Create mark time
hey guys mr. Loper here again today we're going to be talking a little bit about marking time for drum line members it is a little bit different from the other way to deployers that are gonna be on the field mostly because we've got something hanging on our body and the way that we carry ourselves is just a little bit different from the wind players like your woodwinds and brass ok so let's get started here is what the feet are going to look like from an overhead view during marking time so if I were to begin marking time I would move my knees just barely and my feet are coming off the ground just the slightest amount ok you are you're gonna want to think moving my feet enough to slide a piece of cardboard underneath and you'll notice that my feet are not perfectly straight together like this they're not apart my heels are together and my feet are at about a 45 degree angle and that is going to be essentially the basics of what our feet should look like during marking time ok and here are my feet from a little bit different angle hopefully you can see my legs a little bit but marking time essentially I'm picking up those feet just enough to slide that piece of cardboard underneath I'm not bringing my knees too far forward if I do bring my knees too far forward they're gonna hit the drum and that is not what you want so and I'm really driving my feet down into the ground I'm not kind of I'm well I'm not like wobbling back and forth I guess it's not a soft step it's a very firm step and you need to be able to feel the pulse of the tempo or the pulse of the music through your body starting with the feet that is kind of the foundation of where we get our time in marching band ok so we've got our shoulders back our chest out or head up and we've got our arms comfortable down at our sides so when we are marking time we don't want our legs moving up a lot we want very little movement some marching bands do that some college marching bands you'll see Ohio State do that but we do not do that a friend so I'm going to start the metronome and we're going to get started with that so normally you're in here you'll hear a tap off from the drum captain that's gonna be about eight cats long and for the first four cats you don't move for the second eight count you do like this last thing we want to talk about is what floyd steps one okay so you may have noticed by this point in the video but I am always starting with my left foot okay this might be flipped for you guys but my left foot is always going to be the foot that starts okay so that left foot is going to be assigned to beat one and three a right foots gonna get two and four and if we're marching in like an odd meter like maybe three four or five four those feet are gonna switch every time which foot gets like the downbeat the beat one but always in marching band we're gonna end up starting back on the left foot for any sort of big phrases so practice everything off of your left foot your left foot is going to be the driving force all of the music okay so let's I'm gonna play through triplet roles right now and you'll be able to see how my feet are lining up with all that in the music okay so here is triplet roles from the exercise packet with marking time and then I'm gonna stop marking time on that very downbeat even though my hands don't come down a little bit later my feet stop on that last note okay that is your marking time tutorial for drum line thanks for watching
