hi I'm Jim for Stickley on security and today I'm gonna be talking to you about a scam where criminals actually send you a cashier's check in the mail now what makes this particular scam rather ironic is that I was personally targeted by scammers with this attack a letter came to me via the US Postal Service and it had a return address of Appeal box in Canada other than that the envelope was relatively plain it just had my name and address on it I opened it up and inside there was a couple pages and the cashier's check that was made out to me for three thousand nine hundred fifty dollars obviously this was quite a surprise so I have to admit I'm pretty skeptical so when I got this check in the mail I was suspicious so took a look at it now I did notice right off the bat it did have the watermark in the paper that I would have expected it also had a perforated edge along the bottom which I would also expect with a cashier's check as I flipped it over the front in the back did have all the information that they're supposed to have in the proper markings in addition the coloring was right meaning it wasn't a photocopy this was a real cashier's check so at this point I was a little intrigued I looked at the two pages that were included with the envelope and one of them was some sort of a survey form the other page though is an extremely long letter as I started to read this letter the scam really began to materialize I won't read the whole thing to you but this is how it started dear shopper this is to inform you that based on a previous survey by our affiliate consumer survey specialist in which you indicated that you are interested in an additional income on a part-time basis you've been selected to participate in a paid consumer research program known as secret shopping as one of the people selected to represent our firm you will be acting as a customer service evaluator of selected companies in your area this campaign is an excellent means of earning hundreds of dollars weekly the letter goes on for a couple paragraphs explaining who the organization is and what a secret shopper does it then gets the good part first there's a phone number that I'm required to call to activate my cashier's check so I called the phone number call it up a man answers the phone I go yeah hi I received this cashier's check let's go on and he goes oh yeah no problem at all here's what you're going to do you're going to go down to your financial institution and you're going to deposit that check into your checking account and I go okay sounds good so far he goes okay now you're going to go and have to perform your job now you have 24 hours from the time that you deposit the check to the time that you must have this completed I go okay what is the task and they go well here's what you do you go to Walmart and at Walmart they have a MoneyGram service now I'm going to give you an account number and what I want you to do is I want you to go to that service and I want you to secret shop them and the way you're going to do that is you're going to transfer money out of your account to this account number I'm going to give you I go well why would I transfer money out he goes will remember I'm giving you a cashier's check or three thousand nine hundred fifty dollars and so what you're going to do is you're going to take from that money and you're going to transfer these funds back over to another account that I give you and I go okay and it goes but for your inconvenience for your work your compensation you're going to keep three hundred dollars so you're deposited 3950 into your account I'm going to go ahead and have you transfer out only three thousand six hundred and fifty so three hundred dollars is left behind that's your money to keep so now I have the information like okay well let me just recap with you to make sure I understand and that we're on the same page and he goes absolutely okay great you've sent me this cashier's check for three thousand nine hundred fifty dollars he says yes I feel so I'm gonna go to my financial institution and I'm going to deposit this into my checking account yep I go then I'm going to go down to Walmart and I'm going to use their money Graham service and I'm going to transfer out three thousand six hundred and fifty dollars to the account you provided me because that's exactly it I go and I get to keep three hundred ollars myself and he goes yeah it's that simple and 300 dollars is your compensation for your work I go wow this sounds like a great deal because it is it's a really great deal for you okay so let me tell you I'm a little skeptical I'm a little nervous it sounds kind of like it's a scam and immediately he becomes very aggressive and that's a typical typical column that's what they generally will do whenever is criminal other than trying to get you to do something this always raise their voice I'll get a little more aggressive and they'll try to kind of pressure you and push you into it and he goes well first of all you contacted us and I go what do you mean and he goes well I couldn't have your contact information unless you signed up somewhere to do this so first of all you signed up and I go oh okay sounds good because next we sent you a cashier's check and I go yeah I have that news a cashier's check is the same thing as cash it's guaranteed money and I go really because yeah it's not a personal check personal check bounce cashier's check though that's guaranteed money so there's no way I could scam you because this is real money it's yours to keep put in your account it is real and it is guaranteed let me stop right here for a moment and set the record straight there is no such thing as a guaranteed cashier's check a cashier's check could be forged just like a personal check and therefore it can bounce and there is no way to guarantee just because you have a cashier's check that you're gonna get the money that's on that check and that's what criminals will generally do though they'll try to convince you about something that sounds like it could be legitimate and they'll run with that and they'll try to make you believe that that's the way it is reality is there is no such thing as a guaranteed cashier's check obviously I knew this was a scam I've actually met people who have fallen victim this exact type of attack had I gone down to Walmart and transfer three thousand six hundred fifty dollars out of my account via MoneyGram and into another account I would have just had three thousand six hundred fifty dollars stolen from me because that cashier's check would have bounced this types of scenario is pretty normal a lot of people have fallen victim to it the storylines sometimes changes but the main idea is always the same that's where you will receive a check be required to deposit that check then immediately transfer funds out of your account and into another account if you come across this if you receive a check and somebody wants you to do this type of a scenario stop pick up the phone contact your financial situation and explain to them the situation they have seen this type of attack before and they will know exactly what to do and they'll be able to give you excellent advice on how you can protect yourself as always spend a little time and do a little research and protect yourself so you don't
