hello this is dr. grande today's question is does borderline person I disorder change as an individual grows older if you find this video to be interesting or helpful please like it and subscribe to my channel that way you won't miss any new videos so when looking at borderline personality disorder for a long time as we look at the research there's this debate about whether the symptoms that we see in the DSM the definition of board line person is order if those symptoms tend to improve or if some symptoms improve and others stay the same others worsen really any combination regarding symptom change and there are a lot of different theories about the progression and course of borderline personality so we see these mixed results in the research but there's some agreement over some of the symptoms for example generally it's greed upon that impulsivity the impulsivity that's characteristic to borderline personality disorder does tend to decrease markedly as an individual moves into their 30s 40s and even more so 50s and 60s we also see increased functioning around career so vocational functioning tends to increase and the relational style that we see with borderline personality seems to change as individuals with borderline personality over they tend to have better relationships although one theory explaining this suggests that avoidance actually increases so the relational difficulties aren't as evident because the individual is avoiding relationships altogether we also see a decrease in identity disturbance and the characteristics of interpersonal relationships that we see a borderline personality of being entitled and being demanding those two tend to decrease as an individual grows older other changes we tend to see include less self-harm fewer suicidal behaviors less rule breaking and a lower level of emotional turmoil now there's another theory here about the course of borderline personality that suggests improvement occurs in the 30s and 40s but when individual reaches their 50s some of the symptoms move back to the original levels so there's this temporary period of remission or partial remission that's just one theory we know that there seems to be a decrease in functioning that occurs in the 50s even when there was an increase in the 30s or 40s this decrease in functioning that we sometimes see in the 50s may be explained by comorbid factors comorbid mental disorders and also could be explained by the specific types of presentations for example higher levels of anger tend to predict decreased functioning as an individual gets older so we see that several symptoms of borderline personality disorder do tend to lessen as an individual grows older but other symptoms and other characteristics of borderline personality sorter tend not to change too much or if they do change they change fairly slowly these would include anger feelings of emptiness mood dysphoria fear of abandonment lack of empathy the tendency to use manipulation and selfishness these characteristics don't tend to change too much over time we also see...
