hey what's up guys welcome to the channel you're watching bob's decline lyman blogger where we cover anything and everything that has to do with power lines for those of you that are new to the channel my name is aaron i've been alignment on the east coast of canada for about 18 years now number one today we're going to be taking a look at splicing wire so there's generally three different types of wire when it comes to power lines we've got our triplex we've got our acsr and underground cables so for purposes of this video we're going to splice in the triplex mostly because you follow the same process for primary acsr as you do for triplex although triplex has three wires as far as splicing underground cables this guy was cut off a 7200 volt system things get a little bit more complicated as you can see inside that cable there's several layers of insulation wire we're going to cover that in another video so whenever you're splicing triplex guys it's important to remember that all the tension goes on the neutral that neutral wire actually has a steel core that carries the weight of the wire as it goes from span to span so you can see up here in this pole to run a one out triplex and that preform grip is grabbing right ahold of that neutral wire there's not any tension whatsoever on the two blocks on that triflex so in order to splice triplex properly you want to use a sleeve that's specially designed not only for the ampacity of the wire but also designed to hold the tension of that neutral you are going to see in the field sometimes wire spliced with preforms crimpets crimp it's right on the neutral stuff like that and i mean once you get out in a storm sometimes you got to do what you got to do all i can say about that is make sure you follow the standards according to the company and the jurisdiction you work for so there are two different sleeves that are approved for work methods within the company that i work for in order to do splices with one of which is the automatic sleeve which kind of works like as chinese finger trap one of these days we'll get one down off the lines we'll cut it apart that way we don't waste a new one and the other way is with a compression sleeve in which you need to use an md6 style crimper presses on you need the proper size dies so today we're going to be splicing two watt triplex so it's important when you're choosing your sleeve that you make sure it's identified on the sleeve what size wire it is used for so you can see here both these sleeves are rated for two odd acsr it will also indicate on the sleeve the proper size die here we...
