and speaking of email as if i send you one i'll probably just sign it off michelle or dubs or something like that but that's it that's all i do i don't add she hair or anything like that any kind of pronouns just my name will do me fine thank you very much but i'm not scottish civil servant because the scottish government wants the 8 000 strong civil service to start putting he him she hair or even non-standard terms such as zee or zere on email signatures this is apparently supposed to create a more inclusive workplace for lgbtq plus well fair enough uh you may think but the only flaw in the plan is that at least probably around 60 percent of the staff there don't want to do that so joining me now to discuss this is writer and lecturer katie john wentz katie what do you think to this i'm torn i think it's uh i think the awareness it's good to be raising awareness but anytime you kind of force it on people it's going to backfire and they've already done this as a as an invite on the on the internet in scottish government to about 8 000 people they ask them do you do you already do this would you do this and nearly half of them replied one in six said they were already doing it one in four said they might but two-thirds said they would never do it why hasn't um the scottish government got better things to be doing than concentrating on the signatures of their staff i don't get it who where is this pressure coming from well i'm trans i'm non-binary and i don't have pronouns in my signature don't you but so who's doing it then well i think a lot of it is i would i would regard some of it as misguided allyship um in the sense it's good to be encouraging inclusion but if you encourage it in such a way that people feel forced into it it backfires and and it creates actually a more hostile work environment instead of an inclusive work environment so i think you've got to be very careful um i don't want to walk around with a label on my head saying this is my pronoun this is who i am i want people to discover me to get to know me the person so what is your preferred pronoun um they or she i'm not offended by either if people say he because they hear a deep masculine or your name or your name exactly i mean this whole business about pronouns change takes a long time and it's very confusing this whole debate is quite confusing you know when i say change takes time it takes time for people to get used to it um when you when you're addressing anybody normally you would use their name you wouldn't say she he it...
