either everyone here on objectivity we show you lots of documents down in the Royal Society archives written in ink but we don't often talk about the ink and how they're written and things like that so Keith has gotten out some wonderful objects for us today including this amazing inkwell gorgeous case it's a beautiful thing this is a George the third period inkwell presented to the Royal Society in the late 18th century there's an inscription here we able to really yeah tell you what I'll lift it even if you read the inscription presented to the Royal Society of London for improving natural knowledge ad 1797 1797 was it used at the Royal Society it was indeed so if the President had an important document to sign this would be placed in front of the president and he really used this to sign beginning with Sir Joseph Banks I don't believe you Keith I need proof it's true here we have proof right behind you he is the portrait of banks the regalia of the royal society including the maces in front of him Allen there are the ink wells isn't that amazing you look at that old painting thinking are you no none of that stuff exists anymore yeah here it is and this thing still is placed in front of the president at Royal Society council meetings with the mace just in case he has that important document to cite one of the important things that people would have used this for would be to sign the Charter book no I'm sure that Brady in the fullness of time you may well be be asked to you know donate your signature to the Royal Society new fellows we always like to get them to practice a little bit before they actually sign the real thing okay so I thought it'd be quite a nice idea to get some practice vellum out and give it a go so everyone you have seen the Charter book before in numerous videos and as you know new fellow signer every year we have some previous practice runs here by people who were about to go in and do their signature I noticed we have the lake Patrick Moore there the you know the astronomer lots of famous scientists here a few TV stars on this one too there's Brian Cox's practice signature before he put his real one in the book that's right Marcus DeSoto as well the good signature that he has got a good signature and takes up a lot of room so normally these rehearsals are done Mia what hours or minutes before yup just just before the actual ceremony there are quite a lot of fellows to get through in in one day but today if Brady you can you can practice at your leisure and I'm doing my rehearsal quite a few years before the real moment in fact perhaps infinite years but I'm gonna have a try at signing my name with proper posh ink so here we go Brady you'd be requiring one of those of course to what do I wear this behind my yeah yeah but of course that's what people would have used in banks today and rather earlier maybe we should stick to the steel pens though which are more benign early 19th century invention okay and we have a very nice 19th century pen here is that legit is this a real old one it is yeah the nibs been changed but yeah the pen itself is is an oval I have absolutely no idea what to do so it's a dip pen a dip pen you need to dip it in the ink and and you all right straight away from that yep this is gonna be so bad right now of course most people would be writing on paper yeah if they were composing letters and you needed quite a bit of equipment to do that you would need to seal your letter with a bit of red sealing wax and you can see that in the bank's port right there you might even need one of these things so this is a little seal so you would seal this one of those and that's how you would create your letter we're not gonna be writing a letter today what you need is a bit of parchment to practice upon you're not gonna let me write on the practice piece a well I think you should this isn't paper this is animal skin so it's a little different to write on a little bit more difficult you can probably feel the way the skin runs in some of these that's quite a smooth piece there sometimes you can feel it slightly rougher this is a special ink or it's just non waterproof inks it's drawing ink you hold then it like this so you get a little reservoir of ink in the groove there's just hell there Bible is surface tension if they're pointy end is down you're good to go now I hold pens in a rather unusual way so I'm gonna try it well this will be an experiment this is good it is the raw Society yeah how that yeah is that too much right no that's fine so you need to turn it yeah here we go it's working I'm using my ol capitals writing here cooperating then five now that's one of the ways that are right all right okay that's not bad let us let her tribe official sing it let's try the full-on signature now alright here we go oh what a disaster no it's fine no that doesn't look like my signature at all that's why we practice how I didn't get my honey wink keep dipping it's perfectly fine you have to dip a lot you do oh you blot it yeah this is why we have the blotting paper Brady so if you just get a little strip of that loss away press down hard there we go ah that's terrible if that was how my signature turned out in the chatter book I would cry if you blot the Charter book or your you in trouble but in a way you know I have to have another Genki okay never know again people always did lot I mean if they're used to writing of course they've lot less but accidents happen you get ink spills on historical documents it's part of the character of what you're looking at I I think it's fine quite often these days we'll use a cartridge pen or a draw pen so that you know there's a reservoir that you pull ink up into it just makes people feel a little more comfortable but there are still on the day difficulties with the Pens some people prefer different styles of a nib for example so it's never easy you're getting worse bread you know better that actually looks more like my signature except for the blot do you know the thing that brings me undone is at the end of my signature I do at the end of my signature I do is little flourish like a lion yeah and whenever I do that that's when I'm blotting I'm gonna do one more yeah I do that too that's something we have in common let me do one more and this time when I do the flourish I'm be more careful I really enjoy this this is looking good I can't this is we're gonna be careful that's alright nothing wrong with that one but you can practice at home ready there's decades probably to
