okay so in this video we're going to start talking about formulas from word examples and in an exam question it will give you a scenario and from that you have to calculate a formula so let's say for instance in this particular word problem that we're going to use we're going to look at the cost of hiring a color so the cost of hiring the car of hiring the car equals 100 pounds plus 50 pounds for each day's hire so it's a hundred pounds plus 50 pounds per day and what the Willys do is to work out a formula for the cost the overall cost of hiring a car for a holiday okay so this is a fixed amount so it doesn't matter really whether you gonna hire the car for one day are you gonna hire it for 14 days you're still gonna pay the hundred pounds so it's a fixed value so in terms of our formula the cost if you're light we'll call it C which is the total cost equals a hundred plus and then we have 50 pounds per day so it doesn't matter how many days you have the car for you have to pay 50 pounds for every single day that you have the car so I'm going to use the single d for days and I'm going to say that for every day we have to pay 50 pounds so it's going to be d times 50 all right now I'm going to tidy this up a little bit just because it's better from algebra and also from the presentation the formula to make sure that you maximize your marks to make it look just a little bit more mathematical so I've got a hundred plus D times fifty well the way that we write D times fifty would be fifty D so I can try I could write it as a hundred plus fifty D or it doesn't really make any difference it's just a matter of convention I can also write it as C equals fifty D plus 100 and what that means is is that if I have the car for one day it's going to be 50 times 1 which is 50 plus 100 so that's going to be a hundred and fifty pounds if I have the car for five days it would be 50 times five which is 250 plus a hundred which is 350 so it's going to be a very expensive holiday I think at 350 pounds for coming hyah okay so that's how to take it from a word problem and if you look at the bottom of the video I've written the word problem out for you and if you want to subscribe to the channel you'll be updated when we post new videos and also visit Matt's rap co uk and that'll give you quite a lot of information about solving real maths problems
