hey guys landscaping lifestyle here um this is actually my video number three i just took you around the shop real quick but i also wanted to just um say thank you guys who subscribed right away um it's really important to me to be able to share some tips and tricks with you guys and start building my network of landscapers so um one thing that i'll talk about to kind of wrap up the day i just uploaded three quick videos here to get things rocking um i just wanted to kind of tell you about my first year i started um doing i capitalized on the snow removal season in september of 2019 i didn't have any accounts i didn't even have a truck i had a nissan titan that was if any of you guys know the nissan titans it's a mid-sized truck it can't even hold a full commercial heavy grade steel plow so but i took that nissan titan and one of the things that i one of the reasons i started actually um decided to get into the reason i started to get into snow removal is because i was i took some coaching certification classes and part of that required me to meet with other coaches and i happened to meet with a gentleman named keith kelphus a lot of you guys if you're checking out a lot of landscaping videos and stuff you've probably already heard about him but keith kelvis is kind of a motivational guy i think it's uh the landscape employee trap is the channel that he first uh launched and i think he's pretty successful with it he seems to upload a lot of videos but i had a coaching session with him because i was going through my certification process and i'm like you know i remember looking up that guy in the past and i know he does things like that so i bought a session with him online and during that session he asked me what i wanted to do and i said i wanted to be a coach i wanted to help people be successful and i wanted to help them you know do what they were passionate about instead of just settling for corporate jobs because as you know i've said in my other videos that i have a full-time corporate job currently but i aspire to run my own landscaping business full-time so in this conversation he's like okay well what do you want to coach people to do and i said well i want a coach to motivate them and and get them to you know do what they want and not feel stuck and he's like okay so what's your success story and i said well i really don't have a success story but i have failed at starting the landscaping business five times so i know what not to do and i kind of chuckled about it or whatever and he kind of got serious on me and he said so you want to start a landscaping business teaching people how to be successful but you haven't even found a way to be successful yet you've just failed five times and obviously that hit me right away i'm like what the hell am i doing how am i gonna really teach people and get them to trust in me on my advice unless i go do it so i talked to my wife i think that weekend and i said hey i think i really just need to give this thing a shot and the support my wife's always been super supportive um which is why i love her to death but she's like yeah if you think that's what you need to do she had faith in me to do it so i started a landscaping business with a nissan titan and no plow and it was september going on october and we get up here in grand forks north dakota we tend to get snow as early as october each year so what i did was i built a website and put a bunch of ads out just using google adwords and things like that and i drove around in my nissan titan again it wasn't equipped to be a plow truck but i drove around in that truck and i went from business to business i hit up dairy queens and mcdonald's and burger kings and i hit up some other strip malls and i just knocked on doors and talked to managers and i said hey are you were you happy with snow removal last year my name's tim i own forks landscaping i just want to make sure that you feel confident you're going to be taken care of in the winter because we're adding new accounts right now and i ended up hitting one account that has four locations in the area and that really was the game changer for me and it was the only yes that i got from everybody that i talked to i probably went around to at least 30 different people and then i ended up getting because i had that google ads out as the winter as the snow started falling well let me back up so i had that one guaranteed commercial contract and i actually talked to the guy and i just said hey here's the deal i'm a new company i'm starting up and i want to cater to you so like the big thing that i want to offer is you're going to have my cell phone number i'm the i'm the primary owner i'm going to be the one providing the services so one of the selling points at that in this conversation was he didn't want to deal with a big outfit he didn't want to deal with you know calling a main office and then they dispatched people and they may or may not show up at 2 am or 4 am or whatever it might be his big thing was he felt good with just having my cell phone number in his phone so he could call me up anytime and know that i was going to be a person that would answer and i'd be the one responding to his request so right away he liked that personal touch to it and the fact that i was gonna be the one communicating and providing the service so for anybody starting out that's a big selling point for you if you're confident enough to go out and say that you're gonna pick up the phone and you're gonna be the one that's gonna be responding and the only the one person to work with that's a big selling point so keep that in mind so as we were talking through things we ended up signing a contract um and i just looked up some different contract examples online and i created the best terms that i could come up with as far as you know if they don't pay and how net 30 works and all those things so you got to do your research on those things and you can always just ask just ask the company do you guys pay right away you want to payment within 15 days if i invoice you every month for all the services provided can you pay within 30 days that's a net 30 and they'll communicate with you with typically how they internally work with invoicing and how they process their payments so anyway i don't want to get too much into that stuff but how i got started was i nailed that one contract i got four locations and it was just from me literally walking in and saying were you happy with snow removal last year i'm signing contracts for commercial clients would you like a bid and that sparked the conversation that ended up winning me in that contract side note looking ahead now i've provided them the service last year on my own while working another job and now i have them signed for three more years and i added their lawn care which includes fertilization and everything shrub trimming and the whole nine yards so i got literally they're a three-year account all season account so it ended up being not just my little nugget that got me started but it's gonna continue to be you know a staple that i'm gonna i guess repay that loyalty repay that respect for help for them helping me get started um but that's the deal i think the number one thing that i look back on and i see with that whole experience is i did not have the equipment yet so if you guys are hung up on saying oh i can't go do this because i don't have the equipment you're wrong okay if you have an opportunity if you have a friend with a truck or a family member with the truck or if you have a vehicle that you've paid off a little bit or maybe it's paid off in full if you have equity if you have two thousand dollars cash you can find a way to get the pickup and the plow that you need to provide the service that's where i was i had that truck and it was a nice truck but it wasn't a truck that i could use for plowing as soon as i got the contract then i went and i bought the truck because then i needed the truck everybody i feel like approaches things backwards and that's why i failed five times is because i was everybody and i would run around and buy all this equipment for six thousand dollars and then realize or maybe even eight to ten thousand dollars i'd save my money and save my money and i'd buy it all but then i'd have no where i'd finance it all and i'd have no contracts that would actually pay me that's the wrong way of thinking the number one thing that you have to do get the demand for the equipment that you need so in your mind psych yourself up that you're a landscaper and you do snow removal full time and walk into that place and tell them because you know how to do it you've worked for companies before you have experience walk into that business and talk to the manager talk to the business owner and say hey are you accepting bids i just wondering if you were happy with your snow removal last year i'm adding some clients and i'd love to get you a proposal and get you a bid if you're interested okay if you do that and you end up landing a job it does take some sales techniques so maybe do some research on sales and how to close deals or whatever but if you just spark that interest and they're willing to get a bid from you and you can submit it via email then you just gotta make sure that you look at your pricing what do you think it needs what do you think it needs to cost in order for you to make money in order for you to make that truck payment pay for the plow whatever it might be but once you have that contract or those couple first contracts then you can decide what equipment you need and that's exactly how i got that plow sitting right over here behind this trailer ramp was that's a boss v-plow i bought that brand new and that's what got me through that first account that and then i have a 750 pound salt dog salter that has a controller that's in the truck and all that stuff but that was my rig i took in my nissan titan i traded in it for three quarter ton ram it was a 2018 ram 2500 sorry my battery's down on my phone there but i traded that in for my 2018 ram 2500 said bye to the titan got a plow package on this truck so i bought that truck from the dealer who worked with the local plow business that sells boss v-plows and then i got the salt dog independently and just had that installed separately but i did all that after i knew that i had that contract and that contract ended up making me a good chunk of money throughout the winter and i just had the peace of mind that you know even if i break even at least i have this nice equipment that i now have a little bit equity in and and have paid off um at least the flow and the salter was paid off by the end of the by the end of the winter so that's my tip go get the work then get the equipment i know that's kind of elementary for some of you guys but i think we forget to maybe i've seen a lot of videos talking about how to start your business and do all those things and i think the number one thing is the reassurance that's what guys need is you need to be assured that you don't have to have the equipment in order to go get the work just go get the work and then you'll find a way to deliver because you're not going to want to let those customers down if you want it bad enough you won't let those customers down that's all
