welcome to the AP drawing portfolio I'm Colleen Harrigan and I teach at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack New York in addition to teaching AP I'm a consultant question leader at the reading and a former development committee meeting member thank you for joining me today I'm here to discuss the principles of design and mark-making in the drawing portfolio do you have questions about the principles of design and mark making the principles of design describe fundamental concepts about the practice of creating visual art mark making is a drawing skill this video lesson will explain what the principles mean and how they are activated through mark making in works of art by the end of this lesson you should be able to understand the concepts of mark making and their relationships to the principles of design okay so now we're going to do a warm-up and for this warm-up you're going to need a piece of paper and something to write with so I'll give you a second to get that and we're going to make some marks together I'm going to draw along with you so the first thing I want you to do and they don't have to be big these can be small drawings okay or they can be as whatever size you want so the first thing I'd like you to do is to write your name okay and you can write it any way you want you can write it in scripts you can write it in print however you normally write your name and by doing that you've made a mark using line okay so that's the first one the second one I'd like you to do is I'd like you to close your eyes and move your hand back on your drawing tool towards the middle close your eyes and write your name however you'd like okay that's another type of mark for the third hold your tool all the way at the end as far away from the point as possible close your eyes and write your name this one might take a little bit longer than the first and now for the fourth I want you to just write your initials using only dots and you might find that you have to go back and forth and sometimes the dots are bigger and sometimes they're smaller so you can't control it maybe as much as when you're using a line it also makes an interesting sound okay and then for the fifth drawing and this is going to be our last one in the warm-up I want you to change hands I want you to draw with your non-dominant hand so for me that's my left hand and I'm gonna close my eyes and write my name oh my goodness okay so now let's take a quick look at the various types of marks we've made together how you draw as an extension of yourself what you're thinking what you're seeing your sense is how your body moves the marks that you make become the language of drawing okay and I want you to think about that as we go through this presentation and look at the variety of marks that artists can make okay so let's go back and continue on and these are the things that we just did okay what you need to know this is important the AP drawing portfolio exam this portfolio is designed for work that focuses on the use of mark making line surface space light and shade and Composition students should consider marks that can be used to make drawings the arrangement of marks the materials and processes used to make marks and the relationships of marks and ideas students can work with any materials processes and ideas drawing which could be analog and digital painting printmaking and mixed media work are among the possibilities for submission still images from videos or film are accepted composite images may be submitted in the course in exam description we're focusing today on core skill - which is making through practice experimentation and revision and 2d states that students will make works of art and design that demonstrate 2d 3d or drawing skills and then core skill 3 which is communication and reflection we'll be focusing on 3e which is just to describe how works of art and design demonstrate 2d 3d or drawing skills so you can see that we're really focusing on the skills today so the 2d skills and thence this is quite a long list so I'm going to read through them once and we're going to be thinking about them and talking about them throughout the presentation the use of two dimensional elements and principles point line shape plane layer form space texture color value opacity transparency time unity variety rhythm movement proportion scale balance emphasis contrast repetition figure ground relationship connection juxtaposition and hierarchy wow that's quite a comprehensive list and maybe you've heard all of these before and maybe some of these words are new to you but we're going to talk about how the 2d skills are used to make drawings and the marks or the elements that are activated through the principles the drawing skills that are the use of mark making line surface space light and shade and composition so the skills are two separate lists but they coexist and we'll see how that looks visually later on in the lesson big idea three we'll also be considering how works of art and design demonstrate 2d 3d or drawing skills the only aspects of the rubrics or scoring processes that vary by portfolio type are the technical skills that are assessed when choosing between the 2d or drawing portfolio you should consider how you would like your skills assessed and sometimes it's very difficult because that your skills are at the same level so for the sustained investigation rubric online D this addresses how the skills are assessed and in the selected works rubric online a that addresses how the skills are assessed okay so let's do some practice to get there now what is mark making how do you define it it's been around since prehistoric times Mark's will have meaning and form a visual image we've tried to make a few marks but is that all a drawing is just a bunch of marks how do marks become a work of art there are myriad of ways to make a mark and the variety of materials used to make marks is endless a initially it's a relationship between a material and a surface okay now think back to the that very long list that I recited just a few minutes ago and look at this image all right so we're thinking about marks take a moment and describe these marks to yourself using words from the skill list and I'll give you some examples of what I'm thinking about I see lines I see color I see space I see texture okay now let's look at this image in context in a larger context oh well it's actually part of a van Gogh painting that's from the Met collection so we see the relationship of the individual marks to the entire painting and from those lines colors spaces and textures we can derive unity variety movement and repetition here's another example of mark making using the elements and principles it's a it's a self-portrait as well by attributed to Rembrandt and here you probably see right away line shape space and texture again through emphasis movement repetition and variety so essentially there's a visual dialogue between the skills and it changes with each work so there's not one recipe and or formula that's used to combine mark-making and the principles and elements to create a work there are many ways to do it we see two images by John Singer Sargent on the left is a sketch and on the right is an oil painting it's the same subject this is madam X but you can see the variety in which this artist approaches the concepts of mark making in the sketch he has very loose directional lines versus the very smooth finish and the oil painting on the right so this highlights his versatility using different materials and you probably experienced that yourself when you're working and don't forget handwriting at the start of this lesson we practice handwriting using the language of line this these are the works of sites wombly where he layers handwriting and color to create abstract forms emphasizing rhythm and movement in his work you may be familiar with the artist Julie Mira - she's a contemporary artist and she currently has a show at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and she's known for her very large-scale multi-layered paintings of abstracted landscapes and what you'll see in the photograph in the lower right is that her marks are being transferred through the process of printmaking ingred column also a contemporary artist is show shows her work in a very very different way so you don't always have to make the mark the marks can find you through observation and discovery she in her series of tracings at the Indianapolis Speedway she pulled marks off the surface of the ground and traced them using line shape color layers rhythm movement and connection not all marks are the same they can be loose or controlled sloppy or neat they can be created from many different materials and actions artists make marks by using gestures their senses and experiences to express themselves in their environments mark Bradford is another contemporary artist he creates his own materials out of paper and he he says himself that he paints with paper and he makes these very unique surfaces using a process of destruction and reconstruction so take a moment and think about some of the materials and objects that you might have available to make marks create a list right now of three things you might experiment with soon and you can use that paper that you drew on at the start of this lesson to make that list some of the things I'm thinking about are right here on the desk in front of me for example a paper clip the bottom of my cup and a piece of string here are some other ideas about mark making drawing with glue this student takes a tube of glue and squeezes it out about two feet off the surface of a piece of colored construction paper and creates a very loose and fluid line that when it's draw when it dries they can go back into with other materials and it acts as a resist so this work on the right features the glue drawing as the base and then chalk pastel on top collage is another way to make marks this student used printed collage charcoal pen and ink and whiteout so think about actually cutting up photographs or newspapers or magazines or any printed material attaching it to a surface and continuing on with your mark making here's something else to think about this student used different washes of blue jeans and created a collage with fabric here's some other experiences with mark-making that you might find interesting the student is drawing simultaneously with both hands this student is using colored masking tape as her material to draw with the student is using forks dipped in ink this student has found many materials and decided to use a tennis ball and the action of that to roll a mark this student has attached colored pencils as an extension of his fingers and continued drawing and this student decided to make a painting without a paintbrush and put some paint on the edges of his hair and painted that way you Computers can also make marks you can design a set of instructions for a computer to carry out and that's a very interesting type of drawing and here's an example you can also create your own drawing machines this student took discarded desk accessories from the library and created a drawing machine that spun and she attached various drawing tools to and created this large work that you see below sometimes the marks become the space as in the performance drawing by kusama so the space starts out very stark with no color at all and the artist provides a stack of materials for which the participants can select what they want to use and where they want to put it so this participatory drawing begins and then more things are added until finally the space is transformed so let's review the skills again that we talked about these are the 2d skills and these are the drawing skills and remember they coexist so now we're going to look at some examples of student drawings and we'll see what their relationship is to those skills we will highlight one relationship in each student work although there are likely multiple aspects right for example in this drawing we see the student use mark making to show texture with rhythm in this example the student use mark making to emphasize value and contrast in this painting the student use color as emphasis in this work the student use shape to show variety and those circular shapes are actually paint chips samples from the Home Depot that the student cut up into that those forms in this work the student used line to demonstrate movement in this drawing the student used space to show repetition the repet of the rectangular forms which overlap and move your eye backwards through the composition in this example the student used mark-making to show value with rhythm these acts these aspects could eventually be incorporated into your written evidence so think about your skills and how they relate to your mark making even though the previous example is highlighted just a singular aspect in reality your drawings could and likely will address multiple skills at once so here's an example of a student work so think about the skills that the student used and now I'm going to show you the final version of the student work you and you can see the multitude of skills that the student incorporates in their work okay so we've thought about the skills and the mark-making we experimented with marks we described the AP drawing portfolio exam we reviewed the core skills for AP art and design we looked at the work of various artists who use mark making in their studio practice we define mark making and discuss the relationship with the principles of design we thought about ways to make new types of marks and we looked at student artwork whose marks address various principles of design we know that not all students have access to the Internet or a device we're working on solutions to help students get what they need to show their best work if you need mobile tools or connectivity or know someone who does you can reach us at us directly to let us know please reach out at CB org slash tech thank you so much for watching today and I wish you luck with your portfolio
