did this in a hurry and it's been running for three years and i haven't had to do anything to it so not bad for a five dollar solution okay and now let's go check out another cheap version i think you're gonna like it okay now i'm gonna show you how to do it on an already built exhibit so this is basically the price of the film itself come check this out here's what backlight film looks like when you glue it to the inside of existing plexiglass using spray glue and the secret weapon a brayer all right so we're going to be using an aerosol can uh of spray glue you want to do that in a well ventilated area i'm going to turn on the hood here and we'll get at it and now i have to talk loud okay here we go you want to put a layer of spray nice and even over the top of your picture and then lay it face down against the glass boop and then now we've got it on there but it's bubbly and weird i don't know if you can see that on the video so we hit it with the brayer that's going to make it adhere really well it's going to push out all the air pockets and that will have a very a much nicer surface i could even use a little more and now this is what would go into your light box and it comes out great i mean that pops and the light behind it that was originally lighting the case just lights up the label fantastic so now we're gonna go back upstairs and check out the big ones i think you're gonna like these check it out all right these are custom built wooden 45 degree angle boxes that i think make a really pleasing sign the two kinds of lights i use the leds i go between puck lights uh and this is a great set of puck lights because it's got an on off switch which means it's dumb uh i want all my technology to be dumb so that when someone flips a light switch it just comes on it doesn't need any extra instructions any kind of super smart lights pass don't do it these are tough because it's hard to get the amount of light even inside a box sometimes you have to make it or build it so it's on top of a box shining in that way you'll get a more even light and then sometimes you have to put stuff inside it to reflect it around it can get pretty complicated with these you want to keep it simple it's a bit more expensive but these led strip lights are great they come with an adhesive that actually holds pretty well i just paint the inside of the box white and i run these lights all the way around it you can cut them at any junction like this to make them any length and now i'll show you the giant version of this this is the biggest one i ever made this is plexiglass adhered to backlight film with a thin layer of plexiglass over the top to protect it all screwed together same led lights you buy from the hardware store power this but thanks so much for joining us on our journey through backlight sign technology that we figured out at the placer county museums this is the gold rush museum come on drop by check it out it's actually one of my favorite museums which is what i say about all the museums i work on but uh yeah come on down and see us [Music] later you
