Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Grad Coach TV where we demystify and simplify the oftentimes intimidating world of academic research. Today two of our seasoned dissertation coaches David Fair and Ruth Coetzer are going to be speaking about six of the most common mistakes that they see coming up in the conclusion chapter of dissertations and theses. This discussion is based on one of the many, many articles over on the Grad Coach blog, so be sure to check out the blog at gradcoach.com/blog for a wealth of information regarding all things research-related as well as access to our free dissertation and thesis writing mini course. If you are looking for more hands-on help with your dissertation or thesis or any sort of research project, be sure to check out our one-on-one coaching service where we hold your hand step by step through the research journey. You can learn more about that and book a free consultation with one of our friendly coaches over at gradcoach.com. Hey Ruth, welcome to the coach cast, it is always great to have you here. Thanks, David, it is great to be here I am looking forward to talking about the conclusion chapter. So, we are jumping right into it with our first common conclusion mistake, which is not clearly articulating how the study achieved the research aims you set out to answer. Ruth, how can we make sure this is clear. Absolutely, it is the first mistake and it is a very, very common mistake. And so, when we look at the conclusion chapter, we need to remember that we cannot look at it without considering the introduction chapter. So, your conclusion chapter ultimately is where you close this loop back to the beginning of your dissertation. So, in your introduction chapter, you will mention the aims of the research and your conclusion chapter is where you will tell the reader clearly how you address these aims. So, you almost need to view it like top and tail, two ends of a loaf of bread where they speak to each other. And you can do this in a fairly simple way you do not have to go into long explanations. What you can simply do is say my research addressed the aims by finding or by doing X, Y and Z. But it is really important to make sure you do this because as I said the examiner when they read your thesis the top and tail, the beginning and the end are what speaks to how you actually finally did what you set out to do. That is a great point especially because often enough that is a place where we start off when looking at a thesis or dissertation, is reading the introduction and the conclusion to get a sort of overview of the study before then as a marker or a reviewer you are going to go through it step by step. So, making sure that connection is...
