[Music] atari is like the original video game company in the early 1980s they were the biggest we have to give them credit because they help form and shape the video game industry as we know it i have no doubt that if things had gone a little bit differently they could have been one of the biggest electronics and technology companies today you may even be watching this video on something made by them it's kind of a sad story because today they're just a very diluted brand it's not a straightforward story either there are a lot of ups and downs i guess more downs than ups so i want to talk about the legendary company that is atari how they grew so large and where things went wrong nolan bushnell is an impressive person and what i think we can call a very early gamer in the late 1960s while attending college for engineering at the university of utah he would work part-time at an amusement park where he became the manager of the games department they weren't technically video games they were electro-mechanical games things like pinball but he did play computer games as well through school's computer lab he was able to access a very early computer game called space war well after graduating he worked as an electrical engineer at a company in san francisco called ampex where he first met his co-worker ted dabney the two of them got together to create this revolutionary new video game called computer space now the game itself wasn't anything too special it was actually heavily based on that existing game space war that he had played in college but it was significant in that it's been credited as the first ever commercially sold arcade game i mean it was ahead of its time they tried to take advantage of that too by designing the cabinet to have this crazy futuristic look on the upside it was so futuristic looking that it was chosen to be featured a couple years later in the sci-fi movie soylent green that took place in the year 2022 they may have underestimated the future of video games but on the downside it looked intimidating the general public of 1971 was not computer savvy nor had they seen anything like this before it was seen as complicated and confusing so it didn't get the best response in the end something like 1500 of them were produced which you could consider a small success but nothing like the national craze that atari would become the following year the two of them moved on from that project and started atari they got the name of it from this old chinese game that bushnell was a fan of playing it had these black and white stones and it was simply called a go to my understanding atari is the term used in the game when one of the stones is about to be captured i...
