modernizing the social security number and how it relates to better Athan occation of identity one of the things we've learned in the two or three decades we've been doing this is that the SSN a social security number is the crucial part of any identification system so we have a pretty full agenda today I think it'll be a fairly open discussion but the first remarks will come from congressman Sam Johnson who's the chairman of the House Committee on the Social Security subcommittee in the House Ways and Means Committee his bio is on the web I'm not gonna read it all because it's amazing I mean they told me there's nothing in there I can't say but the guy who set up director of Air Force Top Gun school that's amazing right so an incredible career a long service in the Congress and we're very pleased that he could make it here today sorry have you been in government for a while you're gonna walk around crazy good morning thank you for inviting me to be here today you know protecting Americans from identity theft is a top priority of mine as chairman of the Social Security subcommittee and has been for many years we all know Social Security numbers are key to someone's identity and that they are used for just about everything I guess you need one when you need one when you get a job you need one when you buy a house you need one when you open a credit card given all the ways we use Social Security numbers it's no wonder their valuable target for identity theft for a long time all we had to do was keep our social security numbers safe was to keep them secret with this in mind I've worked as a chairman to limit the use of Social Security numbers for example I'm proud to say military IDs no longer used Social Security numbers that's a real change even better thanks to a bill I got signed into law Medicare is now sending new cards to seniors cards that won't feature their social security number also I want to note that Congress passed a bill into law last year to require all federal agencies to stop mailing documents that contain Social Security numbers unless it's absolutely necessary these are great steps to protect folks from having their social security number stolen but as times have changed so have the tactics being used by identity theft thieves hundreds of millions of Social Security numbers have been lost in high-profile data breaches making it clear we can't count on these numbers being secret anymore and as we will hear today this is venez serious implication for being able to identify a person online make no mistake it's still important to limit the use of these numbers but if we want to keep up with the identity thieves we also need to go on the offensive and make these...
