Digisign professional physical therapy consent template

on this episode of the ask Mike Reynolds show we talk about whether or not you should consider doing a post professional residency or fellowship the ask Mike Reinhold show helping people feel better move better and perform better [Music] welcome back everybody the latest episode the ass micron old show we're up at champion PT and performance up in Boston Lenny Macrina Dave Tilley Dan and Pope we're answering your questions we got another episode where episode that's applause so pepper sowed we have another another episode where we want to tackle one big question because we get this question a ton right so you know on this one we want to speak you know a little bit more direct again on one main topic because we get this question probably you know four times a month right to stop something yeah so we maybe will elaborate a little bit more and you guys will stop asking knobs yeah I know maybe well you know elaborate a little bit more and kind of have this as some like pillar and content that you guys can like kind of go back to down the road you know so we can we can you know really spend some more time elaborating on this question so our students today we have Alicia Noah's Ark Angelo from the University of st. Francis [Laughter] and ER kpop Kirschbaum from the University of Auckland says nothing to the California and a Brian Winkler from the University of Delaware winks we're gonna take this one wings absolutely we get up buddy should I do a post professional residency or fellowship like you personally is that your question or the question you got no chance yeah all right so a great question is should we probably don't need the students asking so it should as a physical nervous should I do a post professional fellowship or residency so when I'm in day job who just sick I know we have answered this a couple times been a couple different ways let's make this like complete right so students has your schools talk to you about post professional resident ease or fellowships and what what are they saying was the silence is definite did you guys coordinate because you guys match in our movies so is anyone are your universities talking about these are they pushing you in one way or they're recommending one way I would say ours isn't pushy about I think they're more just trying to say like explore the areas that you're interested in and kind of check and see what's out there and get familiar with other concepts that are that are out there to learn from I like it what about you Winx you guys actually have a good program in Delaware yeah yes we have a with beat again sports residency program we also have a neuro program in an acute care residency program so they definitely present us with all the options but it's again they kind of just say like you know here's your options pick and choose like what you're interested in they're not too pushy about like you need to do this but we do get good experience with the residents so we can kind of see like what the Presidents Day is like and make an informed decision that's pretty cool Alicia what about you guys what you guys do at USF University University of st. Francis recently diversifier st. Francis there's a person sometimes aren't the University of Saint Francis has sports north though but yeah I mean we talked about it and they say it's there if you are really I don't like one kind of track [Music] I mean if they say it's a good thing you know kind of a fast-track type thing what's your percentage do you estimate in your clasp like your classmates will have talked about it in our highly pursuing it just curious for than 50 percent yeah 50 is it 25 I was like 15 I know at Oakland we also have like an orthopedic manual physical therapy it's not necessarily a fellowship urn or whatnot but I would say about 25 percent of my class is at least highly considering you're pretty high yeah yeah about you Winx I think a lot of people my class have considered it I don't know where everyone is right now call you say hi like that yeah I think I've considered it I don't know who is you know applying right I think the big decision is for a lot of my classmates like should I work a couple years and then try and do a residency or is it more beneficial than see right out of school I think that's kind of I think everyone kind of thinks like a residency if you really want to be specialized in one area I think it's a you know they realize it's a good thing but the question is should I do it now and like where I've been experience a kin the day you had to have a certain amount of hours before you apply you know I definitely think that's going away I definitely had a mix in my class I mean we had one of my classmates of the year but we went to Delaware's residency and then in my class I've had this I've said the same an it's like four times with my best friend Joe Myron like he knew right away he was like sports NFL I'm going for like I want it so he went to pro access and he loved his residence he thought it was amazing and then our buddy Seth Oberst also to like write at a school did it I didn't financially think that I had the situation to do that but I also wanted to work and I really wanted to coach and I had other stuff I wanted to do and I think my biggest reason was that I didn't want to be again tunnel-visioned in their program that's what I got from feedback from the residency the people who are in the residence before was like it was good I learned a lot but I was very much like getting a fire hose of one thought point of view and I had to read these articles and I had to go to this class and I didn't know if I wanted to do that I wanted to be like kind of explore my options and I think that was financially for me that made more sense but also I think that was one of the early benefits that I had is that I was learning from pain science and then York in somebody else if amendment kins I had no like thing I had to learn and I think that helped me be more diverse when I was a younger clinician and then I was like okay gymnastics you know cross what stuff I really want to do this I went back and did my I didn't at home study for two years and I thought it was great I did in my own time I took me longer but I didn't on the weekends I did at nights it wasn't like I had to go like the class every day I could still make money yeah I think what Dave said is important I actually considered doing a residency out of school I just ended up following my wife it's probably better to know residency so we got divorced shortly after good good but anyway I think that the residency I do agree that it it probably puts you on a bit of a fast track right but it depends on where you actually go right so if you're in a residency where they're practicing with the athletes that you like right you've seen the type of patients you like really saw mentors you agree with the mentors are saying to match that's all really good and I can't really speak completely to the residency because I haven't gone to it but I have heard the same thing so we've had some people say like I really like the residency some people have said no I haven't liked it that much that being said I think it really depends on what you want to learn about and that's tough because when you first graduate you don't really know so maybe that residency is good for you to get some experience and figure out where to go the other thing is like I love fitness and I love like CrossFit Powell to let the weight looking and there's no residency for that you know but I kind of developed my own residency in a way so when I graduated I coached right and then I worked at across the gyms I started experimenting I start seeing a lot his patients I had a mentor locally that saw a lot of CrossFit athletes I got involved with Power monkey fitness I'm I'm working with some of the best coaches in the world I'm doing all the lifts myself you know and I'm seeking out great mentors like you guys too so I feel like in a lot of ways I did my own residency right I kind of cultivated the individual experience that I really wanted you know so what I will say is that I don't know that you should feel pressure to do a residency just because it's the next step it probably is very helpful and I would also could consider doing a fellowship in the future but I think you have to figure out what you want and you can make that specific experience happen if you're willing to put the work in Haeckel right we're all telling our own stories I think I have a similar very similar story so I think Mike's the only person that has a fellowship out of all of us yeah and I kind of thought of it as a I didn't die I don't know if I'd consider going out of leaving PT school I don't remember but I thought of going to Birmingham as like my I'm gonna do two years in Alabama I'm gonna work with Kevin and my doctor Andrews and that whole group I'm gonna get I'm gonna do a two-year Lenny certification Eleni fellowship but whatever we're gonna call that a certificate more than that but I think we all have a similar thought where we all did our own you know we were all actively learning on our own and I'm necessarily in in a program in it I think it's kind of worked out some ways say for all of us yeah you know some Dan said in his his little reply there I thought really struck me he's met some people that really liked it and some people that really didn't and you know that tells me if you didn't like it that you probably did it for the wrong reason right and I think we find that a lot I feel like we had a little period here at champion where a bunch of students came through so I'm glad you guys answered that well I thought you guys did a good answer we had a bunch of students come in and be like well I mean I'm trying to figure out which residency I want to go to I'm like all right you know why like what's your thought process well you know I just my school really thinks I should do a residency and in my mind I'm thinking like they think like he needs specific work you know like like why why they choose him and I'm like well tell me what's your end game and he's like from the middle of nowhere in the middle of the country or something like that you know whatever and he's just like well you know I was just always envision you know I'll just go working like an outpatient clinic like in my hometown I think that would be really great it would really have like a good life I'm like that's amazing you think you need a residency for that like what why would you go then what do you want to do the residency for and I feel like we had a couple of a couple of like tears of students one they were being like excessively pushed by their schools maybe a little bit then we had another tear that I thought they were just looking into it for lack of self confidence and that's I think that's the big one I want to like help the most with this is it's look everybody's graduating school with low self confidence in your everybody is right so you don't need to go to do that as Dan said well I think everybody else kind of said it too is you definitely are going to accelerate how fast you go right and I think you're gonna learn a ton more in a shorter amount of time right but I think you can you can have some self-directed learning opportunities like we kind of mentioned but I also think just with time and reps you're gonna get there anyway and I don't want you to go do a residency because of a lack of self confidence in your skill set or your ability to help people everybody is in that boat you will get better try to find a place with good mentorship and a place where you can learn and I think that will do really good for you now there is one more benefit from a residency or fellowship that I found and this is part of my here is that it opens the door for you with relationships right so you know I did my fellowship with Kevin will you know he's a mentor a great friend of mine now like I mean we still collaborate on things together and he opens so many doors for me to get into research to get into education to get into pro sports right so many doors that that was open but remember he opened those doors I stepped through the door right if you're looking to be spoon-fed things you're not gonna get that from a residency either right you have to go there and take advantage of it they may give you opportunities but if you don't take them this isn't just gonna magically come because a lot of people say do I need to do a residency to get into pro sports well just because you do residency doesn't mean you will get into pro sports you know I guess that's like a flip way of saying or we also know a lot who did not get a residency in our improv and a lot of people that are quite successful you know I don't think you're gonna make more money in this world right you know you may or may not get a better job I betcha there's a ton of clinics they could care less if you did a residency right so it's has to come down to your objectives don't do it for the wrong reasons are you gonna have a poor experience like Dan concept right you're gonna have somebody that didn't quite like it you know make sure you're doing it for the right reasons because you have an end game in mind and this helps you get to that end game so you have a roadmap of where you want to get to and you've put the pieces together and this fits that room right yeah I think my last parting pieces I think the times have changed significantly the way education is delivered not profession - 15 years ago as my professors told me like that was the gatekeeper if you wanted to learn about Neurology you had to go find a program that taught neurology I think now I got thing of my experience I learned a quarter of my sports stuff like your guys online courses for the elbow and the shoulder that I didn't have access to I don't think now you're at that gatekeeper model we're like everything's online more stuff's available you I don't know if you need to go to like that one spot to learn it all no that's impressive you learned that from us that's how I got my job here man because I need the elbow and I was like well all courses are written by Mike on the elbow a champion in shadow glioma okay yeah I mean look you can do a ton on your own right residency certainly helped you know so I think we're all Pro residency's but I think we're you know we've seen quite a few people that were considering them for the wrong reasons so hopefully this episode helps right hopefully you can take a step back and think about maybe what your reasons are and if a residency fits that model because I'll get me wrong you probably have some debt right you probably have some student loans right probably not gonna get paid 100% to go do this fellowship or residency he's probably gonna move to another place right and have to pay some rent and get some furniture or something like that you know what I mean like this isn't a no-brainer for you there's a lot of successful people that haven't done this so don't feel like you need to but if this fits your career projections then it could be an amazing opportunity for you nice awesome great great episode thank you so much another great question head to my chronic comp
