Goad radio button field
hello I am Laura Betts I'm a developer at Kraus IT and I'm going to show you how to treat portal rose to act like radio buttons so what does that mean what am I going to show you as you can see here there are two portals on here one of buttons and the other would check box as I go to the one with portals you see me selecting a button on different portal rows and it distracting and other rows in the check box you'll see week click on a different checkbox in a different room and it gives a little words that there's already a checkbox selected in a different portal grow and therefore this checkbox cannot be just be selected until we deselect checkbox in the one row and check it in a different row in the buttons they can also be selected in D selected so why is this useful well perhaps you're having a questionnaire with a test that has questions and answers and you want to select us that a certain choice for question is correct you can easily then mark one as correct inside a portal from the question another taste that we'll look at today is for conducts database that therefore you can choose a primary organization that a contact is related to or primary contact information such as phone numbers emails or addresses so you'll see we have the contact record for Jane Doe she is a part of different companies and also there's access to their phone number email and address currently you can see that there's already setup for button to select a primary company before we set up the portal rows for the buttons we need to make sure that some things are in the database setup is there so that this works so we see in the relationship if we have the contacts database which is Jane Doe we also have the company record with the Troi table in between for her contact information we have tables for those as well we'll need related tables to the contact records for this to work into the contacts record itself we will need a boolean global value for the relationships and to help navigation purposes we'll also have a global field for the contact ID it's not necessary it just helps for right now did the join which again will have a global idea and join for navigation for this is much like I said in the contact record not necessary but it helps with speed we will also need a boolean field for that table to indicate that it is a primary record to that related content so let's look at the scripts for the button I have three different parameters that I am passing through the button choice ID that is the ID of the related record of the one I am currently clicking on option whether I am selecting it or deselecting it an item ID is the ID of the main table that I'm working on which is currently Jane Doe so once we get the parameters freezing the window so that the user doesn't see what the next steps are going on so there isn't a window flash I always see that we're getting the idea of the current contact record into the global field that we set in our main table with the relationship we can get the ID then we will get it set a variable based on that global relationship of the choice that has previously been picked as a primary choice then we'll navigate to the enjoying table so then we can start working on selecting the new choice once we are there or getting the ID of the of the choice that we want to pick and easily navigating to that particular record record this can be done with a find instead it's just a bit faster with the field and good a related record after we successfully navigate to the record we'll set that choice that we are making as the primary choice into the field that marks it as primary in the related table so now we have this if statement whether a choice has been previously picked and if that previous pick is different than the one we are picking now if there has been a previous pick and it's different then we again set a global field and navigate to that specific record so that once we're on that record we can deselect it as the correct choice by nulling out the field that marks it as primary that's for selecting and for deselecting it's easy as just after we navigate to the field to again deselect the field that marks it as primary there are some errors if there's problems navigating to the record or to the layout but afterwards we go back to the contact record because we were in the join table and we refresh the window so that the buttons show the correct primary that was picked now that we have the script for the button let's go into layout mode and see what happens here so we have a button bar here which actually has two different sections and as we can see that one is an icon that shows that it is empty and then one is an icon that's almost the same to show the film this does work better when you have icons that look similar but just has a small difference to it this one the empty one is to show that it's deselected and this wants to show that it is selected another feature that I added one on to the selected one is some conditional formatting which the formula is just one and the icon color is whatever I wanted to be within the button bar there's also a different hide parameters so this is based off of for the related table with the primary field if the deselected needs to hide whenever it's it is selected as primary and the selected needs to hide when it's not primary so let's go into the hood scripts for both deselected and selected we have the same script for once that are marked as primary and needs BD selected let's go look at the parameters for for parameters we have the choice ID which is again the related record of the one we're choosing and the option to deselect there's also the option ID item ID but that is the way that isn't set up it's not necessary because we don't need to know what other ones are being selected since this is just needs to be deselected so we get to the unselected choice and you want to select it we'll look at the parameters for that and we have the choice ID the option is now select and item ID is of course the ID of the contactor your jingo so that is how button set up let's go to the other option that I showed before but the checkbox when you try to select a different row and it gives a message that that is not allowed so let's look at the script for that so in this script you'll see that there are four different parameters for that first being ID of the reader record which mean that would be the join second would be the field name of the primary field in the related record third one is the value of the field that is being marked primary which means that it visit it one or is it empty for this purpose and then the primary count that's counting how many related records are marked as primary which should be again either one or blank so we get the parameters then we check if there's at least one other related records selected as primary if not it just looks it because of the functionality help I'll check boxes work if there is at least one other related record that is marked as a primary and if so it deselects that choice because it after the check box has been checked it will be marked as one and then that's when we tell the person that this check box cannot be selected so let's see that in action have one set a party here so let's move the button over and checks box onto the layout this check box is based on the primary field which is a boolean in the related table in this we have a scripture it is for on object modify we select the script that we have just made and the primer is that we have set is the ID of the join table with the one we're selecting field name of the primary field in the related record which get the old name is a good way to get it dynamically in case the field name ever changes the value of that field and then again value counts list of the primary field which it doesn't matter how many records there are since we're going to only list the related records that have a value the one value that is what's being listed out here and the value count is what is being counted that list now we have the check box set let's save the record so that now has the check box in it and now we can see that when we select a different organization it gives a message we can deselect one and then select another one the advantage of doing it with the check box over the button is that you can easily copy and paste that scrub anywhere because of the use of passing or variables with the field names you can trust the way that the check box works without having to configure what hide so much shows with the buttons it has to be more specific to that current table and related record so that's a little tip of how to vance your user interface by having polar oil buttons act like radio buttons thank you for watching this tutorial and stay safe have a great day
