hi this is Kelly Brown and today we're going to do a mail we're going to talk about mail merging certificates and that is loads of fun and when you are doing a mail merge you're bringing in a Microsoft Word document with a Microsoft Excel document the Excel document has the data that you want to merge into the word document so it's really important that your Microsoft Excel document be ready to go before you start the mail merge I have a excel document in front of you and you'll see that it has a last name first name column school column grade column gender address city state zip and teacher well we don't need all those columns for our certificate but we have them here and we're going to go but the one column that I would like here is a column that had the first and last name together we see here that the last name column is not an alphabetical order so if there was some sorting or filtering that I would want to do for my certificates I'd want to do that ahead of time so to sort by last name I'm going to click in any cell in the last name column any one cell in the last name column then from the Home tab I'm going to go all the way to the right of the ribbon and I see a button that says AZ sort and filter I'm going to click on that button and the very first choice says sort A to Z so I'm going to click sort A to Z and now you'll see that my last name column is sorted a to Z so I have the sort that I want the other thing that I want is I want a column that has the first and last name together not separate into columns so I'm going to insert a new column here I clicked on the letter C to select column C I right clicked over the C then I clicked on insert and now I have a new column I'm going to name this new column full name okay and I'm going to use a new tool that is um really fresh with Excel 2013 it's only it only started in Excel 2013 and it's a tool called flash fill what it will do is will put data from two different columns together in one so I want to put Thomas abran in one column here so I'm going to click in that cell and start typing on my keyboard Thomas just as it appears in the cell then after Thomas I'm going to hit a space and then I'm going to type in apron EB ro n just as it appears in this cell and then I'm going to hit the enter key so I put the two pieces of data from this cell in one cell here all right so I I did...
