Send spectator mark

all right I bought this pair of McCallister's allen edmonds McCallister's on ebay for $30 and as you can see they're not in horrible condition I've got a bit of a bit of wear to them looks like somebody put a set of soul savers on them all this is gonna get replaced I plan on sending these over to Steve with Beto's leather in Falls Church Virginia having put a pair of junior soles and heels on here so my plan with these is to take these McCallister's and turn them into a pair of broad streets which are spectator shoes and as you can see right down here we've got a bit of a tear I'm going to go ahead and repair that gonna strip the whole shoes and stripped all of everything down do the repair on there sand everything out going to read I the cap the toe box the cap right in here all of this is going to get done in either a saddle tan or a whiskey or something along those done bourbon that's the term I was looking for that's going to get done and along with this back piece and then this portion and all around here is going to get done in a nice clean color so next step is going to be to strip the scent to strip them down go ahead and do that repair there and we'll get back with you as soon as we're done with that okay so what I'm doing here is just going in and masking off and I use short little sections masking tape and masking off the welt on these McCallister's in preparation for dyeing the parts may use a screwdriver to kind of help press down that masking tape I definitely don't want the gonna die and getting up underneath there because I don't really want to die the the welt so as you can see I've already done the other side doesn't suck way up underneath there I'm a little bottle it's up here as a prop see I'm working this tape in as far back underneath there as I can so they get a nice clean edge on here when I go to dye this and when I go to paint the cream color on here to get that cream color on my welt or the souls so I'm just going in put a masking tape on pressing it in a little well those short sections there's one of those jobs if you like to obsess over your shoes and you like to play with them all the time you can sit here and you can fondle your shoes all you want so all I have left now is this one little section from about right here on around I had a couple of guys on Facebook group asking me you know do you do though do you do the white first or do you do the brown first and the key to it is you do the brown first you don't want to get brown all over your fresh white or cream and wreck a supreme color they had one guy asked already he says what's all the blue stuff along there's a masking tape why you putting masking tape on that's because I don't want to get stuff all over my shoes this is all I like to live dangerously and he shows me a pair of purple shoes that he did well good Purple's not my color for shoes but I look good he said he did those without without asking him off I wouldn't take that chance bear with me just a minute look about four more inches of three four more inches worth of masking to do here you can get on to to dine these because as you can see I've already sanded I've already sanded the uppers out on here you that already stripped the shoes down using acetone I think that was in the other video when I did beginning part of year it's been a couple of days since since I shot the first part of this video and I think I showed that and if I didn't okay I'll mention it again yes I stripped the shoes down with acetone so all the finish has gone off of them when I came back with some 800 grit wet dry paper and just stuff sanded everything as you can see I got a little repair right there did that filled that in with a little bit of bar glue there's some leather dust and then sanded that out I mean you know for 30 bucks for these shoes on eBay and a brand-new pair of broad streets well I don't even think Allen Edmonds is making broad streets anymore but for a brand new pair of broad streets I mean they're going upwards oh they went upwards of 400 bucks for a pair I got 30 bucks in these $10 shipping so $40 item in these and then whatever it's gonna cost to have Steve with Beto's leather works put on some junior soles and heels on the issues I think I'm gonna end up with a pair of shoes or even better than the originals because I know that the Broad streets did not come from the factory though jr. healed these holes it should be one more piece to go on here we can get busy busy dianese so I'm glad to see that there were so many guys that liked the first shoe the after of this actually I did one shoe first just to make sure I could do this I want to get all invested with doing all this labor on it too and here I come out looking terrible there's been a lot of interest in you know how I went about doing this guy's saying oh you should do a video well I planned on doing a video from the get-go now I'm using on this the feedings saddle tan Pro dye and let's see here first thing I want to do is I want to cut in so the part that's gonna get done on here is this piece the toe cap along with the wing see that's the vamp forgive me I forget my terminology here but anyway this part here comes all the way around and then the the back so I'm first thing I want to do will start cutting in underneath here with the brush since my Dawber for doing the my daughter will not get down that tight and I give this about three coats it's not gonna get any darker with with progressive coats but it will even out like I said the first thing I do is I start coming in underneath here and getting in all the spots that I can't get with the dauber and the reason why you do the reason why you do the brown first is because if I happen to get brown on the part that gets white it's no big deal I can always paint over it but if I get white on the part that's brown it's hard to get that back off and we'll use the brush and get right up to the line here and since since this piece of leather sticks up a little higher than this part that's gonna be white you don't really have to worry too much about giving Brown on there but you chances your chances of going over on it and pretty slim just have a nice even coverage so we're gonna go over this a few times it's gonna get really really dark and then we're gonna let this set overnight before I start doing anything more with it like that that dye really dry and another guy asked me about using shoe creams and conditioners for the leather especially after using the Angelus leather paints on here and to tell you the truth you know I'm man I'm only into these shoes for what 40 bucks well if they if to me if they wear out prematurely I don't really care because I'm not really invested heavily in them we have a lot of money tied up in I mean I think these shoes will still last at least another 10 15 years even without getting conditioner on just the white portions of it and $40 for a pair of shoes for this pair of shoes yes cheap and if they do wear out prematurely after I just make another pair I really care way down deep inside of there don't know if you can see that at that angle there Bay down deep inside you're gonna do the same thing when we go to do the the white we're gonna do the same thing way in there you got to have lots of patience to do this and my hand isn't exactly the steadiest and maybe in a shake almost as much as Steve does maybe more under normal conditions my hands probably shake more than Steve then maybe my hands just shaking the right just in the right places and just at the right time and write down as close into there as possible this is why we use masking tape on here to Marlys his die all over the place I'm gonna tell you we'll live once what's up with the finish on top of this the final finish on on top of this die it's gonna come out looking like a million bucks alright so we got that so far now we're gonna switch over to a dollar the wool dollar and we'll get the big areas again we're gonna give this since these shoes are your dive before I want this to be about as even as I possibly can and I want to give it up three coats again I mean you can get pretty close to that edge with the door as well as again you know we're gonna be coming up on that edge from the other direction with that acrylic paint you see how dry these shoes are I mean they just soaking up that dye typically when I go to dye dye my leather goes into a fair amount of leather other leather stuff as well I'll go over it two or three times until that leather so it stays wet so that dye stays wet all the time give a wet wet slick on there and then when that dries out I know that everything isn't it's got a good good coverage another neat little trick on or another trick on here is that we need you get your daughter loaded up with wood I'd like that start off further back and then kind of sneak up on that edge because if it's the dauber is too wet it can lead over into other spots that you don't want to get dye on it we got that side and come back to that we'll give it one more coat meantime we'll come back over to this side give this one more coat that should be enough to get it to lay down down a wet doesn't want that guy to go completely into that ladder when it dries it's not gonna be anywhere near this dark you know when I go to put a finish over the top of it it's not gonna be anywhere near this dark tool box being one more coat over here on this side like I said multiple coats of this won't turn it darker we'll just even it out so that's the toe box when you come back you will see on the next cutaway you should see that this will be done this section and all of this and this will be done will be ready to go on to the next section which is going to be doing a base coat for the white on here with a cream color our base color is going to be white and we will be using the Angeles flat white acrylic paint and then for our top coat we'll be using the Angeles cream acrylic cream acrylic paint so see you in a bit as Steve would say let let's continue okay so it's the following morning and getting ready to start with doing the flat white base coat on these and yesterday they're all the the the brush I was using before was this one which I did the first shoe with with this one didn't particularly care for it it was a little bit tedious with to the art store yesterday and I picked up a scent this is what you want kind of a soft bristle brush angled so that you can actually get down in between the painting on the shoes so the this is the next day and the shoes have the the die has dried on here now I've got an old full table brush it's also a horse here I'm just gonna brush them down right quick with any residual powder or anything like that from the die there's a die kind of powders up get that off of here okay and now it's ready to start with the base coat of weight so the key to this let's go in layers very very thin layers you start by cutting in underneath you want to get underneath the pinking some of the painting is gonna lay down right smack up against the other leather and that's where that you know the bottom leather and that's where that angled brush comes in because you can actually get in into it and pull away and like I'd said before you want to if you're getting up tight up and close with this you want to start off back here further back to get that main glob of paint to keep it from from bleeding over into anything else and if you got brushstrokes in it you want to take your time to actually work those brush strokes out work them into the next you know spread them out don't worry about covering over the stitches it's all fine like I said you want to go up underneath the pinking or around the painting I said like right there there's a little bit of a brushstroke you know so you can work those brush strokes out so they will dry with a little bit of a high spot on it around the entire area everything that's gonna be done that color you didn't you're gonna just easily work up this is where I say it's it's a fun project for you guys that like to obsess over your shoes and we're gonna go one coat one coat of the flat white as a primer you're gonna closer you get in on this the better the end result will look work out those brushstrokes work out any dollops of paint that happened to be there and we're gonna continue on with this until the until all of the everything is white and when I and when we come back we'll be ready to start laying down the cream color the first coat of cream so we'll be back alright so one thing I neglected to mention is that especially on these shoes with broguing right here inside the broken the larger holes inside the burglaring you're gonna have to take some of this white paint and get down inside of there you got to be real careful that you don't get it on the pinking we're not gonna do this with the with the clean color because all we really need is the illusion that it's the but it's the same color doesn't have to be doesn't have to be precise all you're really looking to do is just like I said make the illusion that it's white underneath there as you can see from the rest of these I went ahead and I did that and you just take your time and I'll put a little dab a paint and if you got a little bit of a glob on the exterior you just take and smooth it out and again you're gonna go around each and every one of these holes smooth out any brushstrokes that happen to be there any little globs of paint that happen to get on the top and for that you probably well you're not going to be able to do that with a with that angled brush so you need something with a pretty good point on it like this one that I'm using here pointed brush one more last little bun to catch right underneath there not like anyone's ever gonna go looking at your shoes this close but anyway so you got to make sure you do that and then once you've got that then we can go back to using the angle brush as well finish cutting in around the pinky like I said don't worry about going over the stitches who's my shaking this morning more time you take this step getting around the painting the better the end results are gonna be so I'm gonna cut all that in all the way around the shoe and then I'm gonna switch out to a little bit larger brush so that I can you know do this a little bit faster cuz this takes forever okay we'll be back okay as you can see all of the base coat of the flat white is laid down next step I'm gonna do is I'm actually going to do the varnish or patina on the toe cap and so that I am using the fiebing's show Brown pro dye I try to use the pro guide whenever possible if you look up there you'll see it got a whole bunch of other dyes and neat's-foot oil and finishes and everything but we're going to do this with a with an airbrush forgive me if the compressor kicks on whoa [Music] [Music] for us when we go off in just a moment [Applause] all right so burnish is down on it now we're gonna go back to laying down paint you see the reason why I did the burnish first is because as you can see right in here there's a little bit of overspray and I wanted to make it absolutely certain but I don't get overspray on my top coat so we'll go back to our brush where it's dry wash it out this is acrylic paint it washes out with water and I know I've said this before I'll say it again but the key to this is very very light thin coats and the first coat on there as you can see very very blotchy very spotty don't worry about that don't worry about it if your second coat is splotchy and blotchy again your main concern here is very very light even coats working out the brushstrokes in it a little piece of trash or something ma usually tip you brush them use your finger but doesn't want to come out but doesn't want to come out anybody obsessing over my shoes that much has problem and one of the nice things about this pinking is that in a lot of cases the pinking itself is raised up just enough that if you use on a really fine brush like this you can actually work a tip of the brush right smack underneath the pinking in which case the cut in for for doing that is a lot easier again work out those brush strokes don't worry about it if it's blocky don't worry about it if you if it's uneven we're not looking to do this all in one shot I'm looking to do this over the course of three four maybe even five coats if necessary work out those brushstrokes if you work those brushstrokes out and you do multiple thin layers you'll actually still see the grain of the leather that Telegraph's through the finish and it'll look like this was dyed this way from the factory I don't know if we can get a close-up of what I'm doing here but you can actually you can see that the tip of that brush is going underneath the pinking work that those brush strokes out we'll continue that all the way on around when you're doing that when you're doing the part where the pinking with it where your white is over the top of the brown where it sets proud of it it's really simple kind of work up to it and you work off of the of the piece you don't have to worry about trying to get each and every one of those you know painting each and every one of those like that just work off now your small holes here on the brogan if you fill in with a little bit of paint just take the tip of that and then just kind of DAB it and it'll pop that that paint bubbled and when the paint dries it'll shrink down and it'll again it'll look like it's like it's normal like that's the way it came from the factory you just work your way around one side of the shoe don't put too much paint on you don't try to do too much at one time don't try to put too much paint on your brush at one time this is a marathon it's not a sprint so you want to go real slow with this slow and steady wins the race on this game even though your brushstrokes now what I find the hardest part to get even with this brush is right in here this section right in here because it's so narrow the brush is a little wide you might want to switch to a smaller brush or even if you got a smaller one than that that you can that you can work in there for me that's the hardest section of the whole shoe to get once I'm done with this one little section I'll show you another little trick if the pinking isn't quite high enough that you can work your brush underneath there's another little trick again sneak up on sneak up on that edge when you got a fully loaded brush like that I'm gonna catch this one little bit now show you a little trick up here come in at an angle use the tip of that brush all the way back down into that that corner underneath the pinky go ahead and paint your stitching as well now I'm doing this with a set of shoe trees in these shoes which helps to keep everything straight it also sometimes you might need to rest your pinky on something to stay steady your hand but if you find again that the pinking won't come up take the shoe tree out and what you can do you grab it read it right there on the edge and kind of roll and what it'll do is it lifts that painting up lift that leather edge up again sneak up on it anyway regardless even if you can do that and then you're gonna paint right up underneath there smooth out your brushstrokes and you just work your way around the entire shoe pretty simple it's a very very simple process and again you're not trum you're not trying to do this all at once I cannot stress that enough if you load up the brush and you just try to get get coverage on this all in one shot you'll end up with a mess I mean it's we turn into an awful mess there's plenty of other videos here on YouTube of people that are attempting to paint their shoes with and they're using the right materials they're using the right brushes or at least most of them are they're using a decent decent enough brushes that they should be able to get the job done pretty nicely but they think that they're gonna get this done in one pass with the paint you can't do that one pass is just not gonna cut it and smooth those brush strokes out with any little globs of paint okay stop the video here when we come back the first coat of this will be done and we'll get on to the second coat okay so first coat is done and as you can see it comes out a little bit better still splotchy don't worry about that again this is going to take mm-hmm could take anywhere between four and five coats but in just a second you'll see that with each coat it progressively gets better and better the paint dries a little bit lighter I'm sorry a little bit darker then when you first put it on and again the key to this is multiple coats multiple thin coats and by about the third coat on here you should start to see some some really decent coverage you shouldn't be able to see hardly anything you might see a little bit of a little bit of brown in the background ci and we have a little bit of brown right in here in the background not much in three coats will get you there but you know just to be on the safe side I like to go for if you're putting this on really thin and you might have to do as many as five make sure you get the brushstrokes out and then and by the way this paint about actually dry and start setting up pretty quickly once you've you know especially with these really thin coats like this start setting up pretty quickly but what I like to do is go give it one good coat over the whole shoe where I'm where I'm working on everything that I'm painting give it one good coat and then let it wait let it sit for about 15 minutes or so and then it's ready for the next coat so the painting process on this is definitely something you could do in a weekend again I'm careful to get rid of all of those brush strokes in it because I don't want I don't want that to show up tiny amounts of paint little bitty little bitty amounts of paint sneak up on my dash and then pull back kind of fast and even it out don't be afraid to over your shoe around you're right-handed like me you know maneuver the shoe around any kind of way you can't so that you're working right to left this I'm gonna be trying to paint like this with your with your hand in the way new ver the shoe around and that second coat is getting a little bit better coverage finish up this one little this one edge all the way around on here like I did on this well didn't do this side yet I'll finish up this one edge then we'll stop the video and when we come back well when we come back it'll have a full second coat done and we can get on to the third coat and then after the fourth coat we're going to go ahead and do a coat of Reza's lien oh if I uh I've said that yet but we're gonna use feedings Reza leaned as a top coat finish for all of the for the whole shoe and we're gonna go over the top of that the acrylic we're gonna go over the top of the dyed portion and everything with that Reza lien and we'll let the rezulin dry for 30 minutes 30 minutes to an hour well unmask everything since that resolume is dried we'll go ahead and unmask everything and then we can get on to polishing it out but like I said I mean as you can tell even though this is kind of tedious it is still definitely a project that anyone should be able to tackle them in a weekend and then once you've got your first coat and see right here on the pinking up here once you got that first coat on there you don't have to bother doing it again you know from the factory the the the white portion of the shoe is it's dyed completely through the whole shoe is completely dyed through but they don't go back in and actually finish out those edges so you know the the leather that they're using is gonna be a solid color all the way through it's not going to be finished on that edge but it's at least gonna be a solid color so you know you're reproducing that so the first coat that you give on it is going to be enough to reproduce a close proximity a close approximation of what the what the factory did so you don't have to go back and do several coats and do all four coats on that that edge right along in here and right along on this side so okay when we come back the second coat will be done and we'll get onto the third coat see you in a bit alright we're back sorry about the portrait mode before we're back into landscape mode makes it a little bit better alright so we've done two coats of the Angeles cream color on here so far I'm with the way that this is coming out I believe that the third coat is going to be all it's going to need it's actually it's coming out pretty decent with with the first two coasts came out really nice a lot of coverage on it but if you if you look real close on here you can actually see the brushstrokes on here and that's what we're trying to eliminate these with these real thin coats like this we're trying to make absolutely certain that there's no brushstrokes and I don't run up I actually told you guys this but you know I wanted to buy a pair of broad streets Allen Edmonds Broad streets and they don't make them anymore and there's a few of them left that Allen Edmonds still has in stock but you know they're close to $400 a pair and a broad street is nothing more than a pair of McCallister's don't have the you know that our spectator shoes so I got to thinking about it's like I can do that I can make those so I bought one on eBay and I found a a decent pair you know they're sound they weren't they weren't pretty by any stretch of the imagination like the last person that honed them hadn't really taken an awful lot care of them hadn't been polished they had them look like they had ever been polished so pick them up I had them for sale for $30 I said yeah $30 plus the $10 shipping on it at $40 into this into these shoes and you know at the end of the video you'll get to see the soles on this money put soul savers on them I'm not crazy about those either so you know 30 bucks plus $10 shipping I thought they were a really good deal and I decided all right well another I think the paints were seven eight dollars apiece free shipping on ebay so when I had not bought those about the two color paints but my brushes but I use the brushes for other stuff as well so I don't really count that as cost on you on the shoes per se but you know when everything is all said and done even after I even after I send these off to Beto's leather works I'm let Steve get his hands on them and put me a pair of junior soles and heels on here I figure out the end of these for less than a half of the price of a brand new pair by the way if you get a little piece of lint or something like that and and while you're trying to paint this corner of your brush onto that piece of piece of lint keep working at it and get that Pete get it out of there keep your finish looking nice and smooth you know we've already got a couple of coats underneath the pinking it's the right color now we're gonna get right up to it you don't necessarily have to go underneath there with all all three or all four coats you can see from the sides the sides here you know the exception of right around in here it's got pretty good coverage the coverage just with the first two coats and what I found is you know if you if you're going along and you're doing like I'm doing here by the time you get all the way down here this up here is dry so when you get back to it you don't know if you've done it or not so you you tend to go back over it again and you end up putting them you know extra coats of paint on it so I think it's still going to end up with a grand total like five coats all right so that's that that one side let me coat this out right quick make sure we get a good coverage over all this work out your brushstrokes right quick one catch this for your own video cut off the video when we come back we'll be ready to airbrush the rezulin on there now you don't have to do airbrushing but I find that airbrushing the for the finish one for the top finish it just makes it much much smoother you don't have any streaks or rungs or anything like that especially if you go nice and light with it you work off of the piece you brush down and then come up and pop you go in the other direction you'll end up getting paint on the backside of there you fondling my shoes so I know I did some of this already I know I've already coated out some of some of this area that I'm painting right now so it's actually getting part of it as getting another coat so anyway when we come back this will be done and we'll be ready to spray some resolution all right last little bit here before before polishing this is actually reza lien i do enough i'll have a work that i buy this by the court fee beings reza lien it's good stuff I don't know if that's what cobblers use but a lot of leather workers that's what we use for for doing you know finish work on leather all I'm doing now just put a light coat [Applause] you can say all blotchy has never done like that who and then look what turn that off put this one up next to it this is our completed one already as you can see I mean they're coming out pretty even last thing to do is to polish this one out and that's basically the whole step by step process so we'll polish this up we've got some severe mirror gloss in both clear and black we'll be using both of those I'll be using the severe cream in black I will also be using I will also be using some of the brown so when we come back everything should be done had laces in everything but that's pretty much step by step see you in a bit alright so as you can see this is the finished product yeah keep in mind guys I mean I'm no cobbler and the shoes are far from perfect you know I don't know if you guys remember but there was actually a nick right here I did my best to fix it you know with the burnished on there that's one of the reasons why I decided to go with the burnished is because you know I'm not the best at fixing leather to make it look like it's it's never been damaged but I guess this over the course of about four days it took a grand total of maybe five hours over the course of four days to do this you know and again I mean they're going they're going to steam over at Vito's leather and as soon as he's done with doing the doing the sole change soles and and heels on here I've asked him to do a video as well once he's got that video I'll post a link below you know and then these shoes will be done as far as I'm concerned I really like the way that they turned out you know for the most part I mean you can get up on them I mean look at around in here get a close-up of this you can see around in here on the the pinking you know if you follow the steps of that I've laid out here you know you can you'll get really really good results I mean you can't you can't see or there's there is no no overspray you know from the burnishing if you do it do the the burnishing before you do your topcoat and if you tilt this back and work your brush up underneath you know you won't give any any white on the painting so anyway good project for like I said I've said it before in the video it's a great project for anyone that wants to fondle their shoes for a long while and and get off on playing with their shoes I'm thinking my next project is probably going to be I might do the same thing with with a pair strands I like the look of that so anyway like and subscribe if you want to get in if you want to get notifications just to win on when I upload new videos like and subscribe and hit that
