Thank you for joining me. since   2011 i've provided astronaut cosmonaut and  aviation autograph authentication services   to dealers collectors and auction houses worldwide  please be sure to hit the like button subscribe to   my channel here on collector's chat i like to  talk about things like autographs comic books   you know whatever strikes my fancy and  i'd love to have you along for the ride   ebay simultaneously the biggest blessing and  the biggest curse to ever happen to any hobby   and all collectors before ebay emerged in the mid  90s basically if you wanted to buy you had to go   through a magazine ad or a local collector  show if you were real lucky maybe you knew   some local collectors you could trade with  and you know the same thing with selling   you were essentially at the mercy of a  dealer who would offer you wholesale prices   ebay comes out and disrupts the entire system  so now you suddenly have access to hundreds   of thousands of sellers and if you want  to sell yourself it's really easy to do   the middleman has been taken out of the  equation that's the blessing now the curse is   the people who sell fakes the low-life  scammers it's really lowered the barriers   to entry for them as well in the old days  if you wanted to sell fakes you basically   had to do it almost to somebody's face  it was very difficult to remain anonymous   so you'd have to pedal your fakes at a  show or you'd have to do do it through an   ad where some your people could track you down  because they have your name and your address   uh you know now with the internet  it's really easy to remain anonymous   so if you want to sell fakes there's a really low  barrier to entry extremely low risk of prosecution   and quite honestly a really really low  risk of somebody punching your teeth in   once they found out that you've sold them fakes  so uh this is the blessing and this is the curse   so what are we gonna do about it how do you  buy on ebay wisely and minimize your risk   the first thing to understand is there's no magic  bullet and there's no guarantees i'm going to   provide you with some tips and advice to help you  think through potential ebay purchases it's going   to help you avoid obvious fakes and it's going  to help you avoid obvious crooked shady sellers   but just because something passes all the  tips doesn't guarantee that it's authentic   the idea here is to help you think critically   do some of your own analysis and  minimize the risk so let's go tip number one is the easiest but it's also  the hardest to do and that's know the autograph   that you're seeking to buy study the person's  habits study the person's autograph make sure   you're using only verified authentic exemplars  uh just googling...
