chris sewell here baseball card collector investor dealer in that order welcome everyone question and answer day thank you to everyone for submitting questions there are a lot of good ones a bunch to get to so we're going to jump right in as always my apologies up front for anyone's name i mispronounce dustin pribble wrote have you ever seen a boom in sports cards like we've had in 2020 also opinion on investing in 1986 flir basketball and holding long term i have never seen anything like the 2020 card boom and not even close i loosely remember the late 80s and early 90s card boom but you know that happened over the course of many years five six seven years or whatever when the sports card hobby was sort of taking off but this all happened in basically a year you know cards 10xing in value for for no particular reason that's just just never seen that before on your second question i think the 1986 fleer basketball is about the best long-term investment product there is you know short-term who knows anything can happen but long term definitely the higher grade the better that set is just too important historically it's got the only rookie card of something like 10 of the top 50 players of all time in it including of course jordan that's a never going to happen again it will also never happen again where you know all-time great players have exactly one rookie card think of someone like lebron or zion or luca they've got hundreds of rookies whereas the 86 fleer you know hakeem barkley jordan drexler ewing malone you know that's the only one they've got william jukes asked do you ever think a newer grading service like gma will be established and accepted in the community since psa is so backlogged and bgs has its own issues i definitely think there is room for a new player or two and actually cgc has just entered the grading card market and seems to be making some initial headway which i think would be great for the hobby with gma specifically they may be able to and actually already sort of have carved out a small niche market share with the lower end cards and may continue to grow in that space but in the long term gma specifically won't ever be a major player because they don't maintain a pop report over time the pop report becomes more and more critical as it basically represents half of the supply and demand formula and without that info i just don't see gma ever becoming you know on the same level as the big three eagleman trading cards has been leaving a lot of great comments over the months on my channel asked will the card hobby turn into more of an investment platform rather than an actual collecting experience are people still in the hobby to collect any more good question i think this is clearly happening or or it's already happened but i don't think investing is replacing collecting i think it's adding to it which which i view is actually a very very good thing you know a lot of my videos focus on the the high end aspect of the hobby where there's probably a lot more investing being done than pure collecting but all signs point to you know the hobby being as strong as ever from a from a collecting standpoint at least since maybe the the early 90s or so if you ask the average card person in say 1985 or 2005 they they'd probably just say they were a collector but if you ask the average person today they might say they're a collector and an investor and i actually think that's great you know one of the really cool things about the hobby is that it's so many things wrapped in one it's a social activity it's a hobby you know but the cards are pieces of art or american history you know they have a lot of nostalgia there and now people are viewing them as as investments more than ever as well chris harner asks where can i buy packs of cards i've looked all over my town and and no one sells them anymore unfortunately this is a downside of the recent card boom is that car dealers are just going around to all the targets in the walmarts and just buying up all the the unopened product because the margins are just too juicy so it can be very difficult to find packs at the moment you can always buy online from ebay or amazon or other websites but you'll be paying paying above retail if there's a card store or card show in your area there should be you know current year wax there for a little cheaper than online but a lot of collectors are in your predicament just just not a lot not a lot of good options both of the previous two questions sort of lead into weekend roadies who wrote in your opinion has the hobby straight entirely from its roots and is no longer something children can participate in grown men grabbing blasters right out of the distributor's hands i'm not a dad yet but it feels like the hobby will be quite niche if it uh fails to be accessible to younger audiences so i touched on this a little bit in the last two questions uh you know card hobby is more and more of an investment platform than ever before and people snatching up all the retail boxes is a shame as it hurts you know kids accessibility to the hobby and anyone who wants long-term health for cards should want as many kids into the hobby and welcome as many kids into the hobby as possible but i also see something else which is the opportunity for kids to be involved in ways that i never had when i was a kid the hobby has basically moved mostly online at this point there are facebook groups reddit threads instagram accounts even you know tick tocks focusing on sports cards and kids can be involved just showcasing their collection being being involved in chat rooms watching youtube videos about cards maybe it's wishful thinking but i think this really provides access to the hobby for for kids and and adults who are new to the hobby as well in ways that just never happened before and will really help the the hobby grow i got two video question submissions which was uh very cool hey chris my name is will really appreciate the content you put on youtube my question for you is how are you able to research and find out the information for those high roller videos that you make i'm looking at doing something similar but focusing on on football cheers uh thank you for your your question well i use a variety of resources when i'm researching the high rollers and a bunch of my videos first off is just ebay completed sales if it's a best offer ebay won't let you see the actual price so i use a website called 130.com it's a free website you can you can plug in the the item listing and figure out what the the actual sale price of any any listing was for best offer uh when i'm comparing it to like past sales you know this is the highest sale the card since 2016 type of thing i'm using one of three websites usually my favorite is vintagecardprices.com sometimes known as vcp you can go back to like 2008 for for sales on on graded cards i also use market movers they're a really good site for looking at recent trends and terapeak that allows you to go back on ebay two years to see sales on ebay for the past two years and it also tells you if items have been paid for or not all three of these websites do cost money you need to to pay for a monthly subscription to to use them i'll include links to everything i just mentioned here in the in the description below hi chris cardman john here and my question is do you think there will be any long-term or lasting effect on the record books due to the extremely shortened 2020 season for an example my personal pc is peter alonso for the new york mets i was hoping that he would get a 30 home run year if not a 40 home run year in his sophomore season with the 60 game season he still was able to achieve 16 home runs which if you project that out that is as much as 36 home runs in a normal season that would have really helped his values but how do you feel this will extrapolate out into rbis uh strikeouts by pitchers things like that once again thank you and i do appreciate your content keep up the good work thank you carmen john that's a it's an interesting question it's i'm a big stat nerd i love stats especially baseball is there's just so many stats to to look at and analyze and yeah i think you know the the shortened season does hurt stats a little bit especially sort of like streaks type things you know consecutive years with 100 rbis well obviously nobody got 100 rbis in a 60 game season so a lot of streaks like that are you know will come to an end also for a player like pete alonso you know you're just sort of losing 100 games or so in the in the primary career so your career totals will end up being a little less than they would have been otherwise maybe he ends up with you know 25 home runs less than he would have that could could make a big difference or or maybe not but in the big picture i don't i don't think it's going to have a huge impact in 1981 and in 1994 the the seasons were strike shortened and same sort of issue but i mean those have sort of just been forgotten about and in the long run it really doesn't have much of an impact and i would sort of expect that to be the case with 2020 as well alvaro marquez asks are you still in the netherlands what sort of uh sports cards are sold there i am still in the netherlands we'll probably be here for another year or so uh unfortunately there's really just not much in the way of sports trading cards here you can get the current year panini soccer stickers but that's really really about it i did drive to a card show in belgium which was about an hour away or so there were maybe 10 collectors who had tables set up but it was really more for trading there wasn't really much buying and selling going on there was some decent stuff everyone was was super friendly but you know the inventory was pretty pretty limited i would say it was 75 modern basketball and and 25 soccer and no other sports at all matthew p asks if you were to rip affordable wax to get the best bang for your buck would you choose regular bowman tops flagship or tops chrome and why so i'm really not the the right person to answer this question i essentially never open wax and i'm you know really not up to date on on the hot prospects or or the hottest new insert uh but historically you know i tend to look at things in in a long term perspective and i would choose tops chrome they the refractors have just proven to be you know a key staple of the hobby both short term and and long term for for for decades now i mean imagine if mike trout had a 2011 tops chrome rookie with all the serial numbered refractors i mean the price of the the value of that card would just have no ceiling it would be like the the lebron chrome from 2003. nick rossetnick asked what is the difference between buying tops complete sets versus a hobby box is it just the inserts and parallels or is there something different about the base cards as well this has gotten extremely confusing over the years i mean the difference between hobby boxes retail boxes blaster boxes hanger boxes complete sets you know and it varies year to year so you really kind of have to you know check check the uh the box itself just to see what's included most of the time a complete set will just be one of every card from the base set whereas you know hobby boxes or retail boxes will have those exact same cards that you can pull out of packs obviously not guaranteed one of each but but you'll also be able to pull inserts and parallels as well but but again you really need to check the box to know exactly what's going on a really a really good resource for this is a cardboardconnection.com they sort of go through all this and list what's included in every type of box i included a link to their website in the description along the same lines gerardo garduno asked can you talk about the different type of boxes out there what's the difference between retail box or wax box and others again this is just something that's gotten extremely confusing over these i mean i i get confused with it with all the time the term wax box refers to is a general term and it just sort of refers to any any box or pack back in the day meaning you know decades ago now packs were sealed with hot wax hence the term you know wax box or wax pack a retail box refers to boxes that were distributed directly to retail stores such as target or walmart and hobby boxes refer to boxes that were distributed directly to dealers usually hobby boxes and retail boxes will have completely different inserts or you know odds of pulling inserts or parallels you sort of again have to check the box itself for or again go to a cardboardconnection.com gsr photo asked what's your or someone you know's wildest card find per yard sale or storage unit etc so i have a lot of crazy finds more from storage units than yard sales uh one i'll share here i'll actually make a video about this one at some point so i'll go into more details on it then but i i came across a storage unit that had approximately three million cards to uh give you a sense what three million cards look like imagine a one car garage 10 feet high filled with every single square inch filled in with with cards my partner and i actually ended up buying that you know we paid incredibly low for it just a few thousand dollars but it ended up being a complete bust a total waste of our time as it was essentially all junk wax era commons bobo 44 done milking wrote i pulled a 101 non-auto card riley green 2020 bowman next wave how many times more would it be worth if i could get riley to autograph the card since it's a one of one first of all congrats on that pull really cool card i would not recommend getting it autographed by riley most high-end collectors today only really want autographs from card manufacturers meaning it came out of the pack already autographed so you know getting this card autographed by riley would would not in my opinion be the way to go if you were if you were looking to sell it if you had the opportunity to get riley's autograph i would go for uh you know a cheaper card or some some sort of memorabilia chris rivers wrote i've got a number of factory sealed sets and i can't decide what to do with the key rookie cards in them is it better to leave the sets sealed or break them open and get the top cards graded so it very much depends on what sets you're talking about but in very general terms both options are perfectly reasonable if you're going to hold on to them long term as an investment i would recommend just leaving them sealed you can you can always you know crack them and grate them later and seal stuff tends to go up in value if you're looking to resell then like i said both options make sense if you open those open the sets and get the top cards graded you know that's the more of the gamble play high risk high reward you can get a bunch of tens and strike a big or you might get a bunch of sevens and eights and you're out a bunch of time and money that you're not going to make up um it's sort of a personal preference depends on your you know your level of risk i i tend to leave stuff sealed but i'm not not much of a risk taker when it comes to the hobby jeff larson asked beckett sent me an email advertising insurance for personal collectibles and i never thought about it do you insure your collection if so do you do it through homeowners renters third party etc i do ensure my collection i found that most homeowners and renters insurance policies won't cover collectibles so i use a company called american collectible insurance uh they're quite good as far as i can tell pretty expensive i've never had to make a claim with them so i don't i can't speak to you know how well they they handle that i saw the beckett thing too i'm actually probably going to switch them at some point you know depending on their their policy and the and the pricing um i like the fact that they're going to you know be sports cards first focusing on ensuring sports cards above all else the as far as i know they're the only company that that does that jrec asked any tips on selling on ebay so strategies on how to sell on ebay would take a whole series of videos to to go through i'll just share one pricing strategy here that as a tip price thing is a little bit higher than market value and accept offers down to about market value so if you have a card that's worth say twenty dollars listed for 25 and accept offers down to 20 or let's say 19. um that way you'll always get at least market value for your card and sometimes you'll get a little bit more than market value um if your card is just sitting in the store and it's just not selling you know lower the price 10 percent every every here and there and just repeat the process until eventually it's cheap enough that somebody somebody buys it daniel coyle writes in my few attempts to buy collections i have not been successful as people either have no clue what they have but they think it's priceless or they know the the value and expect to get the highest ebay prices for each card even though it's a bulk deal have you experienced this and how do you navigate those negotiations great question and yes this is extremely common i would say that more than half the deals i look at fall into one of the two categories here you're talking about most collectors greatly overvalue their collections especially if it's a a bulk collection i mean selling through bulk takes a ton of time and work and this has to be accounted for uh in the price usually in this situation there's you know not much to do other than to just simply pass i always stay polite and friendly and always offer to you know keep the door open if they ever change their mind what will often happen is they'll they'll you know i'll make an offer they'll find it extremely low and they'll pass but you know they'll keep my number because we were polite and had a good rapport and then you know a month later they called me because they had some other dealers come look at it and those dealers offered even less so you know i'll just say never close the door if you don't have to lucas antonelli writes what advice would you give for a kid in the hobby today always love to hear about kids in the hobby i mean at its core this is a hobby for kids as i've said it's sort of morphed into something else over the years but the more kids involved in the hobby the stronger it will remain uh what i would advise for kids or or new adults just getting into the hobby is to collect what you enjoy if you love hockey cards collect hockey cards if you love the 1997 minnesota vikings collect the 1997 minnesota vikings if you do this the other stuff will just sort of happen naturally i mean like knowledge of the hobby and the ability to make smart decisions you know for for investment purposes that that'll just sort of grow on its own if you force yourself to collect something you're really not not passionate about you know it's gonna it's gonna end up feeling more like a chore lucas magookas wrote any plans for a new video series on the channel and braavos journey asked a similar question any plans for 2021 new video ideas or more platform reviews i recently started posting some videos about some of my large or significant purchases those stories have been really fun to relive and and people seem to really enjoy them so i'm going to continue to post one every other week or so i have about 10 or so more that i think are good ones to share i really want to do a series about investing strategies i've been meaning to do it for a while but uh it's a very difficult one to sort of organize you know there's very different strategies for short-term investing medium-term investing long-term investing modern versus vintage so i just uh you know keep sort of putting it off but i'll definitely get to it at some point probably be like a four-part series or so um as for other videos i just sort of do whatever video i'm sort of inspired by in that week and as for 2021 you know i can't wait to start going to card shows again robert wyatt asked i see boxes labeled psa bgs and sgc do you submit cards to all three how do you determine which cards to send in for each i do use all three this would take at least an entire video to explain properly but in simplest terms i use psa the vast majority of the time i'll occasionally use beckett for higher end modern cards especially especially if they're autographed and i use sgc here and there for sort of lower to mid-level vintage star cards because of the crazy turnaround times at psa and beckett um i started using sgc a little bit more but psa is really still my go-to i mean their their resale value is just by far the highest of the three and and i'm a reseller so that's the the number one factor for me most of the time robert smith uh thank you robert for all the support and comments over the months he asked what was the thing moment where you decided i'm going to start my own youtube channel and upload my first video i don't think there was an exact moment it just sort of developed over time you know living in europe for a year before i moved to europe i was spending probably 40 to 60 hours a week on cars and that's not a complaint i loved every minute of it but when i got here there just wasn't that much to do i mean i don't have the majority of my cards with me there's no card shows or shops here and uh you know you can only browse ebay and comc for so many hours a day so i was maybe spending 10 to 20 hours a week on cards and you know i just i missed it so i came up with the idea for the youtube channel that sort of forced me to learn about new aspects of the hobby and you know do research on things and analyze the hobby in new ways and that was sort of the best idea i could come up with frankie jay asks i have a select 2019 black disco steph curry one of one waiting to get it back from psa if it's a gem in 10 how do you recommend selling it i have my own ebay account but i feel like it won't get enough exposure if i put it there for auction congrats on that card very cool i would definitely not recommend auctioning it on ebay for for the exact reason you just said unless you have a killer ebay account you're just not going to get the card enough exposure and you you won't get top dollar what i would recommend is listing in your store as a buy it now at a very very high price you know take offers see what sort of offers come in if it doesn't sell lower the price 10 percent and you know give it a couple weeks and just repeat this until eventually it's low enough for it where it does sell uh this could take a while and if you're looking to sell it faster you can always go with one of the auction houses heritage or golden or pwcc or probesteen or mile high whichever one you prefer jason rakovic asks do you think louis robert is going to be the next mike trout as in rookie cards worth a fortune so again i'm sort of the wrong person to ask about this as i really don't do a lot with prospects i've just found that over the years you know far more prospects don't pan out than do and since many of their card prices are so high out of the gate before they've ever accomplished anything there's just a lot of downside lewis robert could very well be the next all-time great player and his card prices shoot to the moon he could also be a total bust and his card prices plummet to zero probability wise he's most likely to be somewhere in the middle you know a solid career but not an all-time great he of course could you know reach mike trout level but but the odds would be against it owner omagan simply asks griffey or thomas love the question uh back when they were both in their primes in the 90s i was a bigger fan of frank thomas than it was of griffey but but i liked griffey as well you know today looking back on their career you'd have to say griffey probably had the the better overall career but you know they're both in the hall of fame so can't really go wrong either way the greenskeeper asked i was wondering what the best way would be to sort all of my comments is it best to sort by team or by player this is one where i'd say there's no right answer it's just a personal preference thing whatever whatever you'd like you know back when i was a pure collector i used to sort my comments by year and by brand no real reason other than that's the way i like to do it i used to always sort my start cards by player you know these are all my king griffey juniors these are all my tony gwen's no reason other than that's just the way i like to to view my collection it's you know a personal preference thing michael hendricks asked i was wondering if you had any tips on getting cards graded for the average collector it's so expensive and it seems like a gamble to just get a card back in an eight where the value doesn't even jump past the cost of getting it graded and shipped it's a great question and i'd say you're already on the right track it's very important to understand that the value of the card raw plus the the cost of shipping insurance and the grading fee all that added up has to be less than the value of the card now that it's graded for this for this to be worth it financially and this won't always happen i still have cards in my orders all the time that that i lose money on but think of it in terms of a bulk sense it's very difficult to predict the grade of a single card but let's say you submit 20 cards and 15 are winners and five are losers well that's actually a fine result you're still up overall and the more you submit the better you'll get at it the learning curve is actually quite steep the the first few orders you may you know have some losses but you'll quickly improve frederick nolt asked when looking at a hot new prospect how many cards of that player should one invest in and should it be with a certain product so i would say this if you're looking to invest in a player long term meaning you're you want to buy his card put in the closet and and see what happens in five years then i would recommend you know buying one big money card probably is top's chrome rookie or the panini prism rookie depending on the sport and uh you know depending on how much money you want to spend a refractor or a prism parallel perhaps an autograph and a gem mint grade the lower serial number and the higher the grade the better if you're looking to invest in them for the short term let's say for this upcoming season that i actually like buying large quantity of cheaper cards probably his base rookies from bowman tops tops chrome panini prism select donors donors donors optic uh the more quantity you have the more options you have and you can sort of react to the current environment if he has a you know a great game there's a small spike in his values you can sell a few here sell a few there maybe get some graded i like having a lot of options so i can react to what's going on james stevens wrote i have a large collection of sports cards and old books magazines dolls cereal boxes candy bars haven't touched this since 2013 i would like to sell everything what do you suggest i live in las vegas depending on how large the collection is i might know some dealers in l.a who would potentially be interested i included my email below in the description if you if you want to send me an email if you wanted to piece it out and sell things individually that's how you're going to make the most money ebay is going to probably be your best way to go but it's going to take probably a lot of time and research you know sort of depends on your personal situation if that's something you you want to invest in if you want to sell it all in one shot you can you can look to craigslist or facebook ads you won't get top dollar that way but you know you won't have to spend a lot of time and research on it hopefully hopefully can sell it all in one shot peter medeski asked a similar question i have a huge collection of baseball and hockey older nfl cfl and memorabilia i live in edmonton canada and would like suggestions for selling them where i can retain the greatest profit so like with the previous question if you're willing to put in the time and do the research then breaking it up and selling things on ebay is probably going to be the path that yields you the the highest profit ebay is really just still the best place for selling things like sets and and lots and and memorabilia but but it can be extremely uh time-consuming if you have some really nice singles then cumc is a really good option i did a video about them uh i included a link in the description below their fees are comparable to ebay but but there's a lot less work involved and it's just sort of much easier to manage and if you wanted to you know try to get it all sell it all in one shot then like the last question facebook ad or craigslist ad is probably going to be your best bet but this this will not yield uh top dollar by any means troy peterson asked is there a part of the market you feel has declined or fallen out of favor with collectors or is everything rising and anything that you've thought you know now that's stupid money for that card for the most part everything is basically rising i mean there are certain some categories of cards that you know like tops 2020 project for example that you know shot way up and then basically just collapsed but i can't really think of a category of card that's been sort of generally on the decline for a number of years now uh you know there's things like error cards there was a time in the like early 90s so we're talking three decades ago now where error cards were all the rage i mean today nobody really cares about error cards except for you know a couple famous ones but to answer your second question there are cards every week on the high rollers that i think to myself this is just stupid money for this card it usually involves you know unproven players as i said most unproven players will not pan out to be all-time great players so when their cards are are selling for all-time great prices you know before they've accomplished anything to me that's just a you know a purchase with tremendous downside jiren or guyron24 wrote i have a large michael jordan collection what are some inserts you would recommend or your personal favorites of jordan well jordan's a great guy to have a personal collection of at the moment uh just uh so many great cards off the top of my head i thought of a 1990 hoops uh sam vincent card with jordan in the foreground it's the only card ever to feature jordan uh not in his number 23 or 45 uniform there's a story around it how his jersey was misplaced just before game time and he only wore the number 12 in this one game ever the card is just a couple bucks i always thought his 1992 tops base card was pretty undervalued you know a few dollars for his first ever tops card or as 80s flare cards are probably good bets to rise in value over over over time if you think uh of them like early mantle cards you know his third year fleer can be had you know for a hundred dollars in near mint condition and if you want to go crazy my favorite insert title of all time is 1998 ex duncan go nuts it's a nice looking card pretty pretty pricey at this point uh jordan will run you you know low four figures ungraded jacob atwell wrote still interested to hear your thoughts on luca autographs do they hold the same value you think over time they will depreciate for those who don't know jacob's referring to a story that came out about a year and a half ago about how it appeared that luca doncic was using someone else to sign his cards for him uh he had you know multiple variations of his autograph that looked like they just came from completely different people and and uh there was a rumor that luca's mom was the one signing all his cards you know i read up on this quite a bit and there was some fairly solid evidence but ultimately nothing concrete you know certainly nothing proven or or no admissions and there hasn't really been a story about it in in over a year now or so so i would say unless that there is an admission by luca or or a lucca ghost signer i wouldn't expect it to impact values going forward lanny dante asked i have a complete set of 2012 tops heritage 63 mint coin cards they were difficult to obtain one per case these aren't listed in any price guide what do you think is a fair price to sell them very cool item not something you see very often i couldn't really find much on on how to price them either there were a couple completed sales on ebay recent sales paul o'neill but that was with a penny went for 16 joe morgan with a nickel went for 25 and the only one with a quarter that sold recently was yogi bear went for 45 dollars so i would sort of use that as your starting point for the mantle and maze i really don't know what to tell you i would i would list them in extremely high prices and just see see if you get any takers is essentially this is something you never see anymore they might even be worth getting graded as you could end up with something that's a you know a pop one and and and then you can ask even you know crazier prices for them tom abbott asked i am just getting back into collecting i have a couple of complete sets 74 77 and 78 should i try to sell these as a sets or should i break out the money cards and trade away the commons my cards are in decent shape first of all tom well welcome back to the hobby uh for your 70 sets if they're near mint or better let's say yeah it might be worth splitting up as you could potentially grade some of the the cards or sell some of the stars for for really high prices and you can make lots of the commons and sell them for decent prices that way if they're mid grade or let's say near mint or less then uh it's probably not worth your time to split them up as you'll you'll you may be able to squeeze a little bit more money by splitting them up but it's going to take a whole bunch of time and you know selling through commons trading away commons is a difficult task so in that case i would just sell them as complete sets adam rasmussen asked how are magic johnson futures looking i've been looking around upcoming sports documentaries since the last few made the market go crazy uh mj and tiger and there is a doc coming out uh on him this year thoughts on how the market reacts so this is something i follow really closely mainly because i'm really not sure and i'm very curious you know the the last dance documentary set jordan cards ablaze in ways we've just never seen before and then you know tiger woods cards took off but that was actually before his documentary came out sort of people were anticipating that his documentary would do the same thing that that it did for for jordan uh so you know curious to see as you mentioned both magic johnson and tom brady have documentaries coming out in 2021 i imagine that at the least we'll see some sort of short-term price increase a lot of it will have to do you know with how flattering the documentary is towards them and how good it is i mean if the documentary is very boring or doesn't paint them in the best light it probably won't have much long-term impact tampa home investors llc always leaves a lot of a lot of smart comments asked do you have a card or product that you look back on now and wish you could have uh back or never sold looking back what would you have done different or change if you could go back and start from the beginning so at some point when you're a dealer you know i've just owned and sold so many cards that uh i don't i don't think in these terms anymore i mean for every card that i've sold that you know shot way up in value and in hindsight i should have held there's just as many that have shot shot way down and it sort of balances out and it's really difficult to know which is going to be which and you can't hold everything you know otherwise you can't make a living i did a video recently about how i sold some steph curry tops rookies for super cheap and you know now they're worth thousands and and i could come up with literally hundreds and hundreds of such examples i had jordan rookies and lebron rookies chrome rookies that are you know 10 times the value now but but i just don't really think in hindsight terms you just can't as a dealer for what i would have done differently i think you mean in terms of like my card dealing profession and uh for that i would have just started sooner you know you know i was bouncing around careers trying to figure out what i wanted to be and cards was right there in front of my face the whole time i just couldn't really see it i really wish i had started my card career at age you know 20 instead of age 32 or whatever it was melvin leong has an interesting one regarding the jordan pippen 1996 skybox premium thunder and lightning how do i grade it since there are two cards one inside the other would you expect them to leave the pippin inside and grade the jordan card so i looked into this and i couldn't find a perfect answer for you although i did find some stuff psa has never graded a copy of the card in in the set so i assume their policy is they just don't grade the the card ever beckon has graded a few times uh but the pop report is extremely messy and confusing i couldn't really make sense of it um i did find the jordan in a bgs holder it's just the outer card so no inner pippin card so i assume you can grade them separately with beckett and sgc i found this one a graded copy with the pippin card still inside so with sgc i guess you can get it graded combined as a single card three grading companies you know three different policies it appears matt f asked how do i look up psa pop reports for autographed cards that are not only graded psa 10 but also have a psa dna certified auto grade of a 10. for example i have a psa 10 1984 flair update dwight gooden that is also autographed and graded a psa dna 10. another one i'm not 100 sure on but as i understand it if you have a card that's created by both psa and psa dna it goes on both pop reports it goes on the psa pop report and and the dna pop report the goodin is a psa pop 169 and it goes on the dna pop count which is a a pop seven uh but i don't know that there's any way to know how many you know 10 10 combos there are all we know for sure is that it's seven or less and i would have certainly assume it's less i mean there's got to be some psa sevens with a 10 auto type type thing out there really cool card you have i mean in theory it could be the single best white gooden card on the planet that might sound extreme to say but it's it's his best card and the best possible grade and it's autographed with the best possible autograph grade and you know it's a pop of seven or less it could very well be the only 1010 combo in existence tom kilgore asked how do you keep track of certain cards you have do you document certain cards how do you decide if you're gonna send a card in for grading is there an easy way to check lots of cards current values ebay sales take for forever to look up individually so i personally do not track or document cards that i own unless it's a large purchase that i want to keep the financials on for my records or uh if it's a deal i made with a partner or on consignment but but otherwise i don't really document cards so i actually you know find it very time consuming not not particularly fun and not even particularly useful uh when i get a large collection in i immediately separate it into various categories and because i'm a reseller my categories are probably you know different than others but uh you can see some of them here like you know four lots these are cards that are going to be used to make lots on ebay comc these are cards to be shipped to comc these are cards ready to be shipped to the grading companies to be graded are cards that you know i need to go through later with a fine tooth comb to see if they're worthy of being sent for grading investment these are long-term holds that i think have the potential to to go up in value in the long run and there's there's a couple other categories as well as for pricing i mean ebay really is probably the fastest and the best that you can pay for some online services such as like beckett online they have an online price guide you can certainly go faster with beckett but it's a price guide i don't trust their their pricing uh you could pay for things like vintage card prices and market movers as i mentioned earlier and they have just tons of great sales data but it's not going to it's not going to be more efficient in terms of looking at sales than ebay jim dinardo asks should we be going after unlicensed panini major league baseball stuff he uses louis robert mosaic silver as an example of a way to invest in robert without without breaking the bank if you're talking about the short term or the medium term like this season or the next couple seasons then yeah yeah i like i like your thinking you know the percentage gains or or losses on a panini robert a cheaper panini robber should roughly be equivalent to you know on the more expensive tops chrome in the short term uh but you've already alluded to in your question but if you're talking about the long term then i would not recommend investing in panini baseball unlicensed product just you know has never sat well with collectors in the long run at least it never has in the past like i guess it's possible things change and attitudes shift but uh i would i would bet against that brent walker asked now we get to see what 2021 has in store for us could this insanity continue and craig see asked a similar question what do you think the next year plus in the hobby is going to look like i feel a correction is necessary to avoid a bubble burst in the current climate so after the craziness of 2020 i am less sure than ever you know i've seen points made that suggest a major crashes coming any day now and and those made perfect sense and i've seen articles written about how we're just at the beginning you know we've just gotten started and those made a lot of great points as well so i basically just consider myself you know a passenger along for the ride at this point if i had to guess i would i would predict there's got to be some sort of correction at some point maybe you know we sort of saw the beginning of one in like august september or so but but that didn't really stick you know i i would imagine there's going to be one this year maybe who knows but i i do think that the hobby has really built an incredibly strong foundation over the last year and i think that's really important for the the health of the hobby in the long run secoro32 wrote what is your favorite card that you pulled from a pack i pulled a ken griffey jr upper deck from a pack in the back of my buddy's car his mom was driving of course because i was a kid love love your story about the griffey that's a really cool memory so i really don't have a good pack pulling story believe it or not i was obsessed with opening packs in in the 90s i'm sure i pulled some good stuff here and there but really nothing that that sticks out i just found at some point it was better to put my money in singles and lots and i really haven't opened you know any packs of at all in the last 20 years or so i've told the story a couple times but i do still own a card i pulled out of the very first pack i ever got it was a 1988 donors mark mcguire and it was all the way back in 1988. i still own that exact card you can see you can see it here it's maybe a psa three quality might fetch you know 10 cents on the open market big smooth rights how is your trading card business going to change when you move back to the us will you still be going uh to buy out old collections and ricardo carnelis asked a similar question when you return to the states do you plan on opening a store or to just stay virtual with your business do you think the loss of the local card store is leaving a generation behind or does the virtual world make up for it so i don't anticipate much change in my business when i go back to the sl i'll continue to you know look for for private collections to buy but those are the most fun and sometimes come with you know hidden hidden treasures but i've been told by a lot of dealers that the opportunity for buying private collections has really been drying up lately especially because of the the 2020 price boom uh but i'll i'll get my ebay store back and running to full capacity it's open now but it's you know at a small fraction of its capacity i don't anticipate ever owning a a brick and mortar store i agree with you i love the local card stores i miss them sometimes and i think they're good for the hobby but you know overhead is killer and and for better for worse i think the the hobby has moved online you know the online experience has replaced the local card store adequately like i said for for better for worse um i'll continue to go to all the major shows and do a lot of business that way that's really my my favorite part of the hobby demolition z27 asked what do you think makes a certain card or player so desirable i ask because there are so many hall of famers that don't see the popularity as unproven players in today's market a great question this would probably take a couple of videos to explain in full but in simplest terms you know active players it's just a a lot more exciting to follow you can you can watch them on a day-to-day basis uh their futures are unknown you know it's sort of a gambling aspect to it what if he has a great season you know and his card prices spike up real high you know it's just a lot sexier than retired players who aren't in the news very often uh when people first enter the hobby they're usually big sports fans and they their their first instinct is they want to collect you know players they're watching every day this is how i started off in the hobby when collectors have been in the hobby a long time that's when they start to sort of gravitate towards vintage and retired players and you know where the price swings are much less but the long-term value is more solid and secure again that's exactly what would happen to me but if you step back and look at the the hobby as a whole you know there's just just a lot more people interested in in following active players and collecting active players simon wilson wrote do the tops chrome basin or fractal cards go green always most of the kobe rookie cards from that set seem to be hulked out robert kremen's asked a question on the same topic going forward how will this impact the value of those cards green and ghosted out or or will it at all maybe 10 to 15 percent less so i wouldn't say they all turned green but yeah this is a big problem that sort of popped up over the the last few years the early finest and chrome cards turning green which can can really detract from the presentation of the card i don't know a lot about actually robert in your question i think you probably know more than me if uh tops corrected the issue after the 1996 set you know i would i would certainly hope that they did i have to imagine this will have quite a quite a big impact on card prices moving forward i mean especially if they don't all turn green if only some of them do then the ones that don't will be more rare and and should go up in value whereas the ones that do turn green will probably fall and if it turns out that they all turn green then i would imagine this would you know hurt prices as well i mean i'd much rather have a kobe rookie from a different brand than a tops chrome ghosted out version and i imagine a lot of collectors would feel the same building builder sip asked is it safe to assume that the psa cards that are graded eights and nines are undervalued due to mass cracking and regrading i can only assume that the pricing spreads between eights nines and tens shouldn't be so far apart prices of twos threes and fours are usually lumped together interesting i hadn't really considered that but it's a good point the pop counts on eights and nines is probably a little over inflated because of uh cracked cases being cracked and regret attempts but in the past the spread between eights nines and tens has been getting greater and greater and greater and with uh psa getting stricter and stricter on their grading standards i actually see this getting getting more extreme graded values usually follow an exponential curve which is why twos threes and fours are often fairly close but when you get to the top you know it shoots way way up i do think if tens continue to explode in value nines and eights obviously will rise as well as it's the next best option for you know many collectors who simply cannot afford tens and finally a bunch of you asked about my favorite cards uh koi ma asked what's your favorite card in your collection brentfain asked what's your favorite single baseball card of all time and favorite set baskets resale asked what are your top five favorite cards of all time coolstaying1968 asked what one card would you like to own and never sell david bruno said is there a grail out there you wish to own if so why i love how diverse everyone's personal grails are same here i i love that as well and midnight mcphee asked do you have a specific player that you have collected a lot of so i grew up a massive calvin fan i always collected him at one point i just had a massive bulk collection of calvin's just a insane quantity but i i don't really collect him in bulk anymore just sort of focus on his top cards in the top condition my collection is probably about 60 vintage 20 cal ripken and 20 other modern so it's heavy vintage but probably most of my favorite cards would be uh calripping cards i don't know that i could come up with one or five but i'll just mention a few uh here that come to mind 1992 donric elite signature series i have a psa 10 that's his first autographed card and one of the first pack inserted autograph cards ever i i love the 1996 pinnacle skyline maybe my maybe my favorite card design that i can think of i have as a 93 fineness refractor and a psa 10. i gotta check if that's been greened out i have uh three of his minor league cards from 1980 and 1981 but the the holy grail card for me that i have never owned is his 1980 wb tv charlotte orioles minor league card the uh the orange version i've never owned one and they are just impossible to find nowadays there are none on ebay at the moment and there hasn't been one on ebay in over six months to give you a sense of how rare it is so that's it thank you everyone for submitting questions a lot of really fun ones i hope i answered your question in full if anyone feels i didn't or if you have follow-up questions or thoughts you know feel free to leave comments below as always on monday i'll post a adventures in card dealing story about a purchase of a complete t206 set so until then have a great weekend thanks guys
