hi i'm richard byrne in this video i want to give you a little overview of a neat tool from the usgs for creating maps let's go ahead and take a look at it it's called the national map and you'll find it on the usgs website and we're going to use the national map viewer and this is what it looks like and there's a lot of things you can potentially do with the national map viewer and i have a link to it in the description down below so let's first of all take a look at the base map options this is the default one here but you can see we can also do a national geographic one usgs hydro usgs national map which again is the default you can do a light gray canvas or any of these other ones that you want to use i'm going to leave it at light gray canvas for right now we'll close that out now we'll see we also have here a layer list and this is layers of data that you can add to the map but we also have this option here for adding data and let's just scroll through here and we're going to say we want things within the map so we're going to leave that toggled on and we can see things like ecosystems earthquake faults let's add earthquake faults and add that to the map and now it appears here on our map and we can see that in a little more detail or zoom out but what's really neat here is you can click on the details button and that will take you to more information about that layer of information where you can again open it in the map viewer if you want to or just go right back over here now you'll notice there's some other things you have access to here you can see that that data is still loading on the map there it's now refreshed with some more information it takes a lot of load but you can see here we have some other options like measuring if we want to measure on the map we can do that we can also go over here and draw on our map and let's say we want to just do a quick line across the map here let's go ahead and draw that line right there if we don't like it let's just undo it and finally when we have everything on the map that we want to have we can just hit that print button and we can print out the map from the national map viewer i can hit that print button let's print that out so that's the national map it's a great little tool from the usgs could be great for a social studies lesson or perhaps for a science lesson or both as always for more things like this please check out freetech4teachers.com or...
