hey my name is Seth wood and I hope you accept this video for my application for you the u.s. banned scholarship [Music] yep that's me I'm a horn player at Claridge High School in Collierville Texas I've been playing horn for a little over six years although I have loved music my entire life yes I come from a family of horn players hence the desire to apply for scholarships but really I hope to show how I exemplify the youth education and arts mission to develop magnificent human beings through participation in the Performing Arts I wanted to address the last question first simply because I feel it is the most important and one of the main reasons participating in music is important to me how do i best exemplify magnificence in my community being in band has taught me to think outside of myself and helps me focus on serving others I have been in the scouting program for 10 years and have had countless opportunities to help in the community last year for my eco project I helped to provide for some needs at the local battered women's shelter the need for privacy is critical and the blinds in the shelter were in terrible shape I was able to get donations for not just one floor of windows but every window in the entire shelter and installed the blinds myself as they only allowed a few people clearance to enter the shelter the rooms for the families were bare except for bunk beds so he made shelves for them to put their belongings in I also gathered donations for other needs at the shelter I felt especially grateful to do this service as I visited a shelter often when I was young to visit my aunts and cousins who lived there for two years last year the state of Texas was reeling from the destruction of Hurricane Harvey with so many weekends filled with the marching band I was glad to have a free weekend to travel down to Houston to help families save their homes the need was overwhelming as we passed so many destroyed towns and homes as we started working we knew time was against us and saving the structural integrity even two weeks after the hurricane water was still standing in the homes we worked in a neighborhood across the street from an oil refinery without running water or electricity combined with the humid heat of the Houston area it was hard stinky and even toxic work we slept in a local junior high with thousands of other volunteers and despite the cramped quarters and less-than-desirable showering Arrangements I was humbled to be a part of such an undertaking I also felt compassion for all the people unable to go home I was able to help at three homes that weekend but I wish I had time for more we threw her shoes out as they had disintegrated from all the toxic water and drove the five hours home barefoot [Music] one final example of serving community took place this year in January CPS placed three foster children in our home even though we knew it would only be six month placement it still turned our house upside down with a CT SAT tests AP classes and exams all state auditions and everything else that consumes a junior in high school I wonder how I would be able to manage everything and still help out at home but I tried the best I could the oldest child was 11 and had been through a lot in her life my mother knew that music would help her get through this tough time and petitioned the choir teachers to let her join choir picking her up after rehearsals I could see the healing power of music and the change it made in her this leads me back to the first question this is why music is important to me it's more than just the chance to perform in front of a crowd or the friends you make or the skills you learn it's about the lies that are touched both those I share it with as well as my own this is why I've chosen music to be my future career path I haven't decided what music I'm gonna go into whether it be performance or education or composition or writing drill maybe I even do drum corps what I do know is that the experiences I've had so far have given me so many skills and options it's kind of hard to choose performing in the Texas Allstate band [Music] as well as the Fort Worth Youth Orchestra [Music] I've been highlights in my performance experience I have attended camps band camps music Institute's porn symposiums and festivals all over the country I have received many awards including outstanding brass soloist in my district and placed first in one of the most competitive regions in Texas music education is also important to me the middle school I attended was recently chosen to perform at the Midwest clinic in Chicago this December they held rehearsals over the summer and I worked with half the section so the director could focus on the other half I donated this time to help my alma mater as well as improve my own teaching skills on a side note I will be performing with my family at the Midwest clinic as guest artists another skill I have learned from band has been composing and arranging music this summer I arranged music from the movie The Incredibles for over 75 horns from beginner to professional at the UTA honors one camp it isn't always easy to find music written for what you want or need so arranging it myself has helped and has been very rewarding participating in band has also taught me leadership skills almost half our section are freshmen in this year so I have my work cut out for me as a section leader but I have really enjoyed fostering that unity encouraging growth and motivating them to try their best I have also held many leadership roles in my church Scouts and community I have worked closely with City Council members school board members and other local leaders and various community events I even performed a dance in front of the mayor and other local leaders and teachers and appreciation of their hard work before marching band and all the dancing we do in that performance group you would have never seen me do this a band has given me the confidence to get in front of anyone that's our drum major on throwing around neither of us have any dance experience outside of what band has given us this also brings me to physical fitness I have been in sports since I was 2 but I have worked harder sweat more and broken more bones being in band in sports or scouting combined this has instilled a love of physical activity that will hopefully last me for life just last year I ran a half marathon for my mother on Mother's Day after her surgery for cancer none of these experiences would have happened without music in my school [Music] [Music] this is what makes music important to me and what I hope to continue to advocate and work for in my future field and study [Music] thank you for your consideration
