watch what happens by just tucking this filter alright the sound tucks right into the pocket rhythmically of the kick drum and now you can hear that actually sounds really cool and if i open it it gets that movement that we love i've learned one trick that is almost guaranteed to make your sounds cut through the mix make them pop out and make them tucked down into the pocket especially if you're writing techno melodic techno or house one of the more electronics or genres okay and that trick today we're going to take a deep dive into filter envelopes what they can do for your sound design and then i'm going to show you three examples firstly using a soft synth we're going to use omnisphere then we're going to go ahead and do the same thing basically in a korg minilog xd which is some entry level sort of poly synth and finally i'm going to do it on the modular rack as well just to drive the concept home all right so let's jump in guys so i got my favorite software um synth behind me it's spectrosonics omnisphere honestly you could do this with any soft synth from serum to silence almost anything that has a filter envelope section so i've opened up an ableton project i've got a really cool synth roof here that i've written with omnisphere and it's just using a simple sawtooth sound nothing fancy single oscillator let's have a look at it and let's have a listen to it all right [Music] and just take that kick out okay so it's pretty cool melody i like the melody if you're interested in music theory if i have a look on this you'll just see the root note is f and i'm basically playing a minor seven chord which contains the first third fifth and seventh of the scale that's um d sharp g sharp and c okay so it's an f minor seven chord quite a nice melody i like it and you can hear that the amp envelope is pretty legato it's quite a long sound okay when i close the filter it's still got that length so as cool as it is all right when i play the kick drum um it doesn't tuck very well it doesn't sit very well with mickey in the pocket let's have a listen all right great so you see if i wanted to make this the drop of the song for me that sound is not nearly tight enough even if i tighten it with the amp envelope okay it still isn't sitting that nicely rhythmically and the filter is not having the same effect that i want because i want this filter really closed but i still want the sound to be audible this is where the filter envelope comes in all right so let's meet the kick i'm going to have a filter envelope section and the way...
