[Music] okay tell me where do we start I'd like to start by talking about health and safety Health and Safety tell us this subject we cover it in these videos over and over again I can almost hear the groans out there so why is there such a need to keep reinforcing the message well Dave I've been an electrician since before man landed on the moon and it's an unfortunate fact that when you work with something like electricity day in day out year after year you start to take the danger introduces for granted and I've seen many a colleague work live just because they couldn't be bothered to take the time and going to isolate the supply yeah their comment work on or near live conductors is the subject of regulation 14 of the electricity of work regulations which basically requires that live working should be avoided unless it's unreasonable in all circumstances for the conductor to be dead and even then precautions such as a safe working procedure and personal protective equipment would have to be used I think it's fine quite in regulations to try and reinforce safe working but if I look back through my career I've known five electricians dead dead because although they switched it off someone else come along and switched it back on they simply did not lock off the supply correctly and there's experience talking at anytime during the installation process where there's the presence of a supply which needs to be disconnected it's important to follow the isolation procedure which has four simple steps step one is first check with the client or occupier that it's okay for the supply to be disconnected then switch off the supply and lock it off with a suitable device and place a warning notice step two requires that a suitable voltage detection instrument be checked using a proving unit unknown supply step three requires that the voltage detection instrument be used to check there's no dangerous voltage present any circuit conductor to be worked on this is done between earth and line neutral and line and then earth and neutral finally step four requires the voltage detecting instrument to be proved again and if it's still functioning correctly work can commence now I know that we're covering health and safety before we start inspecting and testing but it's important to remember that health and safety doesn't have a beginning or an end it applies to everything we do throughout the whole installation and inspection and testing process that's very true and whenever you work you may need to wear some form of personal protective equipment whether it's safety boots hardhat high-vis jacket safety goggles if it's required wear it if it gets damaged get a replacement
