hi everybody my name is bria and today i am back with another law school video so today is going to be about law school recommendation letters who to ask and how to ask so if that's something that you're interested in please keep watching all right before we get started i'm gonna pause briefly so that you can go ahead and hit that subscribe button all right you done oh gosh recommendation letters this is a very important part of your package because this is somebody else's opinion of you and their endorsement for you to pursue your law degree so take who you ask very seriously so for undergraduate students it would be smart to ask your professor somebody who has a close relationship with you and can speak to your strengths if you do research or something where you work really closely in a professional capacity with a professor it would be smart to ask that person if you all get along and that's all working out i would suggest that you ask them in person and then follow up with an email because when you get with somebody one-on-one go to their office hours they're more likely to help you and tell you what you need to do and give you advice that you need and be sort of like a mentor to you so pick somebody in that capacity and then they'll tell you what they need from you to write you a recommendation letter because as professors that's something they do all the time for me i didn't ask an undergraduate professor because i was so far removed from undergrad and i did my master's program so i asked a graduate professor my undergrad university was humongous i went to the university of georgia so if i would have asked five years well four years post um undergrad they probably would be like who are you and i can't remember many of their names anyway yeah that's why i asked my grad school professor our classes were about 30 students and we moved in cohorts so we were able to get to know each other more and my professor remembered me right off the bat i sent him an email because i wasn't in proximity to him to ask him in person because i went to grad school in new york and i now live in philadelphia and that worked out perfectly so if you're a non-traditional student like me you can ask your employer somebody who is overseeing your work and knows how much work you put in how diligent you are that is going to show that you have transferable skills for law school so ask your employer you can ask them in person because you see them most days and they 100 will be willing to write you a letter if you are doing a good job at your job so i asked the ceo of my organization the charter school that i work at and he wrote me a recommendation letter he encouraged me to apply to all the schools that i wanted to on my list even reach schools because my recommendation would be so good um that's what he said so i was happy to ask him for a recommendation letter and get one from him on the lsac website you have to purchase the cas the credit assembly service and it's going to make sure that all of your applications get sent to the schools that you need to get sent to on the lsac website you're going to have to submit each individual recommendation school to the recommender so that they can write you a recommendation for each individual school i asked my recommenders to write a recommendation letter just blanket for the school because i didn't want them to accidentally write temple on the howard letter or like you know anything could happen so i just said please do not put any school names just put like your university your law school your organization and that worked out perfectly i mean i never saw the recommendation letters because it goes directly from recommender to the lsac website but clearly they did something right because i got into all five schools after you've been accepted send them thank you letters give them recognition on their part in helping you get to where you want to be i am going to send my recommenders little letters with a picture of me on the first day of school to just to thank them for their contribution to getting me to law school so very excited to do that hopefully they don't closer relationship if you're in proximity to a person it's always better to ask in person and they should already know what path you're on if they don't know that you want to go to law school maybe that's not the recommender you should ask because you should ask somebody who has a close relationship with you and if you are so far out from applying start building that relationship so that you have recommenders to ask okay so that's something that you definitely need to get on board with if you're really far off from applying if you need help requesting a recommendation letter like writing
