it's kiana and i'm a certified professional biller and aapc approved instructor and a medical billing business owner in new york and in today's video i want to share with you how i got started in medical billing with no experience so in 2006 i was working as a practice manager for an ob gyn group in new york city i was liaison between the billing company we were outsourcing to in the practice so if they had any rejections any denials and they needed additional information or they received any medical record requests i was the point person that was pretty much the extent of my experience with medical billing so what happened was i was noticing a lot of denials for untimely filing so untimely filing is when you're submitting your claims outside of the allowed time frame that the insurance payer allows on average the insurance company allows at least 90 days for you to submit a claim so i knew if the billing company was not submitting these claims within the within this time period there was an issue so medical billing wasn't on my radar at all um i had no desire or interest in it but i did take advantage of this opportunity and i said to the doctors to allow me to take over the medical billing for three months i'll do it at no charge and if i do a good job uh to allow me to let go of the billing company bring the billing back in-house and form an in-house billing department they said yes surprisingly and uh you know i'm sure it's because they trusted me um but they said yes and i had to go through some trial and error of course i did make mistakes but the great thing about medical billing is you can correct your claims so if you submit a claim and it processes incorrectly you can send a corrected claim even if you submit it all together in error if it was not supposed to be submitted you can have the claim voided you just have to allow it to process and then make the necessary changes but um i purchased a textbook i paid for medical billing software training which is very important you want to learn the ins and outs of your software to make your job easier and that was pretty much it i didn't have a mentor i didn't have a coach i didn't have any friends or relatives in the industry no one else in the office had any billing experience so i pretty much i was a self-taught biller i had to figure it out on my own but i did and you can too um now would i recommend this to you today to go through that process no i wouldn't suggest winging in and figuring out on your own what i would suggest today is getting formal education getting formal training and even getting certified so the aapc or the american academy of professional coders does offer a medical billing credential it's called the cpb the certified professional biller so those are the steps that i would recommend you take with little to no experience to prepare you for employment um you want to get your experience and then possibly start your own medical billing business so what i'm doing presently is i offer medical billing education and hands-on training i do have an online course that is approved again by the aapc the online course prepares you to sit for the cpb exam and i do offer live a six week live training on uh medical billing instruction and software and i provide a blueprint on how you can start your own home based medical billing business so if you found this information to be helpful please give this video a like share it with someone you know who would be interested and feel free to leave video suggestions in the comments below stay tuned for weekly videos about all things medical billing and also follow me on instagram where i do post daily at ask the biller
