hi there this is Jason Renshaw from English I tutor comm and the subject of this tutorial from TOEFL IBT V is TOEFL writing and the integrated essay in particular I'm going to be working with the example of the integrated task from my own TOEFL writing mentor system test 2 and I'm going to focus on taking notes from the reading passage with the integrated task now you've got to read a passage and you've got to listen to a lecture you've got to write a report that you know combines and integrates the information across those two sources and it's you know it's not an easy thing to do you're given a lot of information and that comes at you quite quickly so the ability to write a good integrated detailed report depends a lot on your ability to take effective notes so I'm going to look at the idea of taking notes from the reading passage to start with in this tutorial now let's say I look at some essential strategies first when you're given the reading passage in the integrated task here are a couple of strategies I'd like you to bear in mind one is to remember that you have three minutes to read the passage it's not a long passage and you do actually have plenty of time so the key strategy here is not to panic you will actually find that three minutes is actually plenty of time to really get a grip on that passage compared to the speaking tasks for example where you get such a limited reading amount of reading time this is actually a lot easier to handle the passage is longer but you do get a lot more time to read it so the first strategy is don't panic when you see that reading passage you've got plenty of time to sort of absorb it and take some notes about it the next strategy is basically to skim through the passage first you know to make sure you understand what it's generally about and then on your note paper you want to identify the main topic and two to three main ideas there'll be two to three supporting sort of main ideas or theories or or arguments that support that main topic so you want to jot these notes down first come briefly and with plenty of space between them on the paper on the left-hand side of your paper and I say left-hand side of your paper because then later when you want to take your lecture notes you're going to have space on the right-hand side of your paper to take those notes once you've identified your main topic and your main ideas then you can use the rest of your reading time to go back through the passage again and then you know more carefully try to write down some of the additional detail for each of those main ideas you identify and look the...
