do you know your six patient rights of medication administration hi my name is chance and I'm one of the nurse educators here at interesting G and today we're going to go over the six patient rights of medication administration number one the right patient you always want to make sure that you have the right patient when you're giving any sort of medication you want to use to patient identifiers you can use their name or their date of birth or even the medical record number check that against the electronic medical record or if you're using the old school paper charting make sure that you have the right patient every time number two make sure you always have the right medication you want to make sure that it's in the right formulation whether it's a pill or a capsule or even a liquid and make sure it's the right concentration that way you make sure that you're given the right medication to that patient number three make sure you have the right dose you want to check the medication administration record or the Mahr against the medication amount that you're going to give so if you have to give a half a tablet make sure that you're giving a half a tablet and then it's the right dose or if you have to give five mils make sure that the concentration and all the math adds up number four the right route anytime you're giving a medication you want to make sure that you're giving it the right route so what does that mean well if it's an OLE medication make sure you're giving it that way or if it's an IV medication make sure you're giving it in the IV catheter or if it needs to go in the muscle make sure the order is for an IM always make sure that that medication administration record reflects the right route for that medication number five the right time you want to make sure that anytime you give them medication that you're giving at the right time of day if you have a morning med you want to make sure that you're giving it if it's due at ten o'clock in the morning make sure you give it a ten you don't want to be giving you know one o'clock in the afternoon because then you're not giving it at the right time always check that medication administration record and make sure that you're giving it at the right time number six right documentation you want to make sure that all the documents are filled out correctly you want to make sure that any sort of medication that's ordered on the morrow or the medication administration record is signed by the provider you want to make sure that you have all the necessary components in that medication administration record including the patient's name the dose the Med all the other patient rights make sure that you are following all the necessary protocols to make your patients safe and a couple of bonus rights is it the right thing to do does giving this medication makes sense remember you or your patients advocate you want to make sure that you're doing the right thing for them so if your patient has a really little heart rate and you're going to give them a beta blocker to keep their blood pressure down is it the right thing to do always use your nursing judgment to do that and lastly your patient has a right to refuse as long as they can make their own medical decisions and they are of sound mind they can make those judgments always respect your patient's autonomy and that's your six patient rights of medication administration be sure to go over to NRS ng comm log on in and check out the cheat sheets that are associated with these six patient rights including many many others and like we always say go out and be your best selves today and as always happy nursing
