on the nose good afternoon everyone thank you for joining the niskanen Center this afternoon to discuss one of many many immigration updates even as recently as changes that were that were flagged last night on asylum I'm Christy de pena I'm the vice president of policy and the director of immigration at the Niskanen Center and I am very pleased to moderate today's discussion if you're not yet familiar with in the scannin Center we're a 501 C 3 non partisan organization that operates well remotely now but generally speaking in Washington DC to advance an open society by actively really engaging in the war of ideas and directly engaging in the policy-making process we work with both Republicans and Democrats on a number of issues like climate science like poverty and Welfare and of course most relevant for this discussion for immigration as well we're so pleased to be joined today by our guest speaker Doug Rand Doug's a senior fellow and director of the technology and innovation initiative at the Federation of American scientists and he's the co-founder of boundless which is a technology company that really empowers families to better navigate the immigration system and if you haven't visited the boundless website you should there's a lot of good research and materials there as well Doug also served in the White House for over six years as assistant director for entrepreneurship in the Office of Science and Technology Policy he's a graduate of Yale's law school and their School of Management and has a masters and undergraduate degrees from Harvard where he studied and I did not know this about you Doug evolutionary biology very interesting and of course we're happy to be joined by anise canons Matthew Lockhart who is our government affairs manager for immigration he leads all of our departments legislative outreach efforts he focuses on daca work visa issues and most poignant Leon a lot of refugee issues his writing has been published all over the place and his research and commentary have been featured in NPR the New York Times Washington Post The Wall Street Journal pretty much any outlet that you can think Matthew graduated from Hofstra University in New York with degrees in both political science and in economics so today Doug and Matthew are going to have a conversation that hits on a number of different issues from naturalizations and some of the research that both of our organizations have done there USC is insolvent Singh and and they're they're looming bankruptcy some public charge issues we are gonna do a quick overview of many of the Bands that we have seen since the beginning of this year related to not only the the coronavirus crisis but also now potentially we'll get into the the new Asylum rule that was unofficially published last night but we expect to be officially published on June 15th we will save some time to answer some questions as well so throughout...
