so you want to get an off-road racing same thing happened to me about three years ago decided hey I've been wreck willing for a long time and everything and saw a bunch of these videos of this thing called king of the hammers and ultra for racing and one that looks really cool and I want to do it so I decided I'm gonna and I kind of want to do a pretty blind didn't know what I was doing what I was gonna build it I decided eh I'm gonna build a this claps looks cool 4,800 I can kind of do what everyone so I knew nothing and really messed up and ended up kind of we spent a lot of money on something that just didn't work out then through research and everything decided upon starting and a stock class and me looking for no because of that kind of a little bit of lack of resourcing to know what I was doing I decided to paint I want to make a video everything that I kind of learned over the past few years of getting involved in racing doing my hammers multiple times racing dirt riot Pro rock the new renegade series anything like that like endurance style racing and everything so I'll put this video together of kind of a hey this is what I've learned and gone through over time it's that way maybe someone else doesn't make the same mistakes I made or has a chance to just kind of start a little bit better off than I did [Music] all right so you've seen racing watching wheel dental videos and everything Koh that's how I got the bug I mean we've if you could wear out an Amazon playlist we probably wore that out before we started this and everything I mean back in the DVD days all right getting into this what I didn't realize is how awesome the off-road culture is and how helpful everyone is the we didn't talk to anyone before we started building us we just kind of threw together I known one guy that I kind of briefly met at it at Jeep meet it was the hack shot guys John Mac lights and I hit him up maybe once or twice in like hey and Bill in the 46 in our car what do you do when he was super helpful what I wish I had known is how helpful everyone else is so if you're thinking of doing this and getting into a race face book if you follow any team there I think that shoot him a message they 99 percent of these teams will absolutely come back to you with pages of information on how to build how to get into this who to contact Oh talk to this guy about this talk to this guy about this and everything like that I didn't realize that so for anyone that wants to get into this and decides all right this is cool I want to either build either come to a race first experience it see if this is really something you want to do once you decide that start talking to these guys they're your best resource and I wish I would have no net beforehand to start talking to some of these teams and get an info because again I bought built things did a whole bunch of stuff that didn't work at all but talk if I were to talk to one person and be like yeah dude don't do that that's that's wrong like find your fan on Amazon doesn't work alright so we talked about experience the culture go to race start talking to people another big thing that you want to start a wait before you start building decide what class you want to race decide hey I want to build just a like a regular stock just to have fun with it or you know what I got some resources I got the bug I want to build a fallen buggy and everything we're in a full-on buggy now we operated for 800 class I started in stock and I'm so glad I did because I was a great way to kind of start off learning the environment learn how racing works learn how to put program together and everything it's not just building cargo race there's a lot to it which is what I want to go over in this video so you've decided pick a class then it's time to start building gathering your info again talking these teams watch these videos and everything decide what you want to build how I want to build it especially for going stock research your platforms decide hey do I want to start with the Toyota do I want to start with the Jeep I want sir the next day there's so many different great platforms especially if you're looking to go stock and if not you're too buggy and everything who do you want do you want to build it you want someone else to build it it's a lot to go into to decide to start doing this but it's a lot of fun and I love it I'm so glad I did it everything in my opinion the way I see it it boils down to three things you need to start racing and continue to develop your race program and go out to do small race far as your weekend little pro rock or dirt right all the way to go to king of the hammers you need you're a star you need a support structure and you need time the biggest thing time you and I believe how much time is dedicated to not just building a car making plans driving to the races sometimes these races are a day drive away and everything so those are the three things I'm gonna kind of get into a little bit farther expand upon race car far as building maintaining pre running or prepping the car for races your support structure which kind of encompasses everything else of getting the races races what to do when you're home and then just the amount of time that gets into running the race program not just building a car so you've decided what class you're gonna do now what decides that is the rule book rule book is your most important thing you need to research when you're building even deciding to build a car and building the car some rule books are as simple as hey it's got to have four wheels you can go or when you start getting into some of the limited classes there's a lot that goes on - now with every class you've got to worry about all your safety features your tubing diameter which I needed to pay attention to better in my first bill because I felt the whole thing out of one in three quarters when it required two inch so that was great I wasted the whole cage so make sure you read the rule book please reading and understanding it on Bart you ultra4 goes everything like that they do have pretty good communication that if you have a question on the rulebook you can either hit up the group on Facebook whether or not what class you can do to 4,600 group has an amazing forum / Facebook group that if you have any interest into it you could join it up there's some great resources on that that they will answer your tech questions as well as the dirt right series or anything like that again everyone that races is out to help I know I keep stressing that but I couldn't believe when I got to my first race and I was 8 up I blew my fan I didn't know what was going on I didn't have the right equipment with me I didn't the right place to stay and the three guys that were around me just absolutely just kind of like took me in helped me out and I mean this guy gave me a fan he helped me work on the car all night to try and get it ready get ready for qualifying blue tiger we blur fan but it was really cool to see everyone come together and really help and I'd never experienced that before and that's like that with every race it's not even being a new guy they're gonna help you more but even as you continue to race everyone is there to help but enough of that back to understanding building the car when I was looking through the rule book I'm like okay I need seats and seat belts and everything like that but when you dig a little bit farther into your safety devices it's it's a good chunk of change because everything has to be far as especially if you looking to go into the pro classes in renegades or dirt riot and ultra for anything classes and ultra for everything has to be SFI rated which meaning it's your overall like it's not just a Amazon your seat belt so you have to get them from an accredited sure that's passed regulations window nets seat belts helmets fire suits Hahn's devices all that stuff really adds up so again it's just working that into your budget and understanding that that stuff is going to be required and all the seat belts the way they have to be routed the angles that need to be at you know understand when you're putting your car together your cage whatever read all that ahead of time so that way you don't well down all these mounts guy did and then how to cut them off because they weren't within the regulation or the recommended angles at all these seatbelts so all that stuff is designed to save you because when you start again pretty fast you start bouncing off trees or you know rolling in I've done it a few times these devices is there to help you and when you have them installed correctly they work right when you don't have them installed correctly they don't work right right other than that what's awesome about off-road racing is you can kind of build the car however you want staying within the roebucks depending on what class you're gonna be into but it really boils down in your imagination of what you see works what's your been experience how you want to build it how you want it to look feel work and everything so you can I have that on your own I said the best way is do your research look at what other people are running look at what either you've done in the past because chances are if you're getting an off-road racing you've probably wheeled beforehand and everything so that's my advice on I'm getting initially building your car the first time or just buying a premade car that's actually what I did would discard behind me it was a chassis but instead of trying to redesign you build my whole chassis and everything like that good friend of mine Randall Hall just got a new chassis from Liberty mountain and didn't need his old one so I bought that off him again I cut off the front of it cause the back of it made it my own upgraded stretched the wheelbase but trailing arms done and everything but it was a lot easier honestly to start with kind of a chassis already made um then just start from scratch my stock class car my 4600 was a three Rubicon that was stock completely stuck so cage suspension everything I ended up doing on that which time money effort I'm glad we did it I learned so much about fabrication building suspension just from constantly researching watching videos gathering as much information as I could about building these cars which I learned so much from that to get into a bigger class or two buggy like a 4,800 car like what I have right behind me I learned all of that from building my stock car all right next big thing I want to talk about is your your support system your support network whatever you want to call it everything else that comes out side of the initial car this is another really big category that I personally really overlooked like Oh like alright sweet I got this awesome race car how do I get it to races alright cool I bought a 500 hour trailer that broke on us on our way to race cuz we broke an axle and then we broke a leaf spring and then the weight simpler we got pulled over so your sport system is a big part of your overall your race program not saying you have to go out and buy an $80,000 tiller home and all this stuff as much as I would love to have one but you don't need that you can go the regular flat trailer and everything but thinking about all this extra stuff that goes into your race program than just the car kind of boils down to people equipment and then the money because money is is a deciding factor of where you want to go in off-roading how much you how much you want to put into it how much you don't want to put into it and then how much it actually does cost because it's always more than you think alright people you're never gonna win a race on your own yeah you might be the only one driving he might have built in the single seater car and not run a co-driver I always run a co-driver cuz I winch a lot and it's really helpful not necessarily just having someone to winch but having a navigator having someone to watch gauges because you're going through the woods at 3040 miles an hour trees come really fast and when you look down real quick to check your temperature and then there's a tree there it sucks and you break axles like that Dana 44 so don't last long alright also when you get into the big races so if you want to go to Koh or something like that driving out there pit crews um helping having helping people with your your your merchandising everything you know it's if you tried and tackle all this by myself I did this myself I tried to tackle running this entire team and doing everything myself until I finally had a couple good friends that just say hey let me help you and I was able to lean on them which really helped take a lot of stress off me personally and was able to run a better race team we were much better we were more unprepared this year for Koh but so much more prepared on other aspects of it because I finally wanted to delegate a little bit and have people that just say hey I want to help out can I just do basic stuff gonna help with this guy up with this now that encompasses everything from prepping the car at the race actually doing picker stuff no helping just you know run up to registration real quick because you forgot your band or you need you know they needed a your insurance card or something like that something real simple - you can work on the car and prep yourself and then just have someone else real quick hey run up run up to staging or something like that I lean on my family a lot which has been really nice and I hope everyone has the same structure that I do coming from that like I told my family hey I'm getting into this off-road racing and everything like that they just came out for race just to kind of cheer for me and everything when was there for the glory and the heartbreak because sometimes you don't finish races and it really sucks but at the same time sometimes you win and when they're there to see that - it really helps all right next thing I want to talk about is your first your support system that goes is your support equipment again another thing that I kind of didn't think of like Ida flap that trailer in a truck cool now thinking about your equipment of getting the races coming back from the race where are you gonna work on your race car do you have a garage you just have an open driveway do you have a shop do you have a tent because I didn't want to work outside also big thing that we didn't think about too is where are you gonna stay up erase i tented it for a year straight and sometimes it really sucks when you're all muddy and nasty after a race and it starts monsoon and Kentucky and all you have is a tent it's flooded and everyone else is in there nice trailers dry it off but everything I mean it was cool we did it but looking back on it I love my enclosed trailer I'll tell you that much I do love my enclosed trailer because it's a nice place this thing but when you're deciding hey I want to start racing I want to start doing this you know do I put all my money in my racecar and not think about anything about getting to getting to the race what am I gonna do at the race how am I getting the racecar there um you know what what type of truck do you have to get there you know is it just a day cab where you can only drive by yourself most of these races from I'm based in Connecticut so most of these races at least are 5 plus hours and that's the closed one that's Pennsylvania we've done 24 hours we've done all the way to hammers I drove so far it's been twice we've driven the Hammers which we usually do in about three days but all these races are far away there's nothing that's close for me depending on where you live you decide race hopefully there's something closer but that's something that you need to think about when you start developing race programs all right all right what am I going to use to get to these races do I have a dependable vehicle or something that's comfortable to stay in and 1224 hours to go drive on a race course and then drive home so it's a lot of driving we are gonna stay at the race it's dead is 100% up to you I said we stayed in tents for a little while and yeah Kentucky kind of sucked but other than that we did hammers last year intense never again but we did it and we act we had a great time like that was my first ever hammers trip everyone that's an off-road needs experienced campers but we roughed it it was fun ish but in the end we did it cuz I put my money in in a car we put our money getting out there and we just didn't have the leftover resources or leftover money for an RV or anything so we decided hey I want to race so we're doing it we stayed in tents looking back on it now that I have an enclosed trailer and everything it's much nicer but that's a personal thing that each person has to think about a what level of uncomfortableness in order to go racing do I wanna experience alright last thing I want to talk about far is your support system is your logistical support getting to these races especially we start doing bigger ones like the biggest one we do is is king of the hammers but four is tracking your you suck insurance your your pit crew your pit finders your entrance fees just paying how much fuel you're gonna you know use on the way there you know who's paying for fuel where we stop and fuel all that stuff you need to think about a little bit to developing a race program of who's gonna be the person that signs us up for races who's the person that's gonna go to registration and check the car in and I think generally speaking of its the driver but again the more people do you have to lean on the less stress it is that one person and you can have a very good race program with only a few people but if you dull these responsibilities out a little bit it really helps make it go a little smoother and then just one person pulling their hair out trying to handle everything for his registration getting there you know develop loading the trailer prepping the car all this stuff has to go into your support structure I know I talked about the initial build of the car beforehand but all right now we're getting at a point if you have everything made you're gonna start racing prep race prep race prep race prep you'll hear a lot of the pro the big names in this your Campbell's you're like what follow the Campbell's on Instagram because every single time they race that car gets blown apart I don't do that level of prep but every time I go to race 100% not in volt check go through 100% fluid check my with anything that has a wear pattern or anything like that I check and everything because there's nothing like going out and racing and having just one bolt come loose that you didn't check or some sort of stupid failure that cost you your race it just kind of makes racing not fondants you know we all want to finish it all on a win in the end finishing a lot of times it's actually a really big deal even for a local race not being able to do that because you didn't prep your car or go through it it's not that fun but that goes into your what jessica support like all right racing is Friday and Saturday usually for a pro rock for dirt riot for any of the local races even ultra for races usually Friday Saturday you qualify in Friday Tech and qualifying Friday and then you race on Saturday depending on where you live from for me that's all right I need to leave Thursday I need to get there Friday do the prep on the car there get ready to get it tucked in get signed in everything like that go pre run qualify generally break something in qualifying spend all night fixing the car getting it ready for Saturday's race race on Saturday hopefully don't break if I do break it figure out how to get it back on the trailer get it back fix it to the Pointer I can do that then drives 5 10 15 hours home Sunday unpack the car power wash it get cleaned off everything and then back to work so you know before that is where do you prep the car ok that for me that's a couple days right there taking all the body panels off checking everything nothing bolts right so you would just go support and figuring out cars have some time to go through it and prep the car before you get to your race working that in a little bit helps with your logistical support other stuff hey what am I gonna cook what am I gonna eat how much beer am I gonna bring bring a whole lot beer is currency especially a murse anytime anything and my co-driver is the one filming right now but I got to go off an old tangent here I was so focused when I first started racing on the car prepping the car get a car rental car got to be ready to go I didn't get a chance to really hang out and this year at hammers in the past season I got a chance to really hang out with everyone go to the fire pit and everything like that I can't stress enough how awesome that was this culture is fantastic so for anyone that's watching this thinking about racing you just do it it's awesome the culture is fantastic about the willingness of people to help and also everyone is genuine just a really cool person hang out with pro level to Joe level it's a really cool culture to be part of now that spools back to beer how much how much jingling did we bring almost 200 to almost 200 cans of new england-style beer and we brought it out west and everyone is really excited and we ran through it all just like handing it out hey you know I'm getting you know almost doing the Train thing you know one for years once right but get any chance to talk to people that you generally don't talk to that our West Coast guys or guys even at the local races that are not from your area hey this is how I set up my car this is how I set up this and everything oh that's a good idea I should do that nobody changes that made in my car just because of from talking other people or you know basing my research off of other people's cars that win more than me this this industry doesn't like to hide a lot everyone likes talking about their stuff which is really cool so we just goes for kind of all boils down to everything else you need to get to the race survive at the race and get home don't forget about any of that that goes into developing your whole race program alright I made a lot of references already to it but the last thing that in my three things that you need to develop a race programmers want to start racing is time we talked about the time to get to the race to get home at the race prepping all that stuff but it all it adds up to a lot um I I referenced a bunch of times research I spend hours online watching videos looking at research what can it helped old pirate articles and everything I'm sure everyone that four wheels are as four wheel for a while has been on pirate there's a lot of great resources on pirate but everything from second per steering suspension everything like that all that is when you really get a newest it just kind of consumes everything and it's a lot of time so before you pull the plug inside hey I'm gonna start racing everything understand the time can time commitment to it and everything especially if you want to be pretty serious about it and start trying to win and chasing points that's a huge one chasing points for a local series last year I chased dirt riot points which was awesome because we ended up getting first East Coast and second nationally because we chase points but that was every other week loading up prepping we already talked about okay that's a couple days they're prepping weld the trailer drive out there race come home wash off the car re prep refix everything because I'd like to break things so understanding the time commitment to it it's big you know especially if you're coming from a you know a family environment or anything like that I hate seeing that or my wife won't let me go or anything you know thinking about that when you want to start deciding I won't start racing it's probably the biggest thing to just think about starting if you want to start or not if you just want to be hey this maybe involved in racing but just pitting for someone or I want to start racing is understanding the time commitment to it everything my dad the money the car and everything like that that can all come from just saving and working on it slowly building building it up over time but the initial like hey I'm racing the time can commitment it's it's it's a pretty big big thing to get into again that I didn't realize and I I caught the bug really personally I caught the bug really really hard like this has changed kind of everything for me my whole life planning everything I want to be involved in the off-road industry but okay that's enough fun time I think I've drilled that people few pointers about how I messed up initially starting and hopefully you don't because time and money are two major components of this and we don't I don't want you waist than any of them
