So now that you have finally decided that you want to adopt a baby and grow your family what do you do now? what is the process like? well in this video I'm gonna go through step by step and explain to you all the process is from start to finish. For the best adoption advice subscribe to my channel and hit that Bell button to be notified when I post a new video every Wednesday. Hi, I'm Lucrece and I am an adoption attorney and I have helped a lot of families complete their adoptions whether its private adoptions, stepparent adoption, international adoption, you name it. Now it's your turn! so now that you've decided that you want to grow your family through adoption by adopting a newborn baby the very first step that you need to take is to complete your home study. The home study basically approves you as a family who's basically fit to adopt. So you can get your home study two different ways so if you choose to go through an agency for your adoption that agency will complete they will help you complete the home study so they'll have a home study worker a caseworker comes to your house and they'll do all the things they need to do to get the report that they need. If you are deciding that you do not want to go through an agency for your adoption but you want to hire an attorney to help you through the process there are agencies out there that are stand-alone home study agencies and all they do is they do home studies so they're not affiliated with anyone but they are licensed to only complete home studies for adoptions so you can also contact an agency like that if you're choosing to do you know your your adoption through an attorney and they can complete your home study as well. So a home study is basically an investigation that's done on your family and the point is to help you so that you can be approved as an adoptive family so they do everything you know from background checks to checking on when you went to high school who your parents are what you did growing up what your hobbies are how much you make a year it's a very very extensive investigation and they just want to make sure that you have the resources that you need to adopt a child and that you are prepared for an adoption and some agencies even require you to take classes to make sure that you understand what can happen when you go through an adoption for example like if you're gonna do an interracial adoption it really important that you understand the dynamics that go with that so that's kind of what the home study really is for is to its just approve you to be an adoptive family. After your home study is done the second step is for you to get matched with a biological mom who is looking into adoption for her soon-to-be born baby. So the matching basically works like this so the biological mom looks at your profile and she says "I really like this family I think that this this is the family that I want my baby to live with" and once she picks you you'll get notified that you've been picked and then you know then the process starts that way that's basically what it means to be matched. Where are you in this adoption process? comment below and let me know, So after you have been matched with a biological mom the third step that you need to take is to wait for the delivery we have to wait for the mom to give birth to the baby. Now states differ on how long after the baby is born and that the mom has to wait before she agrees to the adoption in Nebraska here where I practice for example once the the biological mom gives birth to the child she has to wait 48 full hours before she signs away her rights to that baby and agrees to the adoption I mean other states like Wyoming for example once the baby is born the mom can actually sign away her rights right away and in other states even though the mom signs over her rights the state actually permits her to change her mind within a certain amount of time so you have to make sure that you understand the laws of the state where the baby is going to be born and what rights that mom has when it comes to relinquishing her parental rights to that baby and to agree to the adoption. Now this is true in every single state the mom once she has she gives birth to her baby she has the right to not go through with the adoption anymore so she can decide to just to change her mind at the last minute and to keep her baby which is a good thing right we want babies to stay with their moms it's a bad thing for the adoptive family but it's a good thing for a mom to keep her baby there's pros and cons to all this stuff but it's really important that you understand that that once if the mom does not sign away her rights, then the adoption can't go through. Now if everything goes smoothly and the biological parents sign away their rights and all the papers are signed and filed properly then the the final step the fourth and final step is for you to finalize your adoption in court and make it official. In some states Florida for example if you're adopting a baby from Florida once you get there and the mom signs away her rights and you take the baby with you you can actually finalize the adoption right there before you even come back to your home state. Nebraska is different if you adopt a baby from out of the state and you come back to Nebraska you have to wait the full six months before you can finalize that adoption here in Nebraska and basically you just need to hire an attorney to help you do all the paperwork and when you finalize the adoption that means that you can change the name of the baby you can put your names on the birth certificate and you know everything kinda gets done where the baby is now officially yours even though the mom has signed over her rights and the dad has signed away their rights the adoption is not completed until you actually finalize it in court so that's your last step. Now you know what the process of adopting a newborn baby is like from start to finish but do you know how to pick the right attorney for you if you're choosing to go with an independent adoption and not go through an agency you need an attorney who's experienced and who knows what they're doing I have written a cheat sheet to help you figure out how to pick the right attorney so that you don't waste your money you can click the link below to get a hold of that cheat sheet now if you like this video click that like button be sure to subscribe and share with your friends thanks for watching bye
