hello everybody welcome we are here open officially the 35th annual political economy of the world system conference under the general organizing theme national borders in the 21st century I want to welcome everyone that's travelled far and wide here to Stony Brook University and start my remarks by asking a simple question so why a conference on national borders over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries the social science is developed under the premise often specified explicitly but with equal effect implicitly that societies are national societies they are delineated by national boundaries which then the delineating I'm a tional boundaries which then form independent and annulled analytically distinct units called nation-states yet ongoing transformations in the waste national boundaries both shape and are shaped by economic political and cultural challenges in the 21st century challenge 21st century perspectives that continue to see nationally bounded space as the only arena for political activity and social change over the course of the next three days this conference will consider new ways of thinking about national borders the analytical and empirical challenges as well as the normative and political debates but I also want to push the conference participants even further to consider our work from a forward-thinking and engaged perspective thinking about our analysis in a way that our keynote speaker tonight would ask us to that is to the extent that we are in the midst of world historical transitions evolving to a large degree of fundamental rethinking of the place purpose and future relevance of national borders and if civil society social movements and the identities and flows of people that we're going to be talking about this conference our part and parcel of these transitions then what are the historical alternatives available to those seeking fundamental change what should constitute the strategies for global transformation suggested by the analytical descriptions represent over the next few days I look forward to our discussions and deliberations and to an exciting exchange of ideas that Immanuel Wallerstein is providing the keynote address to these proceedings could not be more fitting he has been asking the important questions about borders either those darn by political geography or by academic discipline as part of a fundamental reconceptualization of what it means to do social science Emmanuel has established a framework for thinking and acting in the world a mode of analysis in social science speak within which he is asking us to engage in a fundamental protest a protest on the one hand against the ways in which we thought we knew the world and a protest on the other that reflects the real protest about the profound and deepening inequalities of the world a protest that expresses the intense polarizations that exists and that are so politically central to our time for me Emmanuel's protest serves as a continuous challenge a challenge to do better in an academic world in which the production of knowledge has been quite deliberately...
