justification by faith wow this is the core reformation era doctrine this was luther's reformation breakthrough and it's so important for us to look at this and see what's going on here and see if we can come to the right understanding of justification now i'm going to be following some of what matthew bates has to say in his book salvation by allegiance alone this really helped me and it gives you an alternative to the reformation error kind of justification by faith alone and imputed righteousness we're going to look at an alternative to that and we're also going to look at what the early christians thought about justification so that interests you stay tuned because wow this is going to be really good now here romans 1 17 this was the verse that luther was focused on and he was in romans and he was looking at this and he was thinking i i need to be able to see this the right way okay and it's talking about the gospel paul's talking about the gospel he says for in it the righteousness of god is revealed from faith to faith as it is written that just shall live by faith and the way that this verse was being taught in luther's day that was that the righteousness of god being revealed in the gospel was the righteous indignation of god that god is the one who judges and punishes sinners and luther was terrified and he was trying to figure out how do i how do i have a different view of this because i just can't handle this and he came to the conclusion that the righteousness of god that's revealed in the gospel is the righteousness that's given to us bait says this luther working from the greek determined that the righteousness of god is instead the righteous status that humans passively and instantly receive from god as a declared gift by faith okay so in romans paul talks about justification is by faith nobody's disagreeing with that i'm not disagreeing with that we're just trying to find exactly what is that biblical understanding and what we'll see is that luther and the reformers they did not get this right and i'll tell you why because they went to augustine and so luther's conception of faith was monergistic meaning mon one erd work one working it meant god is working i i am passive i cannot contribute i cannot respond to god and so working from that luther understood this doctrine of justification by faith alone meaning i can't do anything i can't respond to god and so it's not relational it's something god does it's a transaction god credited credits our account with christ's righteousness the moment of faith but if you're not holding on to a monarchistic framework then this doctrine should not be held on to okay if you're not um if you don't believe that we're unable to respond to god and god's the only one working and we can't do anything then this doctrine of justification by faith alone this doctrine of imputed righteousness is something that we should avoid okay because it's built on a faulty conception a faulty framework okay and so over here i have something from legionnaire ministries of reform ministry and it's talking about imputed righteousness okay so that is how we're justified and it says talk about they have been clothed by the imputation or transfer of the righteousness of christ to that person by faith okay so it's a transaction we're being clothed with christ's righteousness and so this idea of imputed righteousness is that god looks at us and he just sees christ's righteousness he doesn't see our sins would you get that impression by reading your new testament i wouldn't i mean what about ananias and sapphira oh oh did they lie i didn't even see that no what about jesus's letters to the churches in asia minor in revelation you guys are doing great you're looking really righteous with my with all my righteous clothing on wow no what's going on here guys we need to get this right okay and so we are justified by faith i'm not trying to argue otherwise but we need to understand this and if we have a proper understanding of faith then that's really going to help us and faith in the biblical languages in hebrew and greek it means faith and faithfulness pistes language faith and faithfulness if you're coming at it from a monarchistic view then you're only going to retain faith not faithfulness okay so it's going to be like a one-time thing that god does right but if pistus language of faith is faith and faithfulness it's about what god does and how i respond to him and it's it's ongoing and dynamic it's not a one-time thing okay and so what bates says is he says romans 1 17 17 he says the righteousness of god that's revealed in the gospel is jesus jesus was the one that lived right he was the one that revealed the father to us that's the righteousness of god that's revealed he jesus is the just one that lived by faith he showed us the way to live a perfect life he showed us the way of righteousness perfectly and the righteousness of god was revealed in him and the moment the moment when god's righteousness was revealed was in his resurrection when god raised jesus up from the dead because death is a consequence of sin but jesus never sinned and so when god raised him up to life he said jesus is the righteous one he is just he never sinned and therefore death has no hold over him and so the righteousness of god was revealed through the risen king jesus isn't that amazing and so what does that mean for us it means that justification by faith it means that we will be justified by having faith in christ but it also means being faithful to christ okay and what bait says is the a better way a biblically consistent way to see this is that instead of um this idea of being clothed in christ righteousness something given to us it's rather something that we can see as when we are incorporated into christ when we are in christ then we share in that same verdict okay that g that jesus received from god okay and so we become participants in the death and resurrection of jesus and we become participants in the same not guilty verdict that god spoke over his son okay and this language we see everywhere once you think about this in christ language paul uses it all over the place okay and romans 6. let's look at this it says therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death that just as christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father even so also should we sorry even so we also should walk in newness of life okay so it's all about us dying and being raised up with christ then we can share in that not guilty verdict that god gave jesus okay and look down here in verse 7 it says for he who has died has been freed from sin well guess what freed freed from sin this phrase going right here romans 6 7 ben freed this greek word strong's one three four four i'll show you i'm not good with greek but it means to show to be righteous declare righteous well guess what this is the word that's used that's translated justified look 24 times that's how it's predominantly used justified so being justified our justification is connected with baptism into christ okay and if you're thinking but justification is by faith not by baptism well baptism is something we do in faith and baptism was always the the moment or the the place that the individual would confess christ jesus as lord be baptized into christ and be risen with christ into that newness of life into new creation that is really the point where justification really begins okay and so it's dynamic it's relational it's not transactional okay so our justification has to do with us being in christ wow okay and bait says here he says in regard to baptism paul speaks of our union with jesus the messiah and death we were buried therefore with him by baptism into death yet paul goes on to speak of glory in association with resurrection life quote just as the christ was raised through the glory of the father we too might walk in newness of life in so doing paul connects not only jesus's resurrection life with the glory of the father but also our own sense we have come to participate in the resurrection power of the king through baptism and the gift of the holy spirit okay so our salvation our justification is all about being brought into that union with christ and living out that resurrection life okay he says jesus because he was the sinless righteous one was raised up by god unto resurrection life and installed a god's own right hand as the enthroned messiah his kingly rule has begun he has now poured out the holy spirit so that all who give allegiance to him might be united to him to his death resurrection and his enthronement this is what bates says about imputed righteousness he says not only is pistus this language used for faith capable of a richer definition but the transactional idea of the christ's righteousness being imputed to us so that it covers our unclean sins is nowhere found in scripture okay and this is this is a big deal if someone thinks that they have been clothed in christ's righteousness and they can live however they want that is completely against new testament teaching that is against the teachings of our lord jesus christ and this wow this is a deception guys this is a big deception if someone thinks that they can stay in their sins and receive salvation they are deceived and that's the big big problem here this is a big thing okay and that's what why we need to look at this that's why we're looking at getting a a biblically consistent understanding of justification okay so i'll read some more quotes from bates because he just says it really well he says the declared righteousness or received status of innocence unto resurrection life that properly belongs to the messiah alone is declared ours through union with jesus as a crucified vindicated and enthroned king salvation is sharing in jesus's life death resurrection and kingly glory so in the protestant tradition we just think about we're saved from something we're saved from the wrath of god or the punishment that comes from sin right or we're saved from hell or all these different things but we never think about what we're saved for and that is a big deal we are saved for the resurrection life we are saved so we can be participants in the divine life that's been made possible that's been made available to us through jesus christ and his life death and resurrection and so if we refuse to participate in this life that we've been given we are not going to abide in christ we're not going to be remaining in him and then the benefits of being in him will no longer be ours eternal life justification all of these things not ours if we're not in christ these things only rightly belong to him but he's going to bring us to salvation by being in him okay and so he says we might think of declared allegiance an initial receipt of the holy spirit as the first moment of grafting into jesus the king creating the union and enacted loyalty as ensuring the continual flow of benefits that which maintains the union okay we have to stay in christ by continually responding to him properly by maintaining a right relationship okay by learning from him and growing and walking with him okay think about the way that jesus was justified he lived obedient unto death he always did the father's will well guess what that's how god wants us to live and that's why he's made everything available for us so that we can live that way and so if we as christians refuse to live that way we are rejecting what god has done for us through christ we are rejecting the gifts that god has given us we are rejecting the grace that god is offering us okay god gives us grace to teach us to teach us so that we can learn godliness and righteousness and be like jesus god wants us to be like his son jesus he was so well pleased with jesus he wants everyone to be like that okay and so bait says nor is this simply a one-time infusion but rather it is a it is critical that the life-giving sap of righteousness receives status of innocence unto resurrection life continues to link the individual the king jesus via the holy spirit in other words perseverance is required okay he says in the messiah or incorporated righteousness can be defined as the saving perfect righteousness of jesus the christ that is counted entirely ours when we join the spirit-filled body that is already united to the righteous one christ the kingly head right so all of this language about being in christ think about uh continuing romans there's therefore no now no condemnation for those who are in christ jesus right let's look at that for those who are in christ jesus look therefore there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in christ jesus who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit if we're walking according to the flesh that's going to place us out side not in we can either live in christ or in sin okay we can't we can't do both the idea that we can be in christ an incident at the same time as a deception okay we have to choose okay and people think oh but we can't be perfect listen in first john it talks about if we sin confess our sin and the and will be cleansed from all unrighteousness right walk in the light have fellowship with one another it's cleansing us right god's made everything available to us so that we can live right and receive the life from god and learn righteousness and be like his son okay okay so what did the early christians think about this okay let's see what justin martyr had to say in this mid-second century he's talking to a jew named trifo he says this blessed is the man to him the lord will not impute sin as from the psalms that is having repented of his sins he may receive remission of them from god and not as you deceive yourselves that even though they be sinners but know god the lord will not impute sin to them okay and then he talks about david david repented and turned from his sin and so justin's saying hey if you think you have a right relationship with with god just because you're a jew just because you're part of his chosen people that's that's not it okay he's saying people need to repent of their sins those are the type of people that the lord will not impute their sin to people that confess and forsake their sin the lord will have mercy on them right let's read some other ones right here irenaeus second century says this when a man is grafted in is he grafted into christ grafted in by faith and receives the spirit of god he certainly does not lose the substance of flesh but changes the quality of the fruit of his works see that's consistent with what we're talking about here someone is grafted into christ by faith receives the holy spirit and then they change the way that they live clement of alexandria i think late second century he says now the just will live by faith right he's talking about the same same passage that paul quotes that luther was was looking at and this is what clement says which is according to the covenant and the commandments okay the just will live by faith we have to be faithful faithful to god in his and his commandments origen says this the son of god taking the form of a servant was made obedient unto death so that he might teach obedience to those who could not obtain salvation other than by obedience so jesus was obedient unto death and then we are to learn the same way of living the christ pattern he says also it is those who not only believe but also enter upon the life that jesus taught this life elevates everyone who lives according to the commandments of jesus it elevates them to friendship with god and communion with him okay obedience to christ abiding in his word abiding in the vine where the branches right and origin says this a man may possess an acquired righteousness from which it is possible for him to fall away so if we start in faith but we don't finish in faith we can fall away listen justification is by faith but faith brings us into a right relationship with god it brings us into union with christ especially when we are baptized in his name and then we have to live the way that god wills us to live we have to learn to live the way that jesus lived when he was on the earth we have to be obedient unto death we have to do the will of the father and so justification is not a one-time thing it's something that we have in christ and our final justification is when we are raised to life when we are given a new resurrect resurrected body and we are able to be the way that jesus is now that's our final justification that's our final salvation when all of us is saved and brought into that new life completely and why because god is going to make a new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells and he is getting people ready now for that new heavens and new earth okay and he's getting us ready by by freeing us from sin dying and being raised again to new life and then learning to live and walk in newness of life learning righteousness learning to live the way that jesus lived that is what it's about and all the early christians they knew that you can see that by their quotes and so what bates is talking about here he calls it incorporated righteousness and i think it's beautiful it's completely biblical it's historical and i really hope that this video has helped you guys and look i'll leave some stuff in the description below of course if you want to i
