collective contributions that allow the aec remaining independent self appointed organization it serves to educate empower and engage alumni from every decade profession and geographical location our board of directors with into no better way to show the appreciation that to do what we do best to come together again as a community and share our common bonds so tonight we thank you each why do we what inspires their support but before we do I have food topics of dry kitchen Scotland's discussing what introduction I first or I mentioned briefly the negotiations currently taking place between the aec rubbish University Foundation at this residential college and secondly I'm I will be introducing our newest donor recognition society first time publicly and fairly reintroducing the association of Douglas who will share some dreams as well almost a year ago April twentieth 2015 a date that will live in infamy rubbish University and the University Foundation took actions to eliminate the APC involved in fundraising as a primary fundraiser for Douglas couch well done make friends and the ad leadership do not agree with that action and as a result to your see Rutgers foundation and the APC became a mediation process to resolve the issues left July fit associations of a taking place since then and please know that our leadership of the aec is working very hard with a lot of volunteers and with our staff they come to a settlement that is acceptable to all parties which means what is best for a pc in what's best for future w students because of the descriptions are disclosure discussions that take place during mediation I can't share more detail with you on that stacks however I recognize the process is take longer than anyone imagined I want to thank you all for your patience and especially for your continued support during this time your financial support your advocacy the ADC and your continued involvement at been inspiring and are greatly appreciated by all that's involved I assure you are most generous and loyal contributors that we will inform you of the outcome as soon as the issues have been resolved now the ADC takes great pride in being above i created a long life driven and alumni led very much of what we do is because of our volunteer along that leadership one example is our plant giving to lead a group of alumni colleges with expertise in a state wall my name's are planning and marketing this committee is working to promote ways that one day and friends to make contributions in a financially sound way such as maximizing charitable deductions over using the state tax if you're on this mission anyway so if you put answer questions about it okay there she is you have to get that the young woman over that about this to Carrollton this will recently recommended a new donor recognition society be created they suggested that we are contributors who include supporting the APC in the financial plans as member any new IV society in February the board of directors of the ADC approve this recommendation so tonight's the first time we have publicly use this new society name I believe it will not take off the IV society becoming well known title as the one for plaintiff donors just as enables with dundas new ship sir learn a lot of you have these pins on here is known as the recognition society for those who give at the highest level to be aetc annual fee every year this posted by a podium shows her IV society graphic there was a small competition on what kind of argument another and also it has all the name tags of members in attendance as well a bag please ask anyone who is a fighting society member who's in attendance to please stand I want to know that there is a typo in or program which was discovered it's very little bit was a typo was supposed to say the eigen society recognizes those who have thoughtfully included support through the AAPC not and not 48pc so I want to push that out so we're very happy to have a good way to recognize you off with your generosity we hope that you proudly wear the idea of emblem I'm looking forward to getting mine whenever we gather as a community it is our way to thank you and to recognize you for your support others also may be inspired to join why I think this is if you came on what it makes a lot of sense because it is a traditional symbol of the month one day I need a strong and resilient like Douglas winter it spreads like crazy just wondering we're not crazy it spreads like just like we have we're all over the world obvious suggests wisdom and how often has the image of undercover there's IV wolves of academia this evening taken one once a week a poster here or look at the explanation is in the program I think you all but breathable and giving committee came up with a perfect thing for a generous playing gift donors if you remember the plan giving committee again I ask you to raise your hands if people could see you okay oh yeah now the next is my third opportunity is to be able to reduce assoc detailed lieberman jean jacket is not able to join us this evening but the associate dean Helen engineering through increasing the recruitment and retention of women undergraduates I'm proud to say that through the collaboration of Douglas and the School of Engineering our rate of retention is astonishing according to a study by the US Department of Education the attrition rate for engineering students nationwide is nearly sixty-two percent and her women has even lower in our first year of the Riley Douglas engineering Living Learning Community retained ninety percent of the women who involved and retention rate and the retention rate just increased from there with a retention rate of nearly ninety seven percent of the woman who joins in 2014 this program is such a success that it's now serves as the model for a new community that will be opening in the fall a computer science living learning community that we hope will have similar success in recruiting and retaining women in computer science which in that area is even more underrepresented than in engineering the computer science Living Learning Community opening this fall did just receive a grant for 250,000 from the National Science Foundation and is a joint collaboration between douglas and the rutgers computer she funded the evidence service field 1949 scholarship as well as the last forever in our hearts second individual I want attention Ruth Schilling has a pleasant 1950 Ruth had a petite frame and a very delicious madam she was interested in everyone that she met your Florida sup avoid circumstances upon first meeting her you might not have guessed her full character but moments into the conversation it becomes clear that she was a woman of substance and played carry an active obama and a generous supporter whose legacy Liz authors scholarship she and her husband created specifically competitive students from disadvantaged backgrounds the Edward L has a junior and Vanessa Hennessey foundation scholarship in addition or a KDC offices are located in the booth show enhancing at the advert Hennessey gave that gift in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary which is also Ruth's 50th injured JC reunion the gift floor of our hearts then I was there was wonderful and continue to do so now thirdly Clara Kreutzer if you were Douglas during a long hot dirty nuclear chruch of class of nineteen fifty-five professionally clara was a career counselor at douglas for many many years person is she was one of our most active among the volunteers combining these two passions their help too fast and for many years served as the first chairman of the AEC X terms of class magazine is all for the scholarship she is that pushed in honor of her parents the Franken Francis futures scholarship funds unless they am luiz moura Spezza 1943 Louise was a consistent supporter and great danger she served the APC in many many ways include the service as its president two brothers who showed in a network place for Rhodesia PA ABC in her professional career with johnson Johnson and her prowess and many games of bridge I didn't plan with the ground cultures right Louise's generosity will continue to assist up the students or scholarship fund in honor of her parents the military is Charles M or scholarship so please join me in a moment of silence our le bouff player leaves an additional friends and alumni recently completed so much during thank you every jealous of 18 that I've had a pledge of the world worth has inspired me wonderful we're more about dentists a woman so so pleased tonight that three of them may have agreed to share with us what has inspired support first time are one that I know the best of the law is kind of like the strfkr DiMartino pleasant 1985 get comfortable Barry is now investment banker JP Morgan Securities a member of the agency plan gaming community unit raise your hand yeah as well as a society member she is a member of the APC board directors and as a refuge universities trustee Drummond very put together I was asked off for five minutes and i will do my best i promise to stay within them oh but i was asked just to talk a little bit about what motivated me to give and first let me just say it's really a pleasure to be here tonight to be with you in a month to your home yeah I think I actually I was thinking about this while I was making my chocolate chip cookies over the weekend and what I'd love to do because I love to eat them a lot um you know I think it's too full for me in terms of what really motivates motivated me to give and it's kind of easy really um you know I was the first one in my family to go to college it was a big deal on the oldest of six and it was quite a change for me and I into as a chemistry major in 1981 it was hard and so I told myself that I would only play lacrosse which I played the spring and i would say at the Marquis fire those are my two to pursuits outside of the classroom and I struggling with my grades and it was really feeling down and I was in a relationship for someone I wasn't so sure about so lo and behold it's the fall of Katy too and I was going to go home for the weekend just to get away and I had to stay because the fire was seen at the convocation for Mary Hartman it was becoming the teen of Douglas College how lucky for me that I was there at that moment because she spoke about the importance of a woman's education and the things that are so beneficial to young women when they have a woman's education and I remember that women who have a woman's education go on to non-traditional careers they do I remember the per se they do better on psych tests I group that chance so surely after that I ditch the boyfriend and to change my major and I ran a good student government which at the time had an opening for the treasure unexpectantly that really changed my life at dulles on it really gave me the opportunity to be engaged and to be a part of this community and to really embrace what it was to have a woman's education not just in the classroom because at that point was koed so if it was really to have it outside of the classroom and within the day-to-day work that you do outside with your friends and your colleagues and all along the way aadc was there it was very good at there's so many cases that I see as a comeback that I remember as a student and just talking with someone tonight and always there always support it I really i just thought was one of the same I mean I just thought that was just the cottage was just an extension and then a few years later my senior year we are sitting around the table deciding about who should go to DC to attend a plan a three-way conference in DC and Monta me a couple of is trying to should go and such as mirror you should go and so why can't I don't have the money to pay for that I was paying my way through polish and a delights of line I'm bed with a delay y all we saw all up she was also yes I was wonderful she's coming down and she said I'm going to support you for this um she said I remember exactly because I want to see a woman the legislature song that now i plug it down because i'm not there but i'm trying to otherwise i always have an oyster with it and that was that really just that that experience of going to DC was for me it was also a very corny experience in my life so those are the two things i got at college really um you know my experience here at douglas was so impactful for me because it's important class work is really important but it's who you become as a person that helps you survive in this world and there's so much that i did at douglas and with the support of a you see that really allowed me to develop who I hopefully and I wanted to become and build the confidence that I needed so it was pretty easy for me when I graduated it was kind of a no-brainer I said to my husband walk you know you know this is something that I'm going to support it's very important to me because I want to get back and I continue to give to the AED stay and have been it through the AAG state because I think they really believe in the importance of a woman's education and we still have a long way to go and as alums I can see it now how important is to be mentoring young women I can't tell you how many calls I get at work from young from young men and women in college out of college looking to make a connection wanted to understand the workplace our roles even as alums whether we do it as financially or in other ways is so critical to a student's experience and and we're really with each other for those for many years to come and I my connection to Douglas kind of got me in touch with Jean box which has been a wonderful and enriching friendship from you as well so those are the things that make me and I thought I had a chance to show I now white Madeline piggish Kurowski less of 1967 battle is also where Heidi visit evening in addition she has been a consistent supporter of banana peel in a member of the tables with Douglas leadership so we'll get the dead opinion let's go valid has served on a number of vulture ever struck DC including recently serving on the remote remember Miriam hood it was just one of my favorite committee to a seal so I just lost my space so oh my my my left left us in Ephesians but so could happen another stick by them have that here the rest in here in the depth of the track is never happened borowski places ever come up and share with user experiences thank you and my apologies I'm humbled to be here ameritrade such a wonderful speech and she said a number of things that I feel very strongly about though this collar show was very helpful and meeting new friends and making contacts and getting that confidence that would be a key and it helped me so much in my career I was very fortunate when I attended the list that I had a scholarship and I know how important scholarships are two students so anyone that helps in this area it's just so wonderful I also saw him when I retired I'm going to have time to devote to organizations that I really wanted to help and one of the was the MDC and I wanted to make friends and have a new family and this is what the ACC has intimated I found a new family I was very happy to be asked to join them ever really committed and we have a number of members here tonight believe are very hardworking and dedicated share resource key and founders day other events you've probably seen a lot of our member really on display and it's a chance to research the history and see all that bill this woman have accomplished over the years it's really great experience anyone that wants to join committees I urge you to do so there is a need for that find an area that you're like and participate however you can another thing I've enjoyed when the ADC is taking their trips they do wonderful trip and I'm taking about telling them i started in the year 2000 with going to Greece and my most recent trip was to stop where I develop a new appreciation for scones haven't developed a taste for thought yet I'll just label one so you have to take a native trips I urge you to do so in a really wonderful trips so I always thought that I want to have people to connect with throughout my life and like a lot of families that will be he would transition DC is going through some transition now but this is a time I think it's really important to give your support anywhere you can financially or taking part in serving on committees we need to support our family like our biological families we want to support them and then cat and I think this is very important that we support our a ABC family so thank you for coming and please continue with your support Jordan is a scholarship benefactor having established their neathia pivot Renwick and Nathaniel and Jinora provide scholarship fund she's an active member to a DC has served on the board and is the former chair of the ABDC by the loving network while band chair should like to try to establish the joy dr. gates fellowship know he was the first african-american to attend the school raising thousands of dollars for the Monday friends corporations and foundations Sheridan is also remembered Abel's with Douglas leadership circle we appreciate hearing their story tonight hey that was tonight I want to thank Valerie and I leave for inviting me to say a few words about what motivates me to give the Douglas it like Mary said it's really easy I love jumping like Mary I was one of the first generation to attend college when i was growing up in a very rural working class community and the caribbean and never in a million years thought I would go to college never crossed my mind for money I just knew that it played out my family immigrated to the United States we end up in a beautiful town for montclair which I could no longer for I might do a lot better but as a high school student not going without having a family with going to college I depend on like a goddess counselors and my teachers to help me so I found two colleges that I applied to Oberlin College in Ohio and universe offensive mania and my sister was attending bubbles if you've got a 50 hours so I did the particle walkers I chose you 10 and then I'm going to visit your pattern I didn't like it and I came to visit doubles and I loved it so I just know what to do with a conscience because my family on my face school teachers what Hugo need computer go in aqua ink pen so one day my mom saw me scrolling and looking on happy it what's the matter with you girl I thought bus stop crying except I don't want to go to bed so she SAT me down with a nice conversation and she ends up saying she who thinks for herself thinks guest I never forgot that and I use that thing today so I called Douglas then call your pampers I called Douglas it said told my sob story to someone to answer the college hall and I said I want to come with others el amor yo u Penn and she says no me call me back I stopped at the phone call me back in half an hour and said you can come two doubles we love to have you and call you cuz I'm not coming and I have never looked back why get to Douglas Douglas gave so much to me when I came here for four years I can walk into college hall any day and give a happy story or sad story and I knew that was going to be Dean Wilma Harris waiting to talk to me right here today the second floor office is right there so I hit her first then imma go to teen Richards and demian Yoakam and it was just wonderful is that I got a job working right here I was showing I try girl get by the little area I used to sit on my desk on Saturday night to otherwise was partying and one delicious schlegel and gonna ground Boatswain's then I want to graduate school I was wounded by the school and coffee and Yoko said I'm going to be going to grab the school can I be doing Dracula sister the Douglas just sharing you got a first apply and get it Oh see the city so I find I got accepted a corner I came back I served as a graduate assistant here on the show of the Stabler woman who encouraged me and meant to me and looked after me and for opportunities to me it was just a wonderful experience I've including my lil sis afternoon she came here I think she graduates me about Alison came here as well didn't he said I am NOT going there I pop my independence there so she went off a local college okay I'm great to come here I can't i think that the kana kuti lady right here he's gonna love it more you love you I love Douglas oh I want to say that even when I was poking around your school let the hennessy call me up from the ABC attend if you have a scholarship is no way we had that keep this a gift that keeps giving so I came here and loved working with a GCS of a morning is that but it doesn't know what to say is when I was sharing the van back on the network we came up with the idea of kind of the scholarship and boy we got together I mean Wilma Harris I see some others up at carroll monroe and i saw Karen terrain and when everybody peacock together Dolores times and went either way we'll study we come together this how we were not just on a step creative scholarship we wanted our scholarship and we want the floors to help me do that fluoride in Florida the dollar scholarship um I believe the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step so my parents and my grandparents did not have the opportunity to go to college and I wanted to do something that would remind them that they went to college give me my mom used to come to mom's day all the time so where she was she can go in here when she came here she hung up at Douglas College so while it was conscious but to create a scholarship in their name my parents and education is everything to all of us go to college i called linda hennessy and said i don't know how to do this I've never done in the Dow scholarship I own I'm not shocked to do it and she said you mean work with you so she became out having on it I mean this networking your Lord so Cara Lee my work them to something we work it out and I was so happy that we endowed a scholarship this year and my mom's name she was to be able to come to one of these scholarships and see the first recipient of her scholarship she's passed them along to glory but I'm so glad we didn't while she was alive and then way too fast I'd like to do it Douglas has been there for me Douglas have killed me so much it's a joy and absolute joy to get back to them thank you very much if you were found in 2012 you supported her as a student it did it graduated 2015 but she was a student speaker at her visual Smith of this leadership circle reception so Yoko you'll be recognizing Hodgman at that time she was very impressive and she had a lot of leadership positions here the power now she's the people reactive I love huh in fact he's a member of the community board Isley assembly Spanish dead lunch was quite a success and she brief talk to us a note about transition for being a student to being my London hello everyone first I would like to just say that please bear with me I have a cold and the unwise decision of drinking cold water so I'll start now my name is the dts thing and i graduated from rutgers university and douglas last May I first became involved with the aetc after my first year of college I was the student body representative from Douglas County Council as the external vice president to the ADC board of directors and I would like to share what the ADC means to me and why as an alumna I have involved I had chosen Douglas because I knew the Douglas was a community where we young woman were supported and where those women were encouraged to take leadership positions in their fields I also knew the purchase of Douglas like scholarships professional and academic support and special housing just worth of those students but what I didn't know up until the end of my first year was the major role that EDC played in the opportunities I've had available as a Douglas student the EDC supporting me and in many ways and through all of you also first of all financially I was awarded many scholarships merit scholarships to attend plan and to even study abroad which are really appreciate and I also enjoyed other special perks of being involved to eat DC also i was able to attend the rebecca skloot lecture my sophomore year and sit in the VIP section and i'm a senior i was able to exchange with the supreme court judge in New York and the EDC has also encouraged my leadership development as a sophomore while I was serving as a rising sophomore while serving on the board they encouraged me to speak up even though I was sued on board writing sophomore and always really intelligent and complished women were all around me but yet my voice was said to be equal to that and as a young student I really appreciated how seriously they took me and have taken me all my years through college but what I cherish the most of my association with at EDC is the relationships I have formed I really enjoy talking to alumni and student I love this and I continue to love this and seeing and learning about the history of Douglas all the rules what they were supposed to do but they're not supposed to do and have it broke the rules and I also a student enjoy going out to lunch with some alumni and really learning a lot from them and gain advice yeah and also I really appreciated the support the emotional and the person support the valley and resting or rosemary keeps doing when I was going through a difficult time of my sophomore year and I also enjoyed my photo shoots with anne-marie and I just looked getting to know that wonderful ADC staff it was really fun working with you as students and it's it continued used to be a joy I alumna so as an alumna I want to continue to support a DC because the ADC has supported me I enjoyed contributing to Founders Day committee and had a lot of fun I was able to reconnect with some woman who had I had invent for a year and I met many more my wonderful woman and I look forward to meeting many more of you as i can see me to be involved with the hundred-year York reunion and also remaining weekend of the hundred year anniversary of the reunion weekend so for all the donors out there thank you very much for the scholarships that you have provided for students I know throughout my four years my life has a student wouldn't have been the same without your kind donations and you really helped me get along each semester and to the students I have the piece of advice when I attended one of these dinners as a student I asked a donor how can I ever repay you you have done so much and you know I really want to do something kind back you know I was thinking is there a gift like a good flowers what can I do and somebody told me it's not getting back directly to donors it's paying it forward and helping future students and helping those who come after you so for the young alumni or students just be aware of that and I hope to get involved and do that myself as soon as I can as to the ADC thank you so much for all your support these last five years I really appreciate it and some of my most cherished memories of college has been with the EDC and I look forward to making more memories thank you for this because a
