[Music] hi I'm Sonia Thompson and I'm here with Corey shear the coal managing director of girls in tech so thank you for joining me tell us about girls in tech what is what is it about and what is your guys overall vision or mission so girls in tech is really about changing the face of technology and creating more equity for all people not just women even not just girls but really how can we make sure that the people that are building the products and all of us around the country are using are really reflective of the people that are using them right girls and tech is here to support that mission and finding the gaps that are missing so whether it's hard skill education whether it's finding your community whether it's getting capital or equity to actually start your companies girls and tech has found ways to kind of plug into those gaps that we found missing in the industry today so on the education front what skills do you think that women will need to learn in order to compete in the world tomorrow yeah I mean I think we talked a lot about hard skills and I think I think a lot of organizations have done a really great job of like these soft skills or what I would call soft skills and I think those are tremendously important just being able to communicate having emotional intelligence being able to lead and also follow are things that I think we don't learn in school and aren't taught but I think there's also this gap that we recognized and identified that we are have built out a lot of curricula around hard skills those being like analytics I think a lot of times folks don't realize you can't just design something you can't just build something and not understand the impact that it's going to have on the business and so really being able to not only interpret data but also being able to pull data is going to be a skill that I think everyone's going to need to have in the future and also being able to code to some extent even at the company that I work at during my day job everyone is empowered to go into github make a pull request and make changes to the site where they see fit so I think you're really gonna see a future where everyone's included in not only the conversations but in the code that we're building every day do you know how is that how was the vision how was the mission changed over that time is 13 years and strong right you know I wish I could say it's changed a lot but I think the industry still hasn't caught up and so I think you know the organization is still doing the work and I think the thing that's changed is that we have more friends we have more people on our side we have more chapters but I think the work that we're doing is still the same and still really finding new and innovative ways to meet our needs of our community [Music]
