hey there it's john with excel campus and in this video we're going to look at three different ways to combine text from multiple cells in excel so this is a great question from professor y.c and mohammed on our youtube channel and here we have an example where we have these two columns of names here first and last name and we want to combine those into a full name column so we're going to look at an example that does this we'll also look at an example that does this here where we have last name comma first name and then we'll take a look at an example where we combine three names where in some cases we have a middle name and we're going to look at one way to do this with formulas another way to do it with formulas and then a third way to do it with power query so let's go ahead and jump in and get started we'll go over to this two names sheet here i'll make this file available for free download and i'll put a link to that in the description below so here we have our column of first and last names and we're going to write a formula to combine these and it's a very simple formula so i'm just going to start here in cell c2 i'm going to type equals then i'm going to reference cell a2 right here and to combine text or combine cells text from cells in excel we can use the ampersand symbol so on most keyboards that's going to be shift 7 to type in the ampersand symbol here and then i can just select this cell here and that's going to combine the text from both both cells so i'll hit enter and show the results now of course as you'll see here we don't have a space between the names and we want to add that space between the names so in order to do that we're going to edit this cell again i'll hit f2 on the keyboard and here after our ampersand we're going to add a space and we do that by wrapping it in quotation marks so i'm first going to type quotation marks i'm going to type space then quotation marks again and now i'm going to type another ampersand so that's going to join the first name in a2 and then join it with the space here between the two quotation marks and then b2 go ahead and hit enter since i'm using an excel table here that will fill down the formula and now you can see that we have a space between the first and last names we can also use that technique for the last name comma first name solution and we'll just go ahead and do that right here so i'll type equals i'm going to select b2 now i'm going to type in ampersand open the quotation...
