oh this is dr grande today's question asks if i can analyze the mental health and personality factors that may be at work in the mark david chapman case chapman is the person who killed john lennon on december 8 1980. just a reminder of not diagnosing anybody in this video only speculating about what could be happening in a situation like this if you enjoyed this video please like it subscribe to my channel and consider supporting me on patreon i'll put the link to patreon in the description for this video so here i'll go through the background of chapman move to the crime and then look at the mental health and personality factors so starting with the background mark david chapman was born in fort worth texas on may 10 1955 his mother was a nurse and his father was in the air force his father was cold and distant toward him and abusive toward his mother the family moved to georgia when chapman was still fairly young chapman used to rock back and forth a lot in his crib and in other places this continued until he was 12 years old growing up he had fantasies about having dominion over a colony of little people who he believed lived in the walls now many children have fantasies it's really hard to know when they may indicate a problem at age nine chapman's intelligence was tested his iq was 121 so this is over a standard deviation above the mean so this is quite a high level of intelligence he started using drugs at an early age including marijuana cocaine heroin lsd and other assorted substances he also started missing school and he ran away from home for two weeks at one point even though chapman did not have a criminal record before he killed john lennon he did spend one night in jail after using an excessive quantity of lsd while in high school he worked at a ymca as a summer camp counselor and was well regarded by the children even winning an outstanding counselor award at some point chapman read the novel the catcher in the rye by j.d salinger and he really connected with the protagonist in that book holden caufield chapman moved to chicago and played guitar in various places related to his christian faith then he worked at a resettlement camp in arkansas helping vietnamese refugees people reported that he really seemed to care for the children there he enrolled in college in georgia but would drop out after just one semester he reported having excessive guilt about an affair and he had thoughts about bringing an end to his own life after briefly working at the resettlement camp again he left after failing to get along with some people there he took a job as a security guard and after this he moved to hawaii when he was there he attempted to end his life by running a vacuum cleaner hose from the tailpipe of his car into one of his windows the exhaust melted the hose he was submitted to the hospital and treated for clinical depression after that he started working at that hospital chapman went on a trip to multiple destinations around the world in 1978 visiting places like hong kong tokyo singapore paris london geneva and dublin when chapman was 22 years old he became romantically involved with a 26 year old woman named gloria abe she was his travel agent she arranged that whole trip they would marry in june of 1979 he took a job at the same hospital where he worked before they fired him he was rehired then he quit after getting into an argument with a nurse after this he went back to work as a security guard around this time he increased his consumption of alcohol and would become fixated on john lennon he started thinking of himself as holden caulfield from the catcher in the rye a character that despised a lack of genuineness he started to grow hostile toward john lennon and his obsessions continued to ramp up in 1966 john lennon made a statement that the beatles were more popular than jesus that statement in particular enraged chapman as he considered it to be blasphemy chapman also wasn't a big fan of the song imagine believing that lenin was hypocritical for promoting love and peace while being wealthy he thought it was just a scam lenin was encouraging people to have no possessions then laughing at people who paid for the music to hear that message chapman started developing plans to kill john lennon lennon was just one possible target for chapman though he really just wanted to kill somebody famous he had a number of other potential targets like ronald reagan george c scott johnny carson elizabeth taylor and paul mccartney in october of 1980 chapman traveled to new york with the intention of killing john lennon when he was there he saw the film ordinary people starring mary tyler moore and donald sutherland which apparently convinced him to discontinue his murder plans that was a good movie it's interesting that this changed his mind albeit temporarily perhaps chapman empathized with the protagonists to that movie because that protagonist really suffered quite a bit in that film after this chapman flew back to hawaii and told his wife that he planned to kill lenin even showing her the firearm and the cartridges he was going to use she took no action after the murder chapman would say that he had resentment toward his wife for not contacting the police or anyone else who could have helped him chapman made an appointment to see a mental health professional but he missed that appointment and traveled to new york in december of 1980. on december 7 chapman approached the singer james taylor at a subway station and pushed him against the wall while speaking erratically he talked about how he was interested in getting in touch with john lennon now moving to december 8 the day of the murder chapman bought a copy of the catcher in the rye signed it to holden caulfield from holden caulfield and wrote this is my statement so this was supposed to be a statement to the police he wasn't planning on talking to them after he committed the murder he then went to the entrance of the dakota apartment building where john lennon lived he spoke to the doorman and fans who were hoping to see john lennon lennon exited a cab and walked into the dakota but chapman did not see him because he was distracted while chapman was waiting for another opportunity to kill lennon he saw a number of other celebrities including paul simon mia farrow gilda radner and lauren bacall lennon and his wife yoko ono left the dakota to go to a recording session at about 5 pm they were walking toward their limousine when chapman approached lenin holding a copy of the album double fantasy lennon signed the album a photographer named paul garesh took a picture of that encounter lennon and yoko owner returned from their trip at about 10 50 pm they exited the limousine and walked past chapman toward the entrance of the dakota chapman produced a charter arms five shot 38 caliber revolver and fired all five shots four struck lenin in the back and shoulder lennon would be pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital after being transported there in a police car a charter arms 38 was also the firearm that phil hartman's wife used to kill him in 1998 chapman said that he was in a state of shock after he shot lennon a doorman grabbed his hand and simply shook it and the gun fell out the doorman kicked it across the ground telling chapman what have you done get out of here go away chapman started reading the catcher and the rye i find it interesting that no one was worried about a second weapon after all chapman had just mortally wounded john lennon perhaps this was a testament to how chapman didn't seem to fit the stereotype of a killer everybody was surprised that somebody like chapman would have committed that crime when the police arrived chapman was arrested without incident he was charged with second-degree murder even though first-degree murder would have made more sense given the circumstances chapman would end up pleading guilty even though his attorney advised him to plead not guilty by reason of insanity chapman said they had been told to plead guilty by god and he would never change his plea or appeal his case no matter what sentence he received chapman was found competent to plead guilty so his plea was accepted and he was sentenced to 20 years to life the judge could have sentenced him 25 years to life at the time of making this video he has been denied parole 10 times i doubt he's ever going to get out of prison other than in rejecting his application the parole board has not been consistent it's like they come up with a new reason each time for the rejection they said he would be in danger if he was released he would be a danger to others he was evil the murder was calculated he was likely to reoffend then he said he wasn't likely to reoffend but he selected someone who was famous and that really seemed to bother them i think with a case like this it's likely they've just checked out like they're saying oh this guy again just tell him anything so we can get out of here right i don't think they have any intention of ever releasing him now moving to the mental health and personality factors chapman was assessed by a number of mental health professionals and subjected to 200 hours of interviews prior to his trial six of the mental health professionals worked for the defense three for the prosecution and there were others who were court appointed in theory those experts would be independent and unbiased five of the six mental health professionals for the defense diagnosed chapman with paranoid schizophrenia but all of them said he was psychotic the sixth expert said he had bipolar disorder so they were all saying he was not responsible for the crime the experts for the prosecution went with personality disorders but still said that chapman was delusional they thought his delusions did not quite meet the definition for psychosis the court-appointed mental health professional said that chapman was delusional so we seem to have a lot of agreement around the idea of delusions some mental health advocates believe that chapman should have never been allowed to plead guilty to murder he actually had a pretty good case with the insanity defense that strategy is rarely successful but it certainly gave him a better chance than pleading guilty by pleading guilty there was a hundred percent chance he would be convicted with an insanity defense he might have had about a 90 percent chance of a conviction considering the circumstances in his case there was a lot of evidence pointing toward psychosis what's amazing in this case is that the mental health experts for the prosecution had to admit that chapman was in fact delusional now they said he was delusional but not psychotic as i mentioned which of course doesn't make any sense if somebody is delusional then by definition they are psychotic now of course all these constructs are on a continuum so one could make the argument that somebody can move up in terms of delusional thinking but not really be fully delusional and i think this is what the prosecution mental health experts were getting at with certain personalities we do see fixed false beliefs that don't really seem to rise to the level of a delusion it's important to remember though that they said he was delusional they didn't say he was on his way to becoming delusional like saying he had odd or bizarre thinking that didn't qualify as a delusion now it's worth noting that there were some difficulties with some of these mental health professionals one lied about having a doctorate and would go to prison for four months on a related perjury charge one promised that she wouldn't say anything on the stand that chapman didn't want her to and another used to bring in briefcases full of the book the catcher and the rye so that chapman would autograph them none of these experts was in danger of winning the ethical mental health professional of the year award all the mental health professionals agreed that chapman was forthright consistent and they agreed he was not malingering this is pretty much the most favorable outcome that chapman could have hoped for in a case like this to have all the defense mental health experts say paranoid schizophrenia to have all the independent experts say he was delusional and to have the prosecution experts admit he was delusional even if they were diagnosing him with personality disorders i have to agree with the mental health advocates who were surprised that the judge permitted chapman to plead guilty we don't know what the outcome of the trial would have been but he certainly should have been allowed to present his case if he was delusional as everyone said he was then it's hard to imagine he was competent to waive his right to a jury trial and plead guilty so outside the court proceeding what was happening with chapman how did this psychotic behavior lead to the murder of john lennon in looking at the materials that focus on chapman's state of mind it appears as though his psychosis started when he was young and was never effectively treated he wasn't just psychotic he was depressed as well and of course we see the substance use on top of that the way chapman describes his behavior it's almost like he was driven to kill he knew that what he was doing was wrong and unacceptable but it was like he was on autopilot he almost seemed obsessive like he was trying to use a compulsion to satisfy an obsessive thought he said part of him wanted to get out of there but at the same time he heard his own voice repeatedly saying the words do it during that point when john lennon was signing chapman's album chapman said he was nervous like he was excited to meet someone as famous as john lennon it doesn't really seem like rage was the motive in this homicide the psychotic element is clear as well when john lennon started signing the album he said the chapman is that all you wanted and chapman took that to mean that john lennon knew that he was going to be murdered interestingly chapman also said he was overwhelmed by john lennon's sincerity so it's interesting that chapman kind of stretched that statement that lenin made is that all you wanted to believe that lenin knew that he was going to be murdered this is a relatively normal statement in that situation lenin probably said that because chapman had an unusual expression on his face he was just standing there doing nothing or something like that so really chapman's behavior may have caused that response from lenin other than the depression and the psychosis chapman said that he was too sensitive throughout his life he had a lot of aggression built up he did not feel respected he thought that nobody cared about him and he would worry about little things that happened to him for several days he believed that there was a conspiracy of wealthy people who ruled the world and of course he had that delusion about the little people in the walls except as he grew older they were no longer in the situation where he was the king and they were subjects rather they were in a democracy where chapman was the present they even had committees like we would see in congress so looking at chapman's potential personality profile we see that he had a high level of openness to experience he was intellectually curious he went through a phase where he bought a lot of art he was adventurous he invested in fantasy heavily and he was creative for conscientiousness we see a low level he was impulsive careless and immature chapman's behavior is consistent with mid-range to low extroversion many described him as friendly although perhaps not outgoing he wasn't assertive and he had few positive emotions as far as agreeableness his level was high for the most part he tended to trust people although he did obviously not trust that whole conspiracy and he didn't trust certain famous people he thought of himself as altruistic and he did appear to have empathy at least at certain points in his life as far as neuroticism his level was high he was depressed anxious angry and vulnerable so i want to answer one last question and that is should chapman be released i talked about how the parole board has denied him 10 times in 20 years there's no way to go back and explore if an insanity defense would have been effective so we're just left with what he did and what we think may be going on with the delusions and other mental health factors he did commit a murder it was planned in advance again even though he was charged with second-degree murder in addition to the fact that he committed murder there are a number of other reasons he should not be released one of them is how he was able to kill john lennon even after lenin was nothing but kind to him in that brief interaction before the murder that kindness was delivered with the sincerity that even impressed chapman regardless of any mental health issues it's difficult to believe that the public would ever be safe from somebody who could kill under those circumstances we see somebody who experienced a kindness he looked at lennon he saw lennon sign the album he realized lennon was being genuine and kind to him and he still was able just a few hours later to shoot him in the back that type of behavior can never be acceptable and it shows a real disconnect from how people relate to one another it's one thing if he had murdered somebody who had done something terrible to him that wouldn't make it right but that's different than what he did he murdered somebody that went out of his way to be kind those are my thoughts on mark david chapman please put any opinions and thoughts in the comments section they always generate an interesting dialogue as always i hope you found my analysis of this topic to be interesting thanks for watching
