hello there i've had a lot of folks ask me about the orange box with a meter on it sat on top of my test gear so i thought i would explain what it was and how it came about this of course and some of you may already have realized is a cyanide meter now when tuning radio receivers a synapse meter is a very useful tool that can be used put simply to listen to the audio signal from any source and indicate to the technician using the equipment when the signal is less noisy or less distorted it does this by listening out for a one kilohertz audio tone that is carried on the audio input from the device under test which in most cases for me at least is a cb or a ham radio receiver the term cyanide is an abbreviation for the following it's a signal plus noise and distortion divided by the noise plus the distortion a figure for this measurement you will hear most commonly is a figure of 12 db cyanade this essentially is a reference to the audio signal at any given signal level the lower the signal level that can produce a 12 db cyan signal the more sensitive and less noisy that receiver is the circuit for this is quite simple and i'm going to show you how you can make a cyanide meter at home with basic tools and a few components that are easily available the basic circuit block consists firstly of a cascaded agc amplifier this ensures that the signal level stays at a constant average reading regardless of the input level fluctuations and with this design is tolerant between 40 millivolts and 10 volts this signal is then fed into a one kilohertz band reject filter which removes the one kilohertz signal component leaving only the noise and the distortion element this component is then amplified and rectified by a rectifier circuit which is used to drive the needle on the meter and since the reject filter is held constant the meter can be directly calibrated in cyanad values now my circuit is based on the motorola r1013a synad meter however as i have no requirement for the one kilohertz tone generator or the ac voltmeter or the audio output even on this system i just decided to use this as an indication meter only so this is very similar to the version one of the helper instruments cyanide meter which you may have seen online now before you break out your soldering irons i will mention there is a software synap meter available that uses your computer sound card and your pc made by a company called comtech it does work but i did find even on a fast pc that the lag was quite noticeable compared to the analog meters but it might be worth a try if you don't fancy building one there are other options that are software based but...
