[Music] hello everyone and welcome to another episode of eat smoke drink I say all the time when I do these reviews that today is an exciting day every day a review whiskey is a bloody exciting day but today is exciting more exciting than usual because I'm reviewing the 1980 31 year-old lunar hub and signatory vintage car strangers now there's only five hidden versions of the eight bottles of this it's a 52.5% it is matured in a sherry butt and cast member 604 this was actually bottled in 2012 so it's a very very old bottling but I'm reviewing this in a way because in spirit it is going to be quite a similar spirit to the later and releases of Bruner Haven symmetry vintage of this kind of similar age matured in a sherry but means pretty much his entire life has been in a sherry but and you can see how bloody deep red remember it is amazing look at that it's just so rich and dark now it's a bit of a fallacy that that this means quality in a barrel just to let you know that because a lot on distillery bottlings will actually color their whisky they just trick you into thinking that these guys don't barrels to bottle no color no chill filtering in that sense so when you get a signatory vintage or a lot of independently bottled for that matter and you get that kind of color you know that the barrel activity has been crazy so you know when you see your average bottle and Julie free or some liquor store out there and you see really really brown whiskey chances are they color very exciting let's get nosey oh wow that's intense sweetness intense tenant intense earthiness intense leaf litter a hint of minerality and I love it sulfa a slight sulfuric smell to it now just to explain the sulfur to you as well so this might be a little bit of a longer review but I just want to tell that story about the sulfur so sulfur the sulfuric smell some people are sensitive to it some people are not I'm quite sensitive the sulfuric smell but a lot of independent bottled whiskey a lot of independent bottlers shall I say they actually shy away from the sulfuric smell the rust thickness that gessie pong of a smell cemetery vintage they don't in fact it's one of my favorite what lers because they don't shy away from there they like that roughness they're like that rustic nature I love that rustic nature but I also love the refinement of some bottlers so sooner to vintage they give it to your like Watson or it doesn't mean the whisky is bad at all they just tend to be a bit more rustic and gutsier and they have that fragrance that some people might shy away from and I'm getting that here very unique so what I'm getting is an intense sickly sweet smell it is definitely the sherry is just so prominent not even funny but what I'm really giving in there looks really strange I'm getting a [ __ ] or mummy flavor but I said umami flavor I'm getting a shitake mushroom so just imagine you good at a Chinese shop and you've got the drive shitake mushroom you soak it in water before you cut it up right I'm getting that water that comes off there there's sliced shiitake mushroom another kind of earthiness that I'm talking about oh that is oh wow what a treat I'm getting a bouquet of spice I'm talking cinnamon nutmeg raisins I'm getting dried fruits nuttiness it literally is like an embodiment of Christmas cake inside this wall of whiskey it's amazing what wow that is fantastic and I'm getting a slight very very slight metallic smell to it as well now I don't know where that comes from but I know that she Rika sometimes does give out uh slight minerality Metallica's taste but it could also be hey 31 years in the barrel the metal around that barrel could started to seep through a little bit and influence there was Steve who knows you know it's really hard to say and buna Harvin Munda habit is an I love whiskey but they're also very known for the good mix of Eila that isn't peter pin all of it is eaten I'm not getting much salinity there usually there would be but I'm not getting much cylinder to the officious overpowered by the the sherry bomb the spices fruit the stewed fruits their nuttiness the earthiness but let's have a look at the moment water let's just think with water little manly notes [ __ ] can add a lot more a man unites comes a lot more than attacking a mushroom leaf litter filthiness comes out a lot more black tea comes out a lot more then intense sweetness subsides the metallic increases the metallic smell increases the spice bouquet is simulated that's interesting the spice of the fruitcakes spice the desert spice extenuated the best and I'm getting a little bit of black pepper like a slight sharpness in the spice so that's quite interesting work samples are quite waxy in nature they smell very waxy and they smell oily they smell heavy fatty well let's see how it tastes all right exciting Wow interesting is not very sweet consider that the smell is an intense sweetness it's not really that sweet it's not really that sweet I mean obviously it's in a sweeter side but it's not that sweet Wow it's literally like a wet liver join me later freshly tanned leather its creamy the tannin is heavy but not too heavy so I like it it's got a real body to Anna Tanner and the oiliness is really quite apparent mmm it's got a slight clothes and a CD taste to it very spicy I mean I'm thinking maybe it's like a Vietnamese liquor it's got a nice even cloves in it not much fruitiness at all raisins I'm getting raisins and you know what I'm getting I'm getting dates I'm getting some dates in there you know that kind of an earthy sweetness of date I'm getting that wow that is fantastic to think that's three decades in the barrels just waiting to be set that's a heavily that's a heavy and very complex whiskey I mean that's that's a big mouthful chewy it's lingering it permeates in the mouth oh what a treat what a treat outstanding outstanding DRAM let's try the sample with water then it just um cleanse the palate Scottie Scott in my belly with water it does you do taste the spirit a little bit more what's interesting because without water some of the flavors are hidden but the spirit is quite subdued with water the spirit elevates a little bit everything else elevates but the spirit also elevate so I don't know we're trying to like more I think I like it without water more a lot of the flavors of intensity in the sharpness of relative sharpness not talking about bad sharpness but like the really hits out at you jumps out at you a lot of that flavor just it starts to dull with the water it's such a 2% it's on it's slightly higher than your normal whiskey but it's not too much higher and I think the water just really types it down but I'm getting pretty much the same of everything else just subdued you know the liver read the creaminess the firewood I defined the woods so the wooden wouldn't smoke but the and what I'm getting as well is yeah I think the water has kind of killed it a little bit even the pleasurable oiliness and the permeation are permeating or flavors in your mouth that's kind of dissipated as well yeah the excitement is not there with the water similar kind of flavors but no excitement there I think I think definitely I'm gonna recommend it with water now this is a 2012 Watling and I will list down the cast number and everything for you in case you can find it again generally speaking signatory vintage will release they will release buna Harvin's of roughly the same age for about 300 u.s. dollars which i think this one here as a special bottle or not it's definitely worthwhile buying would I revisit it again yes I do in fact I have a 28 year old at home so I want to really have that and see of what it's like compared to this one unfortunately I won't be able to fudge in saying that it is an outstanding drag in terms of a cigar pairing Wow you can pair this with anything I think without water extra bust enough it's oily enough to withstand its own it's not petered it's heavy sherry it's sweet you can go peppery cigars and that'll balance out the spice the hit the heat you could go triple Maduro if you like dessert and you know sweet tooth then go full double triple Maduro nicker speaker under crown or arm a sweet sweet side Maduro you can pair it with this and that will still be nice because it's not overly sweet it's on a pseudo sub it's not overly sweet so you know it'll be like a desert spec desert whiskey like I said you can't just find this anymore it was released in 2012 2013 around that time depending on where you are but I guess I want to make this video to say if you see a Bruna haven of a similar age or health even not a similar age but maybe an active barrel with a similar color go for it singletery vintage they don't disappoint with certain barrel lengths and buna Haven that seems like they do very well thank you for watching today and please hit subscribe please subscribe and
