Mark jpeg

look at this photo no back to mine look at this photo now back to mine what's the difference I shot an draw hey what's up guys my name is Joshua near our ski I'm a photographer filmmaker and vlogger here on YouTube as well as Instagram and today we're back with episode 4 in my beginner camera tutorial series today we're gonna be talking all about shooting raw what are the pros what are the cons should you do it should you not what does it even mean we're gonna be talking about all that and more so let's get into it so when you're taking photos there are a few different formats you can shoot in but the most popular are JPEG and RAW so first let's talk about JPEG which is the file format that most of you have probably heard of before now JPEG is super basic you can take your photos you can share them online quickly send them to family and friends it's just nice clean and simple and you can have high quality photos that don't take up very much space if you buy a camera it'll probably default to this if you take pictures on your phone it's also going to default to this it's just easy to use it gets the job done and then on the other end of the spectrum we have raw which is what most if not all professional photographers shoot in but remember that doesn't mean you have to so one of the big disadvantages to shooting raw is the file sizes are massive even on my mid-range DSLR which is a Canon a TD every single photo takes around 30 to 40 megabytes this means that storing these photos on your computer is gonna take a lot of space you're gonna need big SD cards for your camera and it even gets worse than that the other weekend I borrowed some pictures of me that were taken on a friend's Sony a7r 3 which is a full-frame camera it takes massive pictures and every photo they sent me was like 80 megabytes and I think they said it wasn't even on the highest resolution so these photos really can take up a lot of space on top of that you actually can't post these photos online without converting them to a JPEG or other format first and sometimes you can't even view them on your computer without putting them through a program like Adobe Lightroom or something similar but there is a reason for this aside from just flexing on how big your files are and for the big reveal the reason is editing when you take a photo in the RAW format it preserves a ton more data than a simple JPEG which allows you to edit the photo later stuff like shadows highlights which we'll probably talk about in a later video there's a ton of detail retaining them when you shoot and raw and you can pull out that detail in post to edit to your liking when you take a picture in RAW you can actually edit the colors edit the details the sharpness the clarity the contrast all of that without having a huge degrade and quality of your picture on the other hand if you shooting JPEG you really don't want to edit your pictures very much I mean you can do slight adjustments but the more you edit a JPEG the worse it's gonna look and that's because a JPEG essentially already has a preset on it when you're shooting JPEG you're essentially saying this is the photo I want I don't want to touch it this is the final product when you shoot in RAW you're saying okay I want this photo but I haven't quite decided how I want it to look so I'm just gonna preserve as much data as possible and I'll change how it looks later now back when I first got a DSLR I actually didn't like the idea of editing photos it sounded kind of fake sort of like cheating it actually didn't sit well with me have you ever seen one of those videos where they Photoshop like a slice of pizza into a model that's what I felt like if I did anything but touch the contrast and maybe the saturation but one thing that sort of changed this mindset for me was the fact that your camera doesn't always capture an image correctly sometimes it's gonna be too dark sometimes it's gonna be too bright sometimes your skin is gonna look orange sometimes it's gonna look blue so at the very least realize that your camera captures colors incorrectly all the time so editing basic corrections should be fine for most people at least for me personally if I take a picture on something like my galaxy s7 smartphone doesn't matter where it is the saturation is so high Green's look like lime green it just doesn't look true to life and like why sometimes your camera's gonna get unrealistic colors as well and nowadays editing photos is just as fun for me as taking them it's just so creatively fulfilling to have an idea and then take the image and then work on it in post to get it to look however you want last week a friend actually took a picture of me swimming in a fog like it looked awesome here's the photo but it was a tad overexposed thankfully though because they shot in raw I could darken it a little bring out some details edit it to my liking make it a little more dramatic and here's the final result again here's the before here's the after so if you just want to capture photos toss them on the internet maybe family gatherings Facebook Instagram don't really want to touch them don't want to be an artist JPEG is gonna be your best friend well actually I take that back I don't want to say shooting JPEG doesn't make you an artist in fact that's probably a style of photography I don't want to hate on it but if you're shooting for clients you want to be creative you want full control over the types of images you capture it's gonna take more time you're gonna have to process images it's gonna take up more space but raw is gonna be your best friend if you shooting Ron you edit those photos over time you're gonna develop a style people are actually gonna be able to recognize your photos without seeing your name attached it's really a cool thing anyways now that you know the difference between JPEG and RAW hopefully you can decide which one is best for you maybe you want to alternate between them I actually do this sometimes either way I'm just glad this video can hopefully help you out a little as always if you like the video be sure to like it if you have any questions how many comments hit up that comment section down below and if you want to see more content like this consider subscribing to the channel thanks again for watching my name's Josh when you're ski check me out on
