ever amen a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to all the people saying a prophet like me will the lord your god raise up for you from among your own kin to him you shall listen this is exactly what you requested of the lord your god at horeb on the day of the assembly when you said let's not again hear the voice of the lord our god nor see that great fire anymore lest we die and the lord said to me that was well said i will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin and put my words into his mouth he shall tell them all that i command him whoever will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name i myself will make him answer for it but if a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that i have not commanded him to speak or speaks in the name of other gods he shall die the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] if today you hear his voice [Music] you hear his voice [Music] come let us sing joyfully to the lord let us acclaim the rock of our first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters i should like you to be free of anxieties an unmarried man is anxious about the things of the lord how he may please the lord but a married man is anxious about things of the world how he may please his wife and he is divided an unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about things of the lord so that she may be holy in both body and spirit a married woman on the other hand is anxious about things of the world how she may please her husband i am telling you this for your own benefit not to impose a restraint upon you but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the lord without distraction the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] says [Music] [Music] [Applause] hallelujah [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to mark then they came to capernaum and on the sabbath jesus entered the synagogue and taught the people were astonished at his teaching for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes in their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit he cried out what have you to do with us jesus of nazareth have you come to destroy us i know who you are the holy one of god jesus rebuked him and said quiet come out of him the unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him all were amazed and asked one another what is this a new teaching with authority he commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him his fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of galilee the gospel of the lord [Music] [Music] [Music] synagogue is so boring i just don't understand why we have to go every saturday the best part is definitely the donuts we get afterwards if i know anything about human nature i'm sure there were many jews in capernaum who felt this way about their sabbath religious services it's just a hunch but i gotta think we haven't really changed that much rabbis were probably trying to make their instructions cool and relevant and the kids at capernaum middle school probably rolled their eyes as they dressed up real nice and went with their parents to listen to the reading of the torah i can't help but think that the men and women of first century galilee were probably fairly similar to you and me who can easily get consumed in the rhythm of life and the monotony of our religious duties following the law daily prayer weekly community gatherings we often wish for something amazing something astonishing right well be careful what you wish for dear people of capernaum it was of course a sabbath much like any other and yet on that particular day something happened that would amaze and astonish those god-fearing men and women i can guarantee you that they did not leave the synagogue that day thinking about how boring it was they didn't go home and instantly forget what they had just seen and heard no rather st mark tells us that they were amazed by jesus's teaching and later on that they were astonished at what they saw him do so astonished in fact that they were all talking about it amongst themselves these words that mark uses have really strong meanings the first verb literally means to strike deeply they were struck deeply at his teaching almost as if to say they were smitten the second verb comes from the root that means to stun or to render immovable they were so astonished that they couldn't move now i know that i'm basically describing the state of holy name after father colin gives a homily right that's so funny sorry not i don't know i don't like to do that but hopefully something of that sort maybe but this amazement should not be lost on us my friends rather it should lead us to ponder deeply our own participation in this liturgy our own religious gathering have i ever been amazed at what takes place here have i ever been astonished by the mystery of jesus's work so astonished in fact that i leave my pew with a sense of being stunned in wonder i know this may sound dramatic and by my own words i too stand convicted of letting these mysteries often pass me by but perhaps our loving savior wants to amaze and astonish us today perhaps he longs to leave us with that same sense of wonder with which he filled the hearts of those unsuspecting citizens of capernaum it would seem to be in his nature to do so but how might jesus fill us with this wonder i think this answer might surprise us the initial amazement this synagogue happens before jesus has really done anything remember all he's got so far is a few disciples that he grabbed from the local marina his fame is going to start spreading but right now he's just a dude who shows up at the synagogue and starts teaching and actually that's what amazes them his teaching st mark tells us that they were deeply struck at his teaching it's not a miracle it's not a magic trick it's a teaching interestingly enough mark doesn't actually tell us what this teaching consists of and the evangelist can be kind of sneaky that way there are actually many moments in the gospels where this happens we know that jesus is saying and doing something but we don't get the transcript well whatever it was jesus's teaching strikes the people of capernaum deeply they're amazed at it so here's the question for you and me have i ever been amazed at jesus's teaching have i ever ever been deeply struck by jesus's teaching have i ever walked out of this church or even gotten up from from a moment of prayer or study or conversation with a friend and been amazed at jesus's teaching he must be one day and good teacher and he must have something really dang good to say now you might respond well father colin that's all very nice but jesus also makes a scene he performs an exorcism for crying out loud true enough that second verb to be smitten shows up after jesus has a dialogue with a demon and casts it out easily that's pretty impressive stuff but what does mark say happens next what is this they say a new teaching with authority he commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him there's that word again teaching what amazes these folks is not simply that jesus has some cool powers it's that his power proves his teaching legit jesus is not merely a good rhetorician because he's got the authority he's got the power to actually back it up the crowds are amazed to see a man cured of his unclean spirit but even more than that they're amazed to know that his teaching is the real deal not a boring day at the synagogue by any stretch of the imagination so what does jesus teach us we might know a few things off the top of our heads the golden real golden rule love your enemies forgive people etc but even beyond these memorable lessons jesus teaching actually encapsulates the fullness of who god is and consequently the fullness of who we are jesus doesn't just teach us what to do he teaches us who to be he doesn't just teach us how to live a good life he teaches us how to share eternal life with him my friends this is far more than an emotional speech a stirring feel-good sermon we're told that the reaction of the crowds is not excitement or applause but amazement and astonishment this is the reaction of those who've heard something new something challenging it's the reaction of those who may now have to analyze their own lives and examine whether they're ready to accept these words this person this teaching it's the reaction of those who have believed many lies about themselves and are now hearing the truth for the first time my friends are you amazed even astonished at his teaching i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen formed by god's holy word let us bring our prayers our needs our petitions our intercessions before our loving father for the church that the authoritarian teachings of jesus will guide and challenge us as we seek to be more authentic disciples we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the grace to be grounded in god that each of us whether celibate single married or widowed may seek god first in our lives and love others with the love with which god first loves us we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who exercise authority that they may use their authority as jesus did to free people to heal the sick and to build up the community we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for students faculty and staff of catholic schools that the spirit will guide them in growing in faith offering outstanding education and serving in love we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who have mental or emotional illness that god's love will strengthen heal and sustain them and help us to accompany them along life's journey we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer now together let us offer the prayer for our archdiocese and synod calling the holy spirit down upon our local church as we say come holy spirit make our ears to hear make our eyes to see make our mouths to speak make our hearts to seek make our hands to reach out and touch the world with your love amen mary mother of the church pray for us please be seated now as we prepare the gifts for the altar i will guide you and show you [Music] i will give you life bring your deepest there you will find me waiting for you do not be afraid [Music] [Music] believe in me and follow i will give you life let me lift you from your darkest place rise with the eyes take my face there you will find me waiting for you do not be afraid i will guide you and show you unbind you release you and call you from the dark believe i will give you [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father o lord we bring to your altar these offerings of our service be pleased to receive them we pray and transform them into the sacrament of our redemption through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for through his paschal mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for your own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] glory [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice in giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] [Applause] [Music] therefore lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint john bosco and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray oh lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and bernard our bishop andrew his auxiliary the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion oh merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord to whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours [Music] forever [Music] [Music] amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not in our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the peace behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be
