when I was 10 years old I had the the good fortune of not breaking my arm in January and breaking my leg in June other than my pediatrician I really had not had much exposure to doctors there was just something about dr. Chaplin his personality and his willingness to talk to me like I was an adult I found myself not only considerably less scared than I would have otherwise been but I was actually interested in what was going on with my body from there on out I thought that if I could do that for other people that would just be fantastic that was recruited to go down to the University of Tennessee in many ways Tennessee wasn't it just wasn't home so when the opportunity arose here to help build a neuroscience program at a hospital in a community we knew and loved already it was just too much of an opportunity to pass up Wake Forest is so easy to feel like home we can walk every place we can walk to get ice cream we could walk to the lake and that's together time it's really bonding you feel almost like it's a little bit of paradise here because it is so beautiful and it is so historic but there's an undercurrent of warmth of commitment of wanting to make Lake Forest a better place I started seeing a pretty big gap between the technology that that is out there in other fields and what we were using in neurosurgery so I started looking at what it would take to take CT scans mris and turning them into 3d models that you could actually walk around the inside of one of the things I loved about northwestern medicine is we actually have an entire innovation department that looks at sophisticated ways of using some of this technology and and trying to marry it with excellence in patient care [Music] they didn't know what was wrong but they knew something something was drastically wrong he most likely was having a stroke he had not just a stroke but he had actually had a hemorrhagic stroke in a very difficult part of the brain stem with risk of increased bleeding they had prepared us to possibly transfer downtown downtown would have made it so I couldn't come home to my children every night when they decided that they could keep Matt at Lake Forest it's because they had their neuro tele unit we were able to actually use some of the new technology to use video screens where we could actually consult with one of the neuro ICU doctors downtown which allowed us to have a neuro intensivist downtown keep an eye on him while he's in our ICU here without the ICU care at Lake Forest I honestly don't think keep being walking [Music] I'm we're gonna get back to work now and we think I got cleared by my doctor to go back to work halftime I'm still working to the disability process and my employer hopefully one day soon they'll happen it's Christmas was it's a little speeder this year I realized that he may not have been with us if it wasn't for good doctors immediately doing what they needed to do I was thankful that we had him with us and that we weren't either in an ICU or worse so even though we have this beloved hospital that that's been kind of a Community Hospital largely for the Lake Forest community any community has to constantly reinvent itself the new Lake Forest Hospital is a major change in just the level of care in general it's providing a much higher level of care and sophistication for not only the Lake Forest community but also for these the surrounding communities we're building on something that was already great and making Lake Forest Hospital even greater a lot of what drives the future is gonna be driven by the community I'd like to think of it as just the beginning of a journey to incredible health care by providing that service to the North Shore as a it actually elevates Lake Forest you hire in the movies the hospital represents kind of a new hope for the future for for Lake Forest we are a world-class institution with world-class care providers who work together as a team for their benefit and they feel like they're at the center of that everything is finally about to come together [Music] you
