hello this is dave at afx search licensed investigators this video we're going to talk about searching marriage records a lot of times it's important to find what the history of an individual is in terms of their marriage history divorces prior spouses and looking for one source of that is probably not the best path to take not one online standard database that's nationwide that will find every marriage that person has the best way to do it is to look for these as historical events each marriage each divorce and many other records created an activity creating the document when it happened an online database of all those wouldn't be accurate wouldn't be complete so a place to start is in the official records now you may want to start with the marriage records holder in that state it may be the Clerk of Court might be the probate court but that's not where to end because all of that history is not going to be in that one place it's a combination of records from different sources it may be death records may be birth records even if the subject hasn't died they may have had relatives who have died that they may have been listed on land records are another source of marriage information a deed to a property showing as husband and wife will demonstrate that the parties at least represented that they were married you may find civil court records a lawsuit may be filed against both parties probate court family court that may have information on child support for a former spouse mortgages will again list parties as husband and wife corporate records may have information remember that you may have to look at multiple states a person may have been married in another state may have been divorced in another state so combining all these records together can create that full picture of the marriage history each county has to be searched because in most states the marriage records are kept at the county level so a person could get a marriage license in one state maybe two months later actually getting married in the County if they get divorced they may file a separation agreement in one County and then the divorce can be finalized in even a fourth County so looking at all the counties is important to find out what that history is and then supplement that with unofficial records it's okay to look at unofficial non-government records to create the direction of where to look could be Facebook it could be LinkedIn it could be Spokeo it could be a lot of other places but remember this isn't the ultimate official record of marriage in divorce somebody could say they're married on an unofficial record and it may not be true so start with that unofficial either online or offline information and then let that point you to finding the official records marriage announcements and newspapers used to be helpful but that's not as common anymore but on older records it might be a useful source to find out where the documents may exist looking for marriage records as a complicated process is if it's important enough to get correct really do some legwork do some deep analysis of the documents that you look at read each one thoroughly to find addresses to find family members to find other resources that you can look to fill in that big picture if you rely just one on a push-button source you may not have the complete record and maybe leave out marriages and may leave out divorces they may even add in information on another person with a similar name we've had information where a client has come to us and say hey look I think this person was married before to Sally Smith well it turns out that the subject they were looking for had a common name and the person married to Sally Smith was a different person with the same name so look only unofficial records match it up make sure it's done right that way when you use this information whether it's in court whether it's for some other legal purpose it's correct and you don't become embarrassed by having wrong information if you want more resources or have questions about doing searching of marriage records you can reach us at our website afx search glad to help
