welcome in this tutorial what we're going to do is cover how to merge datasets in state up the first thing that we'll do however is prepare data in Microsoft Excel I find it much easier to manipulate and get data nice and clean too in Excel before I bring them into into Stata and so what we have here are three small data sets that have data for States we see on this Microsoft Excel file that I've got already opened up the first tab is for state 1 we'll call it state 1 data we notice it has about 14 states with the state abbreviation postal abbreviation code as well as the number of highway traffic fatalities in vehicle miles traveled we also see state 2 as now state name that is actually listed with population total and population underscore path which I'll mention later on what that is and also poverty number of people living below the poverty level in that state and by the way all these data for the year 2006 and let's assume that we have data in the third file for again in this case 15 states this is a number of violent crimes and the education 12 education 16 in education 18 or the percent of the population in the state that have that many years of education and lastly the unemployment rate in percent now as we scroll across and go back through those data again not only do we have different variables in each data set obviously but what we also have you'll notice is that the the name of the state is presented as different variables here at state we've done under state 3 data set it was named and under state 1 data set at state a B or for abbreviation what you also will notice if you quickly look at the cases in each one they are not identical so some cases are in all three data sets maybe one or so is only in one data sets and others may be in two but not a third data set and that poses a bit of a challenge for us getting our data ready to to merge and state out now if we happen to have all of the data the same cases with the exact same you know identify our variable in that first column it's let's say state name was written out exactly the same in all data sets it may be pretty easy just to combine these data sets in Excel by copying and pasting them from one sheet to the next to an X so that they're all combined together but it's more of a challenge here when we see here that the data have different cases in each one of these to do this in Excel and really what we should do to avoid any mistakes in terms of adding together and merging different small files or even large files as we...
