continue to tune in here for uh worship services on the weekend and we are blessed by your presence so thank you for joining us in worship just a few announcements first of all we have a new member class that started this weekend but you still have opportunity if you're interested in the new member class you can do so by contacting the church office to get a zoom invite to join us next weekend and so that would be important to do it this week also we have a devotional resource kit that's available to anyone who would like to use that in daily devotions in your home all you have to do is stop by the church office and you can pick up your copy of that also there will be many more things coming in the mail for our members here at st paul to to let you know of lenten services and those times but that's to come and so please watch your mailbox for a special uh postcard that will have a lot of information on it regarding our lenten season and our easter season again we're just so blessed to have you with us and just thank you so much uh for your support your prayer support your your tithing and offering support here for the ministry here at saint paul god has richly blessed us week all right hey [Applause] yes [Applause] my we worship this day in the name of the triune god in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven whose sin is covered blessed is the man against whom the lord counts no iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit as moses speaks to the people through god we confess those times we do not listen to your words and close our hearts to you forgive us lord as paul warns we confess those times when our freedom in christ causes one who is weak in faith to stumble forgive us lord as jesus the long-awaited prophet and savior taught with and showed his authority and power we confess those times when we allow the forces of evil to make us forget the deliverance and love of god we have in christ forgive us lord with david the psalmist we humbly come before the lord and we pause in a moment of silent reflection to ponder our sinfulness and to reflect on god's holiness i acknowledge my sin to you and i did not cover my iniquity i said i will confess my transgressions to the lord and you forgave the iniquity of my sin therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found surely in the rush of great waters they shall not reach him you are a hiding place for me you preserve me from trouble you surround me with shouts of deliverance almighty god our heavenly father has had mercy on us and has given us his only son to die for us and for his sake forgives us all our sins as a called and ordained servant of christ and by his authority i there forgive you all your sins all of them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit to those who believe in the name of his son he gives the power to become the children of god and has promised them his holy spirit may the lord who has begun this good work in us bring it to completion on the day of our lord jesus christ amen the lord be with you and also with you let us pray lord of all by your hands all things were made and your word is power over order and chaos light and darkness life and death grant your spirit that we become instruments of yours by your grace humbly serving you through the perfect prophet and savior of the world through jesus christ your son our lord who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit one god now and forever amen the old testament lesson for this day is taken from deuteronomy chapter 18. the lord your god will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you from your brothers it is to him you shall listen just as you desired of the lord your god at horeb on the day of the assembly when you said let me not hear again the voice of the lord my god or see this great fire any more lest i die and the lord said to me they are right in what they have spoken i will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers and i will put my words in his mouth and he shall speak to them all that i command him and whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name i myself will require it of him but the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that i have not commanded him to speak or who speaks in the name of other gods that same prophet shall die this is the word of the lord thanks be to god the second lesson our epistle reading is taken from first corinthians chapter eight concerning food offered to idols we know that all of us possess knowledge this knowledge puffs up but love builds up if anyone imagines that he knows something he does not yet know as he ought to know but if anyone loves god he is known by god therefore as to the eating of food offered to idols we know that an idol has no real existence and that there is no god but one for although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth as indeed there are many gods and many lords yet for us there is one god the father from whom are all things and for whom we exist and one lord jesus christ through whom are all things and through whom we exist however not all possess this knowledge but some through former association with idols eat food as really offered to an idol and their conscience being weak is defiled food will not commend us to god we are no worse off if we do not eat and know better off if we do but take care that this rite of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block of the week for if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple will he not be encouraged if his conscience is weak to eat food offered to idols and so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed the brother for whom christ died thus sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak you sin against christ therefore if food makes my brother stumble i will never eat meat lest i make my brother stumble this is the word of the lord thanks be to god we please rise in anticipation of the reading of the holy gospel and for our alleluia and verse alleluia they were astonished at his teaching for he taught as one who had authority alleluia the holy gospel according to saint mark the first chapter glory to you o lord they went into capernaum and immediately on the sabbath jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching and they were astonished at his teaching for he taught them as one who had authority and not as the scribes and immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit and he cried out what do you have to do with us jesus of nazareth have you come to destroy us i know who you are the holy one of god but jesus rebuked him saying be silent and come out of him and the unclean spirit convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice came out of him and they were all amazed so that they questioned among themselves saying who is this a new teaching with authority he commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him and at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of galilee this is the gospel of the lord praise to you o christ you may be seated as we join in confessing our faith together in the words of the apostles creed we confess i believe in god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of god the father almighty from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy christian church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting amen [Music] foreign foreign oh yes my foreign grace mercy and peace they are yours today they are gifts to you from god our father from our lord and savior jesus christ amen what does it take to amaze you one of my favorite things is a full moon on a clear winter's night and it just makes everything look like it's daylight or maybe there's some other marvels of god's creations that truly amaze you maybe it's the marvels of technology that amazes you i mean i'm still and i know this is old school i'm still amazed by a fax machine i know we don't use them anymore but just the fax machine will just always has blown my mind it has amazed me it's interesting that there are so many things that amaze us and what one person finds amazing someone else might find kind of boring and that's where our gospel lesson for today truly amazes us for it says there in the gospel lesson that the people were all so amazed everyone present when jesus cast out the demon everyone to a person was amazed not one of them saw that as being boring but they were all amazed amazed is found all over in the gospels over and over again we see amazement and the object of amazement in the gospels is always jesus because you see where jesus is it's amazing may we see today and know through the power of the holy spirit that where jesus is it's amazing our text is the gospel lesson but reading now from mark chapter 1 verses 21 and 22 jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach the people were amazed at his teaching because he taught them as one who had authority and not as the teachers of the law the teachings of jesus are amazing i mean jesus was like no other teacher they had ever had jesus was able to connect with the people in their personal lives he was able to to be practical with them he never was above them as a teacher but always was right on their level he spoke to them and cared for them as no one else ever did jesus himself told stories and planted images in the minds of the people so that they could remember his teaching he wasn't like any other rabbi because you see all the other rabbis had to quote other rabbis other teachers to make their point and even we have to do that as as pastors as as messengers of the gospel we too quote other people we quote luther augustine the early church fathers we quote corey ten boom max lucado and others i believe even last week pastor bauman in his ser sermon quoted snoopy we quote others to make our point jesus never did jesus spoke the word you see it was his teaching so he didn't have to quote anyone sure he quoted scripture but he never quoted anyone else and his message had authority and it amazed them jesus teaching is still amazing however there are many who have lost their amazement with his teaching we hear so many things that amaze us do we still see his teaching as being amazing let me ask you when was the last time you were wowed by the message of our savior jesus christ you see some 2000 years later and here with the words of jesus they are simply still amazing for us because you see they might be counter-cultural and they are things that jesus said kind of went against the grain he says in his word he says whoever wants to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it he says love your neighbor but he also says love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you that's countercultural or maybe he says you want to be great you want to be first that's super in order to do so you have to be servant of all jesus taught us that he was the good shepherd and he laid down his life for the sheep come to me all you who are weary and burdened and i will give you rest amazing look at the birds of the air they don't sow a reap or store away in barns and yet your heavenly father feeds them are you not much more valuable than they amazing his teachings are still amazing the teachings of jesus changes lives they change decisions the teachings of jesus even changes relationships taking people who were unknown to each other and making them the best of friends changes relationships you've seen jesus teachings impact other people you've seen his teachings impact you see his teachings are still amazing teachings that remind us and still communicate to us his amazing love teachings that still communicate the blessing of his amazing forgiveness teachings that communicate to us the promise of the resurrection and eternal life in his kingdom yes his teachings are still amazing jesus's actions are amazing i mean look in the gospel lesson he casts out that demon and what you have to see here is that this is no knock down drag out kind of tussle here jesus is the clear winner he simply speaks and says to the demon be quiet come out of him and he does amazing it's amazing what his actions do jesus performed all kinds of miracles during his earthly ministry to point to the fact that he was god in the flesh he is god in the flesh that's amazing in and of itself and that he the one who did such great things came into this world to save you and me how amazing indeed we see that in his amazing actions for us jesus lived a perfect life without sin he did the unthinkable the unimaginable it's simply amazing that he never once in thought word or deed sinned and jesus sacrificed himself laid down his life for us on the cross the innocent for the guilty so that the guilty would be innocent he did it for sheep who love to wander who like to continue in their sin he himself paid the debt that he didn't know he paid your debt and mine folks that's amazing that's incredible and it's there that jesus also reminds us in his resurrection his glorious resurrection the one who was absolutely dead three days dead rose again from the dead for us he is alive again and it is amazing it amazed the disciples then and it amazes us now we hear that in luke's gospel luke chapter 24 when he had said this he showed them his hands and feet and while they were still did not believe it because of joy and amazement he asked them do you have anything here to eat they were so amazed that he was alive and we too continue to be amazed has jesus stop being amazing think about that does jesus who died three days later rose who ascended into heaven who promises that he is with us always does he still walk among us and not do nothing much folks absolutely not because you see his word his teaching is still amazing it still has power for our lives does he still not act much in our lives absolutely not jesus is always doing amazing things for us in our lives because you see where jesus is there is forgiveness there is compassion there is strength there is comfort there is peace where jesus is there is salvation there is hope there is help there is joy where jesus is it's amazing and he's the one who promises to be with us always even here in worship as we gather around god's word and sacrament it's amazing because jesus is here he is here to touch our lives here to comfort us here to sustain us here to assure us of his promises here to be our joy and our peace always it's amazing even when we gather for worship because where jesus is it's amazing and where jesus is this amazing truth motivates us for mission did you see that or hear that in the gospel verse 28 of the text that says and at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of galilee because it was so amazing they couldn't help but speak about jesus and his amazing teachings and his amazing actions and how can we be any different to see and know the truth about our savior if you knew of a cure maybe you knew a cure for covid tell me you wouldn't tell someone about that if you knew a great truth that would change someone's life forever tell me you wouldn't tell that person or a person or a friend that good news you see this amazing jesus that changes lives motivates us to tell others to spread his fame throughout the region of stevens point and beyond what does it take to amaze you just look at jesus because where jesus is it is amazing to him be the glory forever and ever amen and now may the peace of god which surpasses all our human understanding that peace that amazes us keep our hearts and minds and true faith into christ jesus our lord and savior amen thank you pastor hulkie for sharing god's word with us on the authority of christ we continue at this time with the prayer of the church let us pray for the whole church of god in christ jesus and for all people according to their needs gracious lord we give you thanks for the gift of holy scriptures both law and gospel in which we see our sin and see your love in our savior as christ is true prophet and savior of this world give us faith to continue to hear his voice and find comfort in his work of salvation blessed we ask you the proclamation of the word and raise faithful servants who will share your commands and the forgiveness that comes through christ lord in your mercy hear our prayer ever giving lord grant continued faith by your holy spirit through the hearing of your word that we be fed and nourished produce in us good fruit for the sake of of selves and others that we not cause others to stumble but to walk firmly in your ways lord in your mercy hear our prayer all-powerful lord at whose word and authority even unclean and evil spirits submit and obey hinder the work of satan in our lives that your kingdom and victory may be known to all give your peace and presence to those who suffer in any affliction enable us to be a blessing to those in their time of need and hear those we bring before you on our hearts in a moment of silent prayer lord in your mercy hear our prayer into your hands o lord we command all for whom we pray trusting in your mercy through jesus christ our lord amen lord remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever amen receive the benediction the lord bless you and keep you the lord make his face to shine on you and be
