[Music] oh [Music] my god of creation [Music] all of ours [Music] for your peace [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god the communion of the holy spirit be always with you good morning wherever you are joining us in prayer this gorgeous morning here in florida it's good to be with you in prayer on this third sunday of ordinary time pope francis invites the entire church to celebrate a sunday of the word of god he asks us to set aside a moment to reflect on the power of the gospel message for every living being in today's celebration we hear jesus calling the first disciples from the life they had known to a different life so too does jesus invite us to follow him even though we may not always understand where he is leading us as we continue on our journey of faith we are called to turn our whole being mind and heart toward the lord for the kingdom of god is here among us today now for those times we have been too busy and distracted to hear god's word we pause to ask his mercy and his forgiveness lord jesus you call us to leave every leave everything behind and follow you lord have mercy lord have mercy christ jesus you call ordinary people of every place and nation to be your disciples christ have mercy and lord jesus you call us today to meet you in word and sacrament lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to life everlasting let us thou sing of glory to our god in the highest [Music] we glorify you we give you thanks for [Music] peace [Music] have mercy take on the sins of the world [Music] please [Music] jesus with the christ spirit [Music] let us pray almighty ever living god direct our actions according to your good pleasure that in the name of your beloved son we may always abound in good works and we ask this through that same jesus your son who lives and reigns with you forever and ever see a reading from the book of the prophet jonah the word of the lord came to jonah saying set out for the great city of nineveh and announce to it the message that i will tell you so jonah made ready and went to nineveh according to the lord's bidding now nineveh was an enormously large city it took three days to go through it jonah began his journey through the city and had gone but a single day's walk announcing forty days more and nineveh shall be destroyed when the people of nineveh believed god they proclaimed a fast and all of them great and small put on sackcloth when god saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them he did not carry it out the word of the lord [Music] to you oh god i lift up my soul lift up my spirit to my lord to you i lift up my soul to you o god i lift up my soul lift up my spirit to my lord to you i lift up my soul make me to know your ways oh god teach me you are my safety [Music] to you i lift up [Music] just [Music] lift up my spirit to my [Music] oh god [Music] with my [Music] to you i lift up my soul [Music] to you i lift up my soul a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians i tell you brothers and sisters the time is running out from now on let those having wives act as not having them those weeping as not weeping those rejoicing as not rejoicing those buying as not owning those using the world as not fully using it fully for the world in its present form is passing away the word of the lord [Music] if today you hear the voice of god listen and receive the joy of the lord [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark after john had been arrested jesus came to galilee proclaiming the gospel of god this is the time of fulfillment the kingdom of god is at hand repent and believe in the gospel as he passed by the sea of galilee he saw simon and his brother andrew casting their nets into the sea they were fishermen jesus said to them come after me and i will make you fishers of men then they abandoned their nets and followed him he walked along a little farther and saw james the son of zebedee and his brother john they too were in a boat mending their nets then he called them so they left their father zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him the gospel of the lord praise jesus jesus christ one thing i've learned over the last five or six months when talking to people about the pandemic it seems like there are some who will tell you that time has just stood still for them life is like being in the movie groundhog day where every day is the same day after day and then there are those who will tell you that despite the pandemic time has gone by very quickly it's monday it's friday doesn't seem that long ago it was christmas and now we're almost into february but no matter how the pandemic has impacted you time is something that we are all conscious of something that we are all aware of in our everyday lives we know what time we need to get up every day with time to be at work with time to be ready for school with time to come to church and yes what time the football games are later today time is something that we are reminded of on a regular basis it's in our homes in our microwaves on our tvs our computers our phones and in our cars and the greeks had a word for this type of time and the word was kronos that's where we get the word chronology from or chronological but they also had a word for a different type of time and that word was kairos and that time isn't really about something we mark with a calendar or with a clock but more about a time of opportunity it's the right time it's the right season for something to happen for us to do something an example of that might be if you find yourself putting a little bit more money into your car than you would like then you might say perhaps it's time to invest in a new vehicle or during your annual physical your doctor tells you that you've put on a few pounds and your blood pressure is a little high then you might say perhaps now is the time to eat a little healthier and become more active this kairos time of opportunity is something that we hear in each of the readings this morning in the first reading god tells jonah it is time to go to the city of nineveh and tell them to change their ways in the second reading paul in his letter to the corinthians tells them that time is running out the advent of the second coming is near and in the gospel we hear jesus say the time of fulfillment is upon us repent and believe in the gospel now if we look at each of these readings a little bit more closely we'll find that this time of opportunity that is being mentioned all has a similar theme and that theme is it's a time to be called in a time for conversion if we go back to that first reading the city of nineveh the people of nineveh were enemies of the people of israel and they were living very sinful lives and god in his mercy tells jonah look go to the city of nineveh and preach repentance and if the people repent i'll save them if they don't they'll be destroyed and so jonah does that and the people do repent and god saves them so the call was to the people of nineveh the conversion was about turning away from sin in the second reading in paul's letter to the corinthians he's telling them that look paul like many believe that the second coming of christ would be sooner rather than later and he was telling them look time is running out we need to change the way we live we need to remove ourselves detach ourselves from the things of this world and focus more on the kingdom of heaven so the call was to the people of corinth and the conversion was about getting closer and moving closer toward god and then in our gospel jesus we hear how jesus calls his disciples and so the call was to peter and andrew and john and james and the conversion was about doing the work of god jesus tells them come and follow me and i will make you fishers of men come do my work now if we look at the gospel more closely we'll also see some additional meaning there and so if we think about where does jesus go to call his disciples he doesn't call them from a mountaintop he doesn't call them from a monastery he calls them right where they are in their everyday lives he meets them in the everyday moments of their lives we hear how some are mending their nets and some are casting their nets and that's where jesus goes you know there's people who will say that in most religions it's about people seeking god but in christianity it's about god seeking us and then if we look at how quickly the disciples responded they didn't ask a lot of questions they didn't say well how long are we going to be gone and exactly what are we going to be doing and did you did you say how much we would be getting paid for this there was and they didn't say well you know what come back in a month and we'll think about it and we'll have our your answer there was no contract to review or sign they simply followed christ and you have to ask yourself why and the answer is simple is because god called them in their heart it was a call to their heart and in their heart they knew that this was the right thing to do and in their heart they knew it was the right time to do it you know we have such a beautiful example such a beautiful model of this call and conversion right here in our church each and every year through our rcia program when you talk to our candidates and our catechumens and you ask them why have you decided to become catholic why have you made this decision to become full members of our church community most of them will say they've thought about it for a while but suddenly they felt like this was the right time to do it and it wasn't that god finally spoke to their heart it was probably because they finally heard god's voice and for some their conversion is about changing the way they live and for others it's about wanting to become closer to god and still for others it's about wanting to do god's work so our three readings today remind us that god is always with us he meets us in the everyday moments of our lives to quote the well-known benediction from the late robert schuller god is with us in our rising up and are lying down and are going out and are coming in in our labor and in our leisure in our laughter and in our tears and as god walks with us every day he is constantly calling us constantly speaking to our heart asking us to convert yes sometimes to turn away from sin let's face it we all stray off the road of righteousness now and then we all tend to get our priorities a little mixed up and so perhaps god does call us to come back and reconcile and be one with him and sometimes he just calls us into a deeper more meaningful relationship through prayer through scripture through the sacraments but always always god calls us to do his work to be his hands and feet to be christ to others in small things which make a big difference and so as we leave today let us remember that god's presence is always with us in everyday moments of our lives let us live our life in a way where our hearts are always open so we hear the voice of god and when he calls let us respond quickly like the disciples so that after we respond we never hear god say to us well it's about time so i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church communion of saints forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen we now turn to the father who has through his son chosen us to be the messengers of his word in our world in our time with the entire church we offer our prayers for the needs of this community and for our whole human family for all of us gathered here that touched by the spirit and transformed by the word we have heard that we may commit ourselves with joy to living out the gospel in our daily lives we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for president biden and vice president harris as they take up the difficult work of governing and for our leaders in business and media that they may be blessed with the vision and courage needed to move our divided nation toward justice unity and peace for all people we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those christ calls to be his disciples may they have the courage to accept the call and to act on behalf of others especially those who are most vulnerable we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the poor the hungry the unemployed and no suffering from the cold of winter may their needs be relieved by the support and love of caring people and communities we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the sick and their caregivers for those who have died for those who have died in this pandemic and for those who have died in service to their country and for those who mourn we pray to the lord lord hear our for all who have asked for our prayers for those who are most need of our prayers today and for the silent intentions in our hearts we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god of eternal love and light you've given us jesus as your incarnate word hear our humble prayers and grant us the grace and the courage to proclaim your gospel and witness to it by the way we live we ask this through christ our lord please join in singing we are many parts [Music] we are many [Music] we are given to share [Music] when the love that we share what our hope is we would be let us we are to share may the spirit of love [Music] that [Music] pray now my brothers and sisters that your sacrifice and mine may be acceptable to god the almighty father accept our offerings oh lord we pray and in sanctifying them granted they may profit us for salvation we ask this through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god that's right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and every word to give you thanks thought holy father almighty and eternal god for we know it belongs to your boundless glory that you came to the aid of mortal beings with your divinity and even fashioned for us a remedy out of mortality itself that the cause of our downfall might become the means of our salvation through christ your son and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing him of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] in the house you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy there for these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat it this is my body which would be given up for you similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death [Music] again [Music] when we eat this [Music] until [Music] therefore as we celebrate this memorial his passion and death we offer you lord the bread of life the chalice of salvation giving thanks that have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope john our bishop the clergy the people of god especially those gathered with us in prayer this morning remember also our brothers and sisters our loved ones so far asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us the lord and with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god sent joseph her spouse the blessed apostles say stephen and all the saints have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to return to life may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and informed by divine teaching we dare to say our father right in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come i will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be free from sin and safe from all useless anxiety as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ kingdom and the power and the glory are yours now forever lord jesus you said to your apostles and you say to us i leave you peace peace is my gift to you look not in our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace newest member of our community who was baptized last night olivia jacqueline dad you're a big moment well both of you you both had something to do with this congratulations up very good and they came back to church today that's pretty that's pretty amazing it's wonderful lord will be able to be here next sunday morning if those of you can help with that gift of life please keep that in mind youth continues to be active as you can imagine to help big time night now is rent assistance and utilities expensive items for families in need we are waiting further details on three families that are in crisis right now that we'll be helping this week but one of our social workers gave us a wonderful story of two of the families that we helped at christmas with a good number of gift cards those two families then went and shared those gift cards with two other families how about that good stuff um interested in becoming catholic and learning more about the catholic faith that father george and myself know are called mabel at the office during the week um good news father george and i got our second vaccine yesterday and we're still upright believe it or not so we're we're good [Applause] i know i i would i would claim evelyn but evelyn says he's the same too for 50 years huh that's great as seriously the wonderful people ask the lord's blessing on them as they continue their journey father continue to walk with them as they give so much to you and this community and so many others by their generous service continue to walk with them keep them healthy and safe and well this day
