well thank you everyone for joining us today uh for this really important seminar my name is angela colantonio and i am a senior scientist at the kite research institute at the toronto rehabilitation institute at uhn i'm also the director of rehabilitation sciences institute at the university of toronto and a professor of occupational science and occupational therapy and i was asked by the uhn idea committee to moderate today's session today and really thank them for organizing this session an important topic i am of european settler descent born raised and living in the unseated territory of the mississaugas of the credit anishabek the chippewa houdini and the wendat people and i want to start this session by first acknowledging the land on which uhn operates there has been a uhn hospital on this land since 1829. long before that indigenous peoples were at stewards they as their descendants and we at uhn do now learned shared knowledge and healed each other regardless of where we sit today we owe much to the peoples that have called this land home for thousands of years it has been the traditional territory of many nations including the mississaugas of the credit the anishinaabeg the chippewa the haudenosaunees and the wendat peoples we also acknowledge that toronto is covered by treaty 13 and the mississaugas of the credit uh this land is now home to many diverse first nations inuit and metis people and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work here we remember and honor the legacy of the peoples who have been here before us and all who work to make the promise and the challenge of truth and reconciliation real i would like you to invite you to join me in taking a moment to reflect on the land that you were on i would now like to introduce dr ritz who will be speaking on the integration of sex and gender and research new advances and important considerations for basic and clinical research as in terms of her bio dr stacey ritz is an associate professor in the department of pathology and molecular medicine at mcmaster university after completing her phd in immunology at mcmaster and a postdoctoral fellowship at ucla she served as a faculty member at the northern ontario of medicine ontario school of medicine from 2005 to 2015 and returned to mcmaster in 2015 as the assistant dean of the bachelor of health sciences honors program her current scholarship focuses on the integration of sex and gender considerations into laboratory-based biomedical research and health research more broadly and critical literacy in health professional education so thank you for joining us today dr ritz and we look forward to your presentation thanks very much angela and thank you so much for the invitation to uh to join you today and to talk about this work that i feel so excited and passionate about um as you mentioned my my background is...
