hello everyone welcome welcome to ucla my name is anna spain bradley i'm vice chancellor for equity diversity inclusion here at ucla as a land grant institution ucla acknowledges the gabriellano tongba peoples as the traditional land caretakers of the los angeles basin and southern channel islands as we get started today i'm pleased to welcome all of you for our ucla office of equity diversity inclusion signature series this is the final event of a long year of interesting and signature topics and the focus today is a conversation on the changing landscape of gender recognition in america a timely and vital topic as we understand america to afford people certain rights under the law and in the world to join us today we have an expert panel and before i introduce them i also want to thank our co-sponsors for today's events which are the ucla committee on lgbtq affairs the ucla department of gender studies the ucla lgbtq campus resource center and the ucla williams institute today's panel includes jade alyssa cariaga who is the co-chair of the ucla committee on lgbtq affairs a bruin a former bruin and serves currently as grant and equity manager at the western states arts federation managing a national cohort of leaders of color and administers the equitable distribution of over three million dollars in the thirteen state region and portions of oceana associated with the organization that you for which they work for with a decade of experience in program direction cultural anthropology arts policy jade has been selected as an arts consultant for projects funded by the california office of the small business advocate in the los angeles county department of arts and culture their work has been included in national policy reports by the american academy of arts and sciences the american for the arts and commended on the municipal level by los angeles county's third third district uh supervisor cool there's so much more but i want to acknowledge that jade has been a fantastic alum of and steward of ucla in supporting and advocating for the rights of people in our community and beyond and has done so with a truly inclusive and generous spirit so jade welcome it's great to have you here today our next panelist is andy cuffino andy serves as director of ucla's lgbtq campus resource center andy who uses he him pronoun serves as the director and also serves as the co-chair of ucla's gender recognition implementation committee a ucla ucla wide university initiative aimed at ensuring that ucla is in compliance with and advances the aims of california's gender recognition act andy consults senior administrators many people throughout the community staff students faculty alumni and more on policies and practice to make sure inclusion is afforded to all on the basis of gender gender identity gender expression sexual orientation and also discussing importantly how to reduce bias and how to ensure the prevention and protection of rights and prevention of...
