spending account and your healthcare reimbursement accounts now these are great benefits that your employer offers to give you more control over your healthcare spending and it's our hope to make it really easy to use these great benefits so you can pay for your out-of-pocket expenses and move on with your lives so your employee offers two spending accounts which i'll go over in detail but before i jump in i want to note that the healthcare flexible spending account does require an active election and so what that means is every year you need to let your employer know that you like to participate and how much you'd like to set aside from your paycheck to fund this account but one thing that makes this account really great is that anything you take out of your paycheck lowers your taxable income it increases your take-home pay so your paychecks are a bit bigger and then you have this pool of money set aside to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses so it's a really great plan that we hope you take advantage of but let's go into more detail about these two accounts and what similarities they have as well as a few very important differences we'll start with a healthcare flexible spending account this is like a bank account that you can use to pay for your out-of-pocket medical expenses both for you and your eligible dependents you can set aside up to 2 750 for these expenses and whatever amount you elect will be deducted from your paychecks evenly over the course of the plan year and what we do is give you a debit card that's loaded with your funds so you can pay for your expenses really easily most of the time you'll swipe your card and you're good to go but there will be times when we may ask for further documentation to make sure that what you have purchased meets irs requirements for eligible expenses but don't worry we will let you know what we need why we need it and how to get it to us what's really great about this spending account is that whatever you elect you can use right away and so if you elect the full two thousand seven hundred fifty dollars you can use that full two thousand seven hundred fifty dollars right away so if you have a large medical expense early in the plan year swipe your card file a claim up to the amount of your election even if you haven't made all of your payroll deductions yet you can still use the full amount but it's important to note that if the year goes by and you do not use your funds if you have anything left over then you do lose those funds so as you determine if you want to participate and how much you want to elect make a plan think ahead determine how much you think you'll need because once you make that election you cannot change it unless you experience a qualifying event now let's talk a little bit about your health care reimbursement accounts they're similar but there are also a few key differences i'd like to point out first the healthcare reimbursement accounts are tied to your medical plan and so if you're in the medical plan with icuba then you also have the healthcare reimbursement account if you're not in the medical plan then you do not have access to these funds another key difference is that rather than funding the account with money you take out of your paycheck this account is funded by your employer and they give you money every month that you can then use to pay for your health care expenses as well as the health care expenses for those enrolled in the iqbal medical plan with you and so this is a great account as well because it is employer money that you can use to offset your out-of-pocket costs and we do give you a debit card as well which makes it really easy to access those funds another important thing to note is that if you are in the medical plan for 36 months then the funds that your employer gives into your healthcare reimbursement account they start to roll over year over year for you to keep using so if you do not use funds in a given year then they're available to you in the next year and so that's an amazing incentive for you to take part in the cuba medical plan and so we hope you do and as again as you do you'll find that you have more control over your health care spending you're lowering your taxable income you're increasing your take-home pay and then you have these pools of money that you can use to pay for ahead of time that's what i do i call my doctor's office when my annual visit is scheduled i ask for them to call in the blood work in advance i go to quest and i get my blood work completed and then all the same visit my doctor is able to review the blood work with me and complete that form all at the same time some items to keep in mind the screening will include cholesterol hdl ldl triglycerides blood sugar blood pressure in a1c so you need to also make sure that you're fasting when you get your blood work done remember to take the form with you to your annual physical it's important both you and your physician sign the form and then your doctor's office can fax it in with the number that's listed right on the form you're encouraged also to request a copy for your own records and if necessary you can also upload it to the quest portal in your own quest portal members should allow at least 30 days for the form to be uploaded in fact to see the results and the final
