[Music] we have a little Facebook couplet here let's start with Zuckerberg they finally wheeled him out he's making the rounds because Cambridge analytic a violating Facebook's Terms of Service basically tapped into your data through an app and ended up tracking your movements across Facebook and the rest of the internet and Facebook not only apparently let this happen is not really particularly it wasn't particularly concerned about it here is Mark Zuckerberg on CNN trying to feign human concern even mistakes here why shouldn't Facebook be regulated um I actually am Not sure we shouldn't be regulated you know I think in general technology is an increasing increasingly important trend in the world and I actually think the question is more what is the right regulation rather than yes or no should it be regulated what's the right regular column well there are some some basic things that I think that there are some big intellectual debates on on the the basic side you know there were things like ads transparency regulation that that I would love to see but if you look at you know how much regulation there is around advertising on TV and print it's just not clear why there should be less on the internet right you should have the same level of transparency required and you know I don't know if the bill is gonna pass I know a couple of senators are working really hard on this but we're committed and we've actually already started rolling out add transparency tools that accomplish most of the things that are in all the bills that now that people are talking about today because we just think this is an important thing people should know who is buying the ads that they see on Facebook and you should be able to go to any page and see all the ads that people are running to different on I mean none of those sort of I mean if you think television advertising and ownership rules work in the public interest I mean I I I get very concerned even as he's indicating a willingness to bring some regulation to Facebook I think Facebook and the big for tech companies I think are in some ways I think they're beyond regulation we're in nationalization and monopolies busting territory and that they obviously Amazon but all of them perform far too many functions and have way too much power and influence over this new stage of the economy but it's also just odd that like you know television anytime somebody talks in any way about making the internet more like television I get very nervous yeah they weren't saying that like years ago we should be regulated like television was now it's only that they've blown up and that the the blame is being put you know on individuals like Mark Zuckerberg who were 26 when he was making these sorts of determinations right exactly you know it's insane that this wasn't always publicly governed or like had public oversight and instead it's been you know what's her name lean in Samberg and Mark Zuckerberg a 20 year old Mark Zuckerberg being like oh yeah we can we we got to sort of control a bunch of like MBA sociopaths and some like kid in a hoodie determining like the most important information and technology decisions that could affect everything from democracy and inequality this is another actually very thoughtful critique that would the see is this the no this is a different Alex Jones one I'm sorry okay well no let's play this second let's play this second Zuckerberg clip then this is from 2009 right around the time that yeah he was like 24 25 Mark Zuckerberg talking with the BBC about the importance of privacy and how users quote unquote own their data on Facebook so who is going to own the Facebook content the person who puts it there or you the person who's putting the content on Facebook always owns the information and that's why this is such an important thing and and why Facebook is such a special service that people feel a lot of ownership / right this is their information they own it and they often want to know of course not I mean they want to share it with with only a few people right I might upload a photo album that I only want to share with a few members of my family or my friends from high school and you know it's really important that only that information only goes to those people and you know people feel a really strong sense of ownership over that which is why it was really important to say you know we trust our users and that's why we're gonna open up governance like this you say there's a contradiction between people wanting to share information online and wanting to control it why well I mean I think you know everyone wants to be able to see all the information that's out there and at the same time everyone wants to make sure that they're only sharing their information with the people who they want to see it so it's important that we design a system where people can do both so just to be clear you're not going to sell or share any of the information on Facebook what the term say is just we're not going to share people's information except for with the people that they've asked for it to be shared and you know everyone gets privacy settings which has always been one of the big different differentiators on Facebook and what's making what makes that a really different service for people is you can say you know I want this photo album to go to these people I want this note to go to these people and the privacy controls on Facebook are really unparalleled by anything else but how are you going to make money if you won't sell all share people's information the model is advertising right I mean people's information is their own but there are a lot of different companies and engineers that want to buy advertising to take the information that they have whatever their message is and reach more people with it you know so our advertising is growing really quickly just because the number of people are using Facebook around the world is growing quickly so it's interesting because the model of course still is advertising it's just in this economy in this world that's been opened up by platforms like Facebook the business of advertising is deep deep deep inside you know everybody's data and with each step of Facebook I mean they've they formally revoked these protections and I mean you know this is the this is the problem I mean you've built these private companies which are information Commons upon which the new economy is built and their privately controlled in a completely unaccountable way and just that I mean I'm not saying there is elemental but privatized water privatized roads I mean baseline services net neutrality privatized and not an open Common Spaces is disastrous and certainly the very least companies like Amazon Facebook Google Apple need to be broken up if not nationalized there's a one person who I think in their 20s I would trust to make these sorts of decisions and then gets Aaron Schwartz but records that it's a joke that you look at Mark Zuckerberg in that I mean Aaron Schwartz Aaron Schwartz face it Eric I was yeah okay yeah no I just want to make sure I knew who your but like you act a digital activists to committed suicide yeah committed suicide who you know basically founded RSS didn't found reddit or was no anyway look him up a transparency activist prosecuted in a terrifying way in Massachusetts for essentially attempting this sort of free academic information but but it's just it's just ludicrous that this that we expected Mark Zuckerberg gonna have the wisdom to be able to guide this like era in the disinterestedness and you know it's it's it's it's not I don't blame Mark Zuckerberg for all this this is us as a society this is what happens right this is society being like you know this kid who like can program and went to Harvard is absolutely because of our lone genius myth equipped to handle the political ethical social responsibilities of designing and implementing a company which is going to implicate everything from how we you know socialized to buy and elect our leaders it's delusional
